The Egitarso peninsula is the place of the village of San Vito Lo Capo, legendary for its Sanctuary-Fortress, surrounded by Monte Monaco, Cozzo Mondello, Pizzo Castelluzzo and Monte Cofano. The Sanctuary-Fortress dates back to 299 A.C. the legend tells of the young Vito martyred by the local populations and the Conturrana landslide, sent as divine punishment and witnessed by the nurse who later became Santa Crescienza. The Sanctuary suffered many attacks by Turkish pirates and corsairs, including Dragut, increasing the notoriety of the holy place.
San Vito Lo Capo that is a picturesque coastal town in northwestern Sicily, renowned for its white sandy beach, turquoise waters, and relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. Nestled between rugged mountains and the sea, it offers a stunning natural setting and a charming town center filled with cafés and local traditions. Nearby, the Bay of Macari enchants with its unspoiled coastline, crystal-clear coves, and breathtaking sunsets, making this area one of Sicily’s most beautiful seaside destinations.

We choosed this place almost by chance, mainly aiming at avoiding the crowd of the not far beach of San Vito Lo Capo, the most looked for in Italy, according to Tripadvisor.
The beauty of this coast has been a true surprise to me (but also the rest of Sicily has, btw, being the first time here for me) and only after my arrive I uncovered this place ranked first among the most beautiful coasts in Italy in 2015, according to the ranking draught annually by Legambiente.
High on the cliffs you can spot the shape of a sighting tower built in the XVIth century. It was part of a vast net of similar towers, scattered across all the sicilian coasts ( but they were very frequent all over the european coasts of the Mediterranean Sea).
From each tower it was possible to see and to communicate with (signals, fire, smoke) the nearby ones on both sides. They were intended as a surveillance extensive means to prevent incursions by Saracens and Corsars.
