Two of my dear friends took mortal form this week for 6 hours, they met in the enchanted forest. Luna the darkness of night and starry sky and Ray the light of the blue sky and clouds. I thought Ray would be so fitting for the Sunshine Sunday.

I was hiking the other day in Red River Gorge and I consumed part of my luck for the rest of the year because I saw a Luna Moth. They are not considered endangered as yet, however they are rare in some areas.
The adult lives only a week, which further reduces the chance of meeting one.
It was healthy and happy flying from tree to tree, I slowly approached it and, surprisingly, it paused giving me the chance to take a few shots. The few moments made me forget that I was drained, close to the end of a hike which mostly felt like swimming uphill in 100 degF water.

Luna Moth (Actias luna):
-Nearctic moth in the family Saturniidae, also known as giant silk moths
-Typical Wingspan 114 mm (4.5 in), can exceed 178 mm (7 in), one of the largest in North America
-One generation per year in Canada, two-three generation per year further south in US
-Elongated tail role is to scramble the echolocation detection used by bats, kind of like flares for military aircrafts :)
-Due to its beauty, the luna moth is not considered a pest, in fact, the use of pesticides, loss of habitat, and pollution are some of the reasons it is endangered. (the Spruce)

Luna had always dreamed of going to the moon. Her parents and friends told her it was impossible, but she was determined.
She spent months studying physics and engineering until, with help from her local scrap metal merchant, she finally built her own spacecraft.
Luna blasted off into space, feeling a rush of excitement and fear as she left Earth behind. The journey was long and arduous, but the ship proved space-worthy.
Finally, she landed on the moon with a rather clumsy crash landing. Then, soon after she took her first tentative steps, she slipped and fell down a deep hole.
To her great surprise, she found herself in a massive, bustling city. It was like nothing she had ever seen before. Flying cars zipped through the streets, and people walked around with bionic limbs and glowing eyes.
She met a local girl called Cybelle, who showed her around the city. The locals had replaced many of their body parts with advanced cybernetic implants, allowing them to live without the need for an atmosphere. Knowing how troubled life on Earth could be, they had kept their advanced civilisation secret for centuries.
But when Luna returned to her ship it was clear it wouldn’t make the trip back home. Luckily, Cybelle had given her some special lung implants.
Her new life was just beginning.

Nachdem der Eigner der Luna Farkhad Akhmedov, im Februar 2022 nach dem russischen Überfall auf die Ukraine zu den von der Europäischen Union mit Sanktionen belegten russischen Oligarchen zählte, soll die Luna, die sich zu Reparatur- und Überarbeitungsarbeiten in der Hamburger Werft Blohm + Voss befand, von den Behörden Anfang März 2022 vorläufig festgesetzt worden sein.

Mientras buscaban acomodo en la laguna, aproveché para hacerles alguna foto cuando coincidían con la luna. Esto es lo mejor que pude sacar ;-)

I was determined to try my first real session of astrophotography using my new telescope last night, but a failure to correctly polar align, as well as incoming clouds put an end to that idea.
I did however manage to observe saturn which was amazing, and of course Luna.
This was taken prime using a Canon 1000D (baader modified) through my Skywatcher 200P-DS. I need to get a 2" barlow :)
P.S It makes a lovely iPad mini homescreen image :)
This was a sighting that gave me (and a fellow shooter) an amazing thrill the other day ... we came across a pair of Luna Moths in the act of mating.
