The Blue Heron's eyesight is about three times more detailed than ours, and its binocular vision gives it superb depth perception. It also has a built in “zoom lens” – allowing the bird to switch instantaneously between telescopic and macro vision.

—Behind the iron bars, the prisoner watched as the world narrowed into thin strips of orange light... the sun was setting, slow and tender. Reality settled upon his chest: the world was immense, and he was not free within it. —

Sometimes, we do not need iron bars to feel like prisoners in our world. (It is not about me, but about many people in the world.)

Macro Mondays: "Lines"

My photo for the theme; I used a blue comb placed over one of my photos on my iPad (below). HMM!

Closeup vision in one eye makes for easier macro vision. (Less so seeing wee birds.)

For Macro Mondays: "Member's Choice: Abstract Macro.

Deliberately vague, as requested.

Thanks for looking!

No particular point of focus here, just getting inside a flower and getting some effects

Calm waters, carefree days - can you imagine a more relaxed pose for a frog in a pond? 😄

Dans la forêt de Guyane.

A striking macro close-up of a green praying mantis (Mantodea) resting on a stem, beautifully adorned with crystal-clear water droplets. This detailed shot highlights the complex structure of its compound eyes and the sharp, spined raptorial forelegs it uses for hunting. A fascinating glimpse into the micro world of nature.

Free to a good home: a Micro Shar-Pei puppy! :))

Friendly, sociable, and affectionate.

Playful, yet quiet.

A true neat freak — absolutely loves bathing.

Accustomed to a plant-based diet.

Breed advantages include a fur-free shedding and an exceptionally miniature size.

P.S

For the serious-minded:

A juvenile Water Springtail (Podura aquatica Linnæus, 1758), approximately 0.9 mm in size.

Photographed in situ, on the duckweed-covered surface of a pond.

Macro Mondays 'imperfect' theme. My second photoshoot for this theme after I realised that my vintage book didn't quite meet the brief.

This old barometer looks quite nice until you view it with 'macro vision'. Then, the dust, dirt, grease, scratches and pit marks become apparent.

This part measures approx 3.75 cm x 3 cm

An encounter with even a single little pseudoscorpion is always a cherished and meaningful event for me. But this time—oh!—I was lucky enough to witness their courtship ritual: an elaborate mating dance, whose prelude is captured in this image—a scene still quite rare across the vast expanses of the internet.

It happened while I was "tracking" one of these tiny creatures (≈ 2.2 mm) across the surface of a moldering stump. Suddenly, our little hero stopped in front of a small, secluded nook, extended his "hands" toward it—and at once, similar ones reached out to meet him.

It is worth noting that our characters are completely blind, and their pedipalps—equipped with sensory hairs called trichobothria—serve as their organs of touch.

After exchanging gentle handshakes, the tiny pair spent about a minute making their way onto an open, level surface. Then, for nearly four minutes, they waltzed together, hand in hand, drawing their "elbows" together and apart. There was no trace of aggression or fear in their movements. Rather, it resembled a… dreamily romantic encounter. :)

I was also reminded of the dance of the blind Colonel Frank Slade (Al Pacino) in Scent of a Woman. :)

P.S.

Attempts to determine the species led me to Chernes cimicoides and the closely related Dinocheirus panzeri. According to available information, one of the distinguishing features between these species is the presence of a trichobothrium on the fourth leg. Since in this case (based on my other photographs) only one of the partners possessed it, I will settle on the more general identification: Chernetidae.

There's not a great deal to photograph in our garden at the moment (we've got a big trip to the garden centre planned once lockdown ends), but on closer inspection these little guys were hard at work.

The Old World flycatchers are a large family, the Muscicapidae, of small passerine birds mostly restricted to the Old World (Europe, Africa and Asia). These are mainly small arboreal insectivores, many of which, as the name implies, take their prey on the wing. The family includes 324 species and is divided into 51 genera.

Sometimes photos don't quite turn out how we plan...like this one.🙈 I was intending to take a crisp macro shot of these water droplets, but instead I ended up with this dreamy abstract looking image. Which I love, by the way, much more than the image I thought I was taking 💜

What photos have you taken that you've loved more than the planned shot?

Although there are exotic springtails whose antennae surpass those of my little model, I still couldn't resist this title. After all, she displays her natural regalia — spanning almost the entire width of the frame — with such graceful dignity!

And the camera angle itself seems to have elevated this millimeter-sized 📏 little one onto a pedestal. :)

📚 A note for the dedicated enthusiasts.

In various sources, I have come across the statement that the melanistic Dicyrtoma fusca var. 2 is recorded significantly less frequently than other "traditional" forms of this species. However, drawing on my own experience of regular observations in the forests of the Sumy region (northern Ukraine), I would note that var. 2 is quite common here.

My archive contains numerous photographs documenting different developmental stages of this variation.

The average length of adults is approximately 1.6 mm. But upon reaching their maximum size (around 2.4 mm), they are fully capable of rivaling the impressive dimensions of large Allacma fusca springtails.

Considering that the length of the tiny creature depicted here is about 1.1 mm 📏, and evaluating its body proportions and pigmentation, I would suggest that we are looking at a subadult individual.
