Please spill your macro secrets!

I have gotten some wonderful advice from a few Flickr friends on macro tips but I am still struggling. My camera is a Nikon D-3100 and the only lenses I have are an 18-55mm and a 70-300mm. I also have an old tripod. Ideally I know a macro lens would be best but not in my budget right now. I want to know what is in your bag of tricks to achieve those amazing shots I’ve seen! Also, to crop or not to crop?

And if anyone has advice on the best butterfly attracting flowers, I’d love to know. I greatly appreciate any tips to help improve on my nemesis, “the macro shot”. LOL

Eupholus is a genus of beetle in the family Curculionidae. The genus includes some of the most colourful of the weevils. The colour may serve as a warning to predators that they are distasteful. Most species feed upon yam leaves, some of which are toxic to other animals. The species occur in New Guinea and adjacent islands. This genus was described by French entomologist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Dechauffour de Boisduval in 1835.

I don't know what kind of spider this is, but it is definitely one of the biggest spiders I've seen in this part of america. If you figure those flowers are well over an inch in diameter, this spider is pretty large.

- LA PLUMITA QUE SE LE CAYO AL " LOLO " cuando lo rescate...la guarde de recuerdo...LE CURE LA HERIDA DE LA GARRA DEL GAVILAN y por MILAGRO no toco signos vitales hoy sera la cuarta noche que duerma solito en la RECS.!! extrañara el huevo duro,la manzana,la naranja,la lechuga,el pan negro con semillas, la polenta y el girasol...yo lo extraño estos cuatro dias como nunca lo imagine ,fueron dos mese deconvivencia pero...TIENE SUS ALAS PARA VOLAR DONDE QUIERA Y UNA SEGUNDA OPORTUNIDAD DE VIDA.! dos meses tardo en crecer su cola completa de timon. ( lo suficiente para adorarlo ) ...sin ella nunca podria tomar ALTURA.! al llevar la caja a la RECS PARA DEVOLVERLE LA LIBERTAD ., no queria salir de la caja que estaba abierta...tenia miedo...., volque la caja y volo a un arbol...de ahi a otro mas alto.!!! eligio una ramita de percha y desde ahi me miraba....acicalandose ....pase 4 horas despues antes de cerrar la RECS...y seguia en el mismo lugar Ufffff ...con su sonido llamando a alguien de su especie .....LOLO TE DESEO TODA LA SUERTE DEL MUNDO.!

HISTORIA ( 1 ) EL INICIO

- Tomando un cafe con leche y medialunas en una confiteria cercana a casa....veo delante a unos 35 metros en la baranda de un 2ª piso UN GAVILAN MIXTO.!!!!! mirando dentro del balcon de un edificio ....dije ni celular traje para documentar ( aparte odio los celulares jajaja ) urgente hice seña a la moza a travez del vidrio que ya venia....( todavia no habia pagado ;) cuando me acerco al lugar frente al balcon se veia ENORME!! le digo a un gordito 25 YEARS OLD :) sentado con su celular ...VISTE ESE GAVILAN AHI.!!! que cosa dice..¿¿??..jajajaja huy que AGUILA ENORME !!!!! inquieto el gavilan se paseba por el borde mirando adentro....y zazzz se MANDO DE UNA ADENTRO.! se produce un revoloteo infernal dentro del balcon y sale un pajarito todo desplumado ( todavia no me habia percatado de que ave era) el gavilan lo sigue a la altura de mis ojos por arriba de los techos de los autos....UFFFF....el lorito choca contra la pared arriba de un marco de una puerta y JUSTO YO CRUZO CORRIENDO ENTRE AUTOS ENFRENTE DETENIDOS POR EL SEMAFORO ....en el momento en que el gavilan tambien choca con la pared....el lorito lastimado cae al angulo del piso de la puerta...queda el lorito a mi derecha ...yo en el medio y a la izquierda y sin miedo se MANDA EL GAVILAN MIXTO PARA ATRAPARLO...no acerte la patada de casualidad jajajajaja de lo contrario ese gavilan no contaba mas el cuento..., el gavilan se subio volando al cable telefonico y miraba como corria peligro SU MERIENDA....y aparte me estaria puteando....jajajaja de ahi el lorito visualmente latimado cae en el medio de la calle quiero agarrar el lorito y se va abajo de los autos estacionados...golpeo el vidrio del conductor Y LE GRITO NO ARRANQUES QUE ABAJO HAY UN ANIMAL ....me tiro abajo ..( ya habia dos animales yo incluido jajajaja ) el lorito se vuela arrastrando lastimado y con sangre en el plumaje hasta el auto de al lado ...otra vez golpear el vidrio y avisar...cuando casi lo agarro pssss hace un vuelo rasante al piso y choca con el cordon de la vereda y justo al lado de los caños de desague del edificio...por milesimas pense si se mete ahi sone! ahi si lo pude agarrar CON LAS DOS MANOS.!juro que nadie tiene idea de lo fuerte que muerde un loro asustado...jajaja me hizo un agujero en el pulgar y sangraba mi dedo ...pero no lo solte ....le aplique Una llave doble nelson recordando al luchador de cach MARTIN KARADAJIAN ..JA .con los pulgares le baje la cabeza y con el resto de las manos le cubri la cabeza CON SUS PROPIAS ALAS...asi me fui caminando y rezando COMO SI FUERA UNA BIBLIA VERDE entre mis manos a la confiteria., donde pedi si tenian dos bolsas de papel para guardar UN LORO LASTIMADO....Ufffff...LA ODISEA vendria despues donde pongo al loro y que hago con mi gato en casa.!!! Continuara..
