Between 1978 and 1981 BMW produced only 453 examples of the Giorgetto Giugiaro designed M1. Powered by the sublime M88/1 straight-six engine, the road cars were only produced to homologate the M1 for racing, most notably in BMW's own 'Pro-car' series. Road cars produced an impressive 273 bhp from the 3.5 litre engine, but twin-turbocharged racers gave up to 850 bhp.

If you think it looks quite similar to my Maserati Bora then it's no coincidence as Giugiaro penned both cars.

Here's my take on a retro-mod 'body in white' racer - probably sacrilege if done to a real car, but this is LEGO!

The M1 was originally built by Lamborghini in an agreement with BMW to develop a racing car that could also be marketed to the public. and became the only mid-engined mass produced BMW. The body was styled by Giugiaro in Italy. The engine a twin-cam M88/1 3.5 ltr. 6 cylinder with Kugelfischler fuel injection was used in a South African version of the 1984-85 BMW 745 (209 units), the E24 M6 and M635CSi and the E28 M5.. The street version of the M1 gave 273 bhp and a top end of 160 mph while the Turbo racers got 850 bhp, Total production of 456. In racing the M1 won the Group championship in 1984 and the Procar BMW M1 series supported Formula One 1979 + 1980 driven by the current grand prix drivers. Champions 79 Nicki Lauda, 80 Nelson Piquet.

Here is an image from the beginning of lockdown. This is Messier 88, a galaxy very similar in size to our own Milky Way, 57 million light-years away and a member of the Virgo cluster. M 88 was discovered by Charles Messier on 18th March 1781, the same night he discovered several other members of the Virgo cluster.

There are numerous faint galaxies in this image including the mag 13, NGC 4516 in the top left corner.

Data was captured on the night of 31 March 2020 and comprised 25 x five-minutes luminance and 10 x five-minutes each of RGB binned 2 x 2.

Markarian Mosaic – The Bigger Picture: It’s no figure of speech, it’s just a big picture This is a 4 panel mosaic with about 6 hours of integration per panel, 25 hours in total. Check out the high resolution version to fully appreciate this area in the sky that is scattered with hundreds of galaxies.

Markarian’s chain was named after an Armenian astronomer in the 1970s and represents a beautiful stretch of galaxies that forms part of the Virgo Cluster. Our own Local Group of galaxies (Milky Way, large and small Magellenic Clouds, M31, M32, M100, M33) is currently receding from the Virgo Cluster at a rate of about 1000 km/second. However, it is anticipated that our Local Group will eventually stop receding from the Virgo Cluster and will ultimately accelerate towards this region (gravity from the Virgo Cluster influences us even at distances of 70 million light years). M84 and M86 are the 2 large elliptical galaxies on the right (from right to left). M88 is the prominent spiral galaxy on the upper left. The most dominant galaxy in this region is M87, at the lower left of the frame. Messier 87 is a supergiant elliptical galaxy and one of the most massive galaxies in the local universe. It is notable for its large population of globular clusters—about 12,000 compared to the 150–200 orbiting the Milky Way—and its jet of energetic plasma that originates at the core and extends at least 4,900 light-years, traveling at relativistic speed. It is one of the brightest radio sources in the sky, and a popular target for both amateur and professional astronomers.

This is attractive spiral galaxy M88, a relatively close companion of the better known M87 (Virgo A) with its extraordinary jet. M88 may not have a super massive black hole and jet, but it does have some nice dust lanes.

This is a stack of 14 x 3-minute exposures, with the William Optics RedCat 51mm astrograph at f/5, and with the Canon EOS Ra at ISO 1250, on the Astro-Physics Mach1 mount, tracking but not guided. The field is 8° x 5°. Taken May 13, 2020 from home on a very clear moonless night. Despite the scope being out for a while before I started shooting, its focus shifted slightly during the hour of exposures as the night cooled, making the last exposures a little soft. All stacked and median combined in Photoshop CC as there were satellite trails in many frames.

Markarian's Chain of Galaxies begins near the center-right in this image with "The Face" consisting of M84, M86, and NGC 4388, with NGC 4387 as its nose. It continues left and upward with NGC 4438, NGC 4473, NGC 4477, and finishes at the top left with M88. M87 is the bright outlier near the bottom left, where astronomers recently captured the first black hole image. Countless other smaller galaxies share the frame.

New image version!

Markarian's Chain of galaxies is a part of larger, closest to us Virgo cluster of galaxies, located in its central part. It is called "chain" because, when viewed from Earth, the galaxies lie along a smoothly curved line. It was named after the Armenian astrophysicist, B. E. Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the early 1960s. The prominent feature of this field is so called the Eyes Galaxies (NGC 4435-NGC 4438) - a pair of galaxies about 52 million light-years away from Sol.

Also seen are M88 (upper left), M90 (low left), M87 (low center) which hosts the famous black hole first ever imaged by the EHT. M86 and M84 are large elliptical galaxies at upper right.
