On the street of Boston

I was asked again recently about how to post links in comments, and rather than send the reply by flickr mail, I thought I'd post it here.

For all of you who know all about this stuff, look away now.

For all of you who feel that html is some secret society knowledge passed on only to initiates after a lengthy ritual involving funny handshakes and a handsome contribution to the coffers, read on.

---------

There are times when posting to a discussion thread or commenting on someone's photo you may want to insert a hyperlink. It may be a link to an external website that answers someone's question. It may be a link to another image, or to someone else's comment. Or you may want to slap in an image.

Here's how.

Linking to another web page

Example would be to link to Moko's page

The basic html tag for a link is

<a href="X">Y</a>

where X is the URL you want to link to and Y is the text that you want to serve as the link.

So, to create this link to Moko's photostream, I went onto her page and copied the URL http: //www.flickr.com/photos/moko/

Then I pasted this where the X is in the example above. I then replaced the Y with the words Moko's page.

Easy peasy.

Linking to a specific photo

The same principle applies to linking to photos. If I want to link to dulcelife's insanely macro vision of a fly, I go to the image, copy the URL

http: //www.flickr.com/photos/dulcelife/28328277/ and paste that where the X is.

Linking to specific comments

Sometime you may want to refer to a specific comment in a discussion thread. For example, you may want to refer to someone's comment in the Technique group about using a Lensbaby. But you want to link straight to that comment to save people scrolling down the page to find it.

Go to the comment you want to link to. Underneath you will see the word permalink in brackets. Click on it, and then copy the URL from the address bar as usual, and create the hyperlink as above. (In html terms, this is creating a named anchor.)

Inserting images

Here's where things get fun.

In discussion threads and comments you can insert images.

It doesn't have to be your photo, by the way.

If you are on a photo's page, click the All Sizes button above the image. Click on one of the smaller sizes - Small or Thumbnail is a good idea. Below the image you will see two options - copy the contents of the first box, and paste the contents straight into where you are making the comment. If you don't see these two options it is because this person has blocked this facility, and you will have to make do with posting a link.

I have graduated to full macro by picking up a Sigma 105mm Macro lens today. It wasn't as bright out today so I had to stop down the shutter speed, so the image stabilization was quite helpful. Am still working on taking pictures so close and am not quite their with working with such a shallow depth of field. But I love the quality the lens is able to put out, and how close I am able to get to my subject. Give me suggestions in the comments on how I can improve my macro shooting.

I've always been aware of the fact that insects can assume rather peculiar appearances, but this one take the cake. That is, until I come across something even more unusual.

The insect in question is a weird-looking brown creepy-crawly, belonging to the Membracidae family, commonly known as the treehopper. What sets it apart is the way is pronotum, which is the protective plate at the front of their thorax, extends upward and over their body. In certain species, the pronotum takes on the appearance of a thorn, earning them the nickname "thorn bugs." However, in other species, it assumes even more eccentric shapes.

Treehoppers can be spotted on various tree species, with a preference for young trees and perennial weeds. They are relatively small, measuring under 10mm in body length, and both adults and nymphs can often be found in groups on the stems and new growth of their host plants. These peculiar insects possess mouthparts equipped with two sharp tubes—one for injecting saliva to prevent the tree's defenses from sealing up the puncture and the other for sucking.

What truly makes them unique is their natural instinct to jump when disturbed, which explains their common name: treehoppers.

I have several lateral shots, but loved this full frontal of its questioning gaze.

Exxquisite moment of #pupa emerging into a beautiful #TigerButterfly.

My #NikonD3000 was good enough to capture this entrancing instant without expensive lens and flash.

Starting a series of shots as India celebrates #WildLifeWeek from 02Oct2019 to 08Oct2019.

After projects I keep the left overs and give them new life by smashing and cutting them till the color bleeds all over my light table.
