Quest'antica torre era parte del sistema difensivo contro i corsari ideato dall’architetto fiorentino Camillo Camilliani. Nel XVI secolo infatti le coste del Regno di Sicilia vennero dotate di torri di avvistamento per la difesa contro gli attacchi dal mare. La torre presenta la tipica pianta quadrata camillanea; alla base si ubicano un terrapieno per la cisterna e il deposito delle munizioni. Ai torrari, militari di guardia alle torri, era destinato un vano al primo piano diviso in due ambienti. Infine, questa tipologia di torri presentava una terrazza finalizzata sia alla difesa delle coste, in cui posizionare i pezzi di artiglieria, sia alla comunicazione di allerta tramite segnali (fani) con fumi e fuoco.
A capelinha e construções acessórias ficam bem lá no cimo da montanha, sobranceira à Aldeia da Pena.
Sobre as origens, vida e obra de São Macário, contam-se muitas lendas e estórias, dum pitoresco digno de romance de cordel. Quem quiser, pode deliciar-se, consultando a internet. Eu adorei aquela de o santo levar brasas na mão e não se queimar, a não ser quando olhou para as pernas duma rapariga. Mas tudo só inocência de santo.... Ora bem!

We choosed this place almost by chance, mainly aiming at avoiding the crowd of the not far beach of San Vito Lo Capo, the most looked for in Italy, according to Tripadvisor.
The beauty of this coast has been a true surprise to me (but also the rest of Sicily has, btw, being the first time here for me) and only after my arrive I uncovered this place ranked first among the most beautiful coasts in Italy in 2015, according to the ranking draught annually by Legambiente.
High on the cliffs you can spot the shape of a sighting tower built in the XVIth century. It was part of a vast net of similar towers, scattered across all the sicilian coasts ( but they were very frequent all over the european coasts of the Mediterranean Sea).
From each tower it was possible to see and to communicate with (signals, fire, smoke) the nearby ones on both sides. They were intended as a surveillance extensive means to prevent incursions by Saracens and Corsars.
