Er gehört zur Familie der Dickkopffalter.

Sehr auffällig ist das Flugverhalten der Falter, die mit wenigen Flügelschlägen langsam in Wellenlinien fliegen und dabei die spiegelnden Hinterflügelunterseiten deutlich zeigen. Das Flugbild wirkt hüpfend, weshalb die Art gelegentlich auch als „Hüppeling“ bezeichnet wird.
