Relatively clear skies just over a week ago meant I could image the sweeping arc of Markarian's chain of galaxies.

This string of galaxies form part of the Virgo cluster. The galaxies range in distance 40-70 million light-years from us.

It is believed that around seven of the galaxies do indeed appear to move in concert. Others are simply the result of a line of sight effect.

The two brightest galaxies were catalogued by Messier as M84 and M86, most of the rest are catalogued by their NGC number. The bright spiral galaxy at top left is M88 lying at a distance of 50-60 million light-years in the constellation of Come Berenices.

Imaged with my Askar 71mm refractor and a ZWO 2600MC camera.

2.8hrs of exposure calibrated with temp. matched darks, flats and dark flats.

Thanks for looking!

Well if you like galaxies in all shapes as sizes this will be something for you.

Following on from my recent Markarian's chain here is an extended look into the wider Virgo cluster.

A range of lesser seen galaxies including M89 with its delicate shells, M90, M88 and M91.

In fact, there are some many galaxies in this image it makes the brain hurt - I will put an annotated version up for you to see :)

Hope you enjoy, this area of the sky for some reason seems very difficult to process (well for me anyway) but it is a really nice area to look at purely out of interest.

Messier 88 (M88 or NGC 4501) is about 47 million light years away in the direction of the constellation Coma Berenices and belongs to the Virgo Cluster. I simply love how this galaxy poses for photographs, it’s hard to pick a bad angle with its symmetrical arms and well defined spiral. In this image, I used 60 x 60 second exposures shooting at f/10 on my Meade 12” LX-90 telescope using the ZWO ASI071mc-Pro cooled to 5C.

Markarian's Chain is a stretch of galaxies that forms part of the Virgo Cluster. When viewed from Earth, the galaxies lie along a smoothly curved line. Charles Messier first discovered two of the galaxies, M84 and M86, in 1781. The other galaxies seen in the chain were discovered by William Herschel and are now known primarily by their catalog numbers in Dreyer's New General Catalogue, published in 1888. The chain of galaxies was ultimately named after the Soviet astrophysicist, Benjamin Markarian, who discovered their common motion in the early 1960s. (Wiki)

Also included in this image (far left) is the spiral galaxy M88, located in the constellation Coma Berenices.

This is a wide-field framing of the heart of the Coma-Virgo cluster of galaxies in the northern spring sky, with galaxies galore in the frame, including a dozen Messier objects.

The field is 7.5° by 5°, so similar to binoculars. The faintest galaxies here are about 12th magnitude.

Just below the centre is the Marakarian's Chain of galaxies including the Messier galaxies M84 and M86. The giant elliptical M87 (famous for having its central black hole imaged) is below and to the left of the Chain. There are many other Messier objects in the field — At top right around the blue star 6 Comae is the trio of M98 (at the far edge), M99 (below and right of 6 Comae) and M100 (at top). At left are M88, M91, M90 amd M89. At bottom left is M58 and M59. M60 just squeaks onto the frame.

This is a stack of 10 x 6 minute exposures with the SharpStar 61 EDPH II refractor at f/4.5 and the Canon EOS Ra at ISO 100. This is a single framing, not a mosaic. Taken from home April 24, 2022. Haze moving in spoiled exposures taken after this set. Dithered with MGEN3 autoguider; no darks applied.

This is a LRGB image of M88/NGC4501 Galaxy. Again this is a small object and requires a longer focal length than the F7 of my scope but saying that I’m pleasantly surprised at the amount of detail I manage to pick out. This was going to be taken using my new 0.8 TeleVue focal reducer and include Galaxy M91 but I’m currently waiting for an adjustable spacer.

Information:-

In vrijwel elke trein kom je zo'n bergingsvoertuig tegen. De reden hiervan is dat als er iets met het laden of lossen van de trein fout gaat, deze de boel weer kan herstellen.

Between 1978 and 1981 BMW produced only 453 examples of the Giorgetto Giugiaro designed M1. Powered by the sublime M88/1 straight-six engine, the road cars were only produced to homologate the M1 for racing, most notably in BMW's own 'Pro-car' series. Road cars produced an impressive 273 bhp from the 3.5 litre engine, but twin-turbocharged racers gave up to 850 bhp.

If you think it looks quite similar to my Maserati Bora then it's no coincidence as Giugiaro penned both cars.

Here's my take on a retro-mod 'body in white' racer - probably sacrilege if done to a real car, but this is LEGO!

This is a stack of 5 x 8-minute exposures through the SharpStar 76mm EDPH refractor and with the SharpStar flattener/reducer for f/4.5, and with the Canon EOS Ra at ISO 800. An additional exposure taken through light cloud layered in added the star glows. Clouds prevented more exposures.

Here is an image from the beginning of lockdown. This is Messier 88, a galaxy very similar in size to our own Milky Way, 57 million light-years away and a member of the Virgo cluster. M 88 was discovered by Charles Messier on 18th March 1781, the same night he discovered several other members of the Virgo cluster.

There are numerous faint galaxies in this image including the mag 13, NGC 4516 in the top left corner.

Data was captured on the night of 31 March 2020 and comprised 25 x five-minutes luminance and 10 x five-minutes each of RGB binned 2 x 2.
