Wheeling Daily Intelligencer, July 7, 1896:

"A very destructive rain storm that at one time almost approached the volume of a cloud-burst, occurred in the vicinity yesterday morning, and caused immense loss to property and the loss of three lives... The rain fell heavily in the interior of Ohio and Marshall counties and over in Belmont county, Ohio, Sunday night, but it was not until about 2 o'clock yesterday morning that the rain came down so heavily that it was practically a cloud burst... Early in the morning it became known at the Baltimore & Ohio passenger station that train shed which is supported across the creek by a stone pier at the northern end, by another about the center and by a third at the southern end, was in danger of falling into the boiling flood."

The pier gave way at 11:30 that morning and the train shed fell. The weight of the wreckage caused the northern span of the bridge that crossed the creek just below the passenger station train sheds to collapse.

Monday 6th August 1979, and the start of a nice cushy week on my favourite duty, the "Thornbury locals". You worked your way out from Bristol on a trip mainly laid on for Marlwood School, Alveston, then spent the morning dapping about on a network of delightful little routes linking Thornbury to the surrounding villages. I think that day's itinerary was two trips from Thornbury to Tytherington and two to Berkeley via Hill. Thursday was the same. Tuesday was Thornbury-Sharpness, via Lower Stone, then Sharpness to Dursley. The latter service had a 4XX Stroud-area number. Back the same way. Wednesday was two trips down to Sheperdine and back. Friday took you over to Yate, via Tytherington and Iron Acton. There were various ten-minute flea-hops up to Tytherington and back thrown in here and there to profitably ...or, rather, loss-makingly... occupy the driver's time. You then worked back to Bristol on the 310, via Olveston, Tockington, Lower Almondsbury and Little Stoke. It was "union agreement" that, since the driver spent the whole duty away from his home depot and its canteen facilities, a certain amount of non-driving time must be incorporated into his day. This enabled you to pop into a branch of Witts's, buy a nice pasty and one or two other dainties and roar off to some secluded lay-by to spread out on the back seat with the Telegraph and a Henri Winterman half corona. It was money for jam.

I didn't do too bad for buses that week. The day after this I had to sway and float around the lanes, to the dispiriting groan of its transmission, in a bloody 10.3-metre Leyland National. Wednesday was a (not quite so bad) B-series National. Otherwise it was these agreeable short REs. Here, with my essentials ...duty card, waybill and newspaper... grouped around the dash, and nobody aboard, I'd stopped to jump out for a quick shot. Not much danger of causing an obstruction. The little hamlet of Hill is in the distance. With the Bristol-Gloucester limited stop service there were three bus routes between Thornbury and Berkeley. It seems incredible now and, of course, it was all gone within a year or two.

NASH POINT LIGHTHOUSE IS A GRADE 2 LISTED, HISTORIC BUILDING. IT IS A MAJOR PART OF OUR SOCIAL AND MARITIME HISTORY AND WAS THE LAST MANNED LIGHTHOUSE IN WALES, BEING DE-MANNED IN AUGUST 1998, JUST A MONTH, OR SO, BEFORE THE LAST MANNED LIGHTHOUSE IN THE U.K. (NORTH FORELAND IN KENT) WAS SWITCHED OVER TO AUTOMATIC OPERATION.

THE LIGHTHOUSE’S OPERATION IS MONITORED BY TRINITY HOUSE’S OPERATION & PLANNING CONTROL CENTRE AT HARWICH, ESSEX.

THE STATION WAS BUILT BETWEEN 1831 -1832 USING “BLUE LIAS” STONE QUARRIED FROM THE BEACH BELOW THE STATION WHICH WAS THEN WINCHED UP THE CLIFF AND DRESSED ON SITE BY VERY SKILLED MASONS AND WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF WHAT MUST HAVE BEEN MANY, MANY LABOURERS.

THE FOUNDATIONS FOR BOTH THE LOW (WEST) TOWER AND THE HIGH (EAST TOWER) WERE LAID IN THE WEEK BEFORE 1ST OCTOBER 1831 AND THE WHOLE STATION WAS COMPLETED AND EXHIBITED ITS LIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME ON 1ST SEPTEMBER 1832.

IT IS SOMETIMES SAID THAT THE LIGHTHOUSE WAS BUILT DUE TO THE LOSS OF A SHIP CALLED “THE FROLIC” WHICH WAS WRECKED ON THE NASH SANDS IN MARCH 1831 WITH THE LOSS OF ABOUT 78 LIVES INCLUDING AT LEAST ONE HIGH-RANKING MILITARY GENTLEMAN. THIS INCIDENT MAY WELL HAVE BEEN THE REASON THAT CONSTRUCTION TOOK PLACE SO SOON AND WAS COMPLETED SO QUICKLY THOUGH TRINITY HOUSE HAD PURCHASED THE LAND AND DESIGNED THE TOWERS AND THE REST OF THE STATION SOMETIME PRIOR TO THIS TRAGIC LOSS.

IT IS ALSO SOMETIMES STATED THAT TRINITY HOUSE’S ENGINEER-IN-CHIEF, JAMES WALKER BUILT THE STATION THOUGH HE DID NOT JOIN TRINITY HOUSE UNTIL 1832. IT WAS JOSEPH NELSON WHO DESIGNED AND BUILT THE STATION TOGETHER WITH HIS NEPHEW, JAMES WALKER MAY HAVE BEEN PRESENT ABOUT THE TIME THE LIGHTHOUSE WAS FULLY COMMISSIONED.

BOTH TOWERS WERE BUILT AT THE SAME TIME AND A LIGHT WAS EXHIBITED (SHONE) FROM EACH. THIS GAVE A CLEAR SET OF “LEADING LIGHTS” FOR ANY VESSELS SAILING EASTWARDS UP THE BRISTOL CHANNEL AND GUIDED THEM SOUTH OF THE DANGEROUS NASH SANDS. DURING THE EARLY 1920’S THE USE OF THE LOW TOWER WAS DISCONTINUED AND A SECTOR WAS PLACED IN THE LANTERN OF THE EAST TOWER, SHINING A RED BEAM OVER THE AREA OF THE SANDBANKS.SINCE 1832 THE LIGHTHOUSE HAS SERVED THE MARINER WELL WITH VERY FEW INCIDENTS OR MARITIME LOSSES BEING RECORDED ON THE NASH SANDS, TO THE PRESENT TIME.

Raúl Allegre - Raúl Enrique Allegre Rodríguez (born June 15, 1959) is a Mexican former professional football kicker in the National Football League for the Baltimore / Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants, and New York Jets. He played college football at Montana and Texas and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent after the 1983 NFL draft.

Allegre was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys after the 1983 NFL draft, where he had to go through a try out session. On August 23, he was traded to the Baltimore Colts, in exchange for a ninth round draft choice (#232-John Hunt). As a rookie, he made 30 field goals (franchise record) out of 35 attempts and 22 out of 24 extra points, for an 85.7% average (franchise record) and a total of 112 points (franchise record). He tied a franchise record by making 5 field goals against the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 1984, he missed 3 preseason games with a bruised heel. He injured a hamstring in the season opener and missed the next 4 contests, only appearing in 12 games. Dean Biasucci replaced him from the second to the sixth game and would remain as a kickoff specialist for the rest of the season. Allegre did not make a field goal until the eighth game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He connected on 11-for-18 field goal attempts (61.1%) and had a perfect 14-for-14 on extra point attempts.

In 1985, he made 16-of 26 field goal attempts, for a low 61.5% average and was 36-of-39 on extra points. On September 4, 1986, he was waived by the then Indianapolis Colts, after Biasucci passed him on the depth chart.

In 1986, after New York Giants' kicker Ali Haji-Sheikh was injured, the team began auditions to find a replacement. Allegre's two-week tryout was successful, kicking a 57-yard field goal that convinced Coach Bill Parcells to sign him. Because Allegre decided to call his agent before signing the contract, Parcells decided to cancel the deal, signing instead Joe Cooper. After three ineffective performances by Cooper, Parcells called Allegre back and signed him on September 25, becoming the team's sixth kicker in 19 games. During the team's Super Bowl run in 1986, he kicked game-winning field goals in consecutive weeks in a crucial mid-season stretch.[4] Allegre kicked the opening kickoff of Super Bowl XXI, with the announcer stating that "Raúl Allegre, will kick off, number 2" just before the contest began.

In 1990, he began the season as the starting kicker, before suffering an injury and clearing the way for Matt Bahr. He also did not kick in Super Bowl XXV after being replaced by Bahr in late September.

On May 22, 1991, he was released in favor of Bahr. On August 8, he signed as a free agent with the Houston Oilers. He missed a field goal against the Atlanta Falcons in preseason, before losing the position battle to Ian Howfield and being released on August 19. On October 24, he was re-signed by the Giants after Bahr suffered a thigh injury. He was cut on November 30. At the time he ranked ninth on the franchise's All-time scoring list, having made 77 out of 103 (74.8%) field goals.

On December 16, 1991, he was signed by the New York Jets to replace an injured Pat Leahy who suffered from sciatica, causing him pain in the back, hip and upper leg which would lead to Leahy's retirement. In the season finale at Miami, Allegre tied the score in the waning moments and later won the game 23-20 and a playoff berth for the Jets in an overtime thriller. He also kicked in the playoff loss against the Houston Oilers.

Allegre lost the competition for the kicker's spot on the Jets roster in training camp to Plan B free agency addition Jason Staurovsky and was released on August 28, 1992. He later decided to retire due to a back injury.

During his nine professional seasons, Allegre made 137 field goals in 186 attempts, scored 183 extra points for 594 points and didn't have any attempt blocked.

When I was a Junior in college I took a class in Roman Art History, knowing I was going to Italy come summer. I visited Pompeii in 1968 and, while living on $5 a day, 'splurged' on a ceramic tile showing a sign found on a home excavated from the volcanic ash of the volcanic eruption in 79 AD. 'Cave Canum' means 'Beware of the Dog,' and I carried this tile with me through all the places I lived. From Pompeii it journeyed to Ann Arbor, to 6 residences in Miami, to Tallahassee, and finally to our current home in Vancouver, B.C. Yesterday, when I got up to get more coffee, the tile stuck to the bottom of the coffee mug...for two steps. Then it fell.

I will so miss it and the education, the travels, and the personal history it represented...

Chartwell was the principal adult home of Sir Winston Churchill.

Churchill and his wife Clementine bought the property, located two miles south of Westerham, Kent, England, in 1922. Extensive renovations simplifying and modernising the home were undertaken directly, completely transforming it when complete. When it became clear to the Churchills in 1946 that they could not afford to run the property, a consortium of wealthy businessmen organised by Lord Camrose purchased the estate. The arrangement was that for payment of nominal rent both Sir Winston and Lady Churchill would have the right to live there until they both died, at which point the property would be presented to the National Trust. When Sir Winston died in 1965, Clementine decided to present Chartwell to the National Trust immediately. The site had been built upon at least as early as the 16th century, when the estate had been called 'Well Street'. Henry VIII is reputed to have stayed in the house during his courtship of Anne Boleyn at nearby Hever Castle. The original farmhouse was significantly enlarged and modified during the 19th century. It became, according to the National Trust, an example of 'Victorian architecture at its least attractive, a ponderous red-brick country mansion of tile-hung gables and poky oriel windows'. The estate derives its name from the well to the north of the house called 'Chart Well'. 'Chart' is an Old English word for rough ground. The highest point of the estate is approximately 650 feet above sea level, and the house commands a spectacular view across the Weald of Kent. This view 'possessed Churchill' and was certainly an important factor in persuading him to buy a house of 'no great architectural merit'. Churchill employed architect Philip Tilden to modernise and extend the house. Tilden worked between 1922 and 1924, simplifying and modernising, as well as allowing more light into the house through large casement windows. He worked in the gently vernacular architecture tradition that is familiar in the early houses of Edwin Lutyens, a style stripped of literal Tudor Revival historicising details but retaining multiple gables with stepped gable ends, and windows in strips set in expanses of warm pink brick hung with climbers. Tilden's work completely transformed the house. Similarly to many early 20th century refurbishments of old estates, the immediate grounds, which fall away behind the house, were shaped into overlapping rectilinear terraces and garden plats, in lawn and mixed herbaceous gardens in the Lutyens-Jekyll manner, linked by steps descending to lakes that Churchill created by a series of small dams, the water garden where he fed his fish, Lady Churchill's Rose garden and the Golden Rose Walk, a Golden Wedding anniversary gift from their children. The garden areas provided inspiration for Churchill's paintings, many of which are on display in the house's garden studio. In 1938, Churchill was pressed to offer Chartwell for sale for financial reasons, at which time the house was advertised as containing 5 reception rooms, 19 bed and dressing rooms, 8 bathrooms, set in 80 acres with three cottages on the estate and a heated and floodlit swimming pool. He withdrew after industrialist Sir Henry Strakosch agreed to take over his share portfolio (which had suffered heavily from losses on Wall Street) for three years and pay off heavy debts. During the Second World War, the house was mostly unused. Its relatively exposed position, in a county so near across the English Channel to German occupied France, meant it was potentially vulnerable to a German airstrike or commando raid. The Churchills instead spent their weekends at Ditchley, Oxfordshire until security improvements were completed at the prime minister's official country residence, Chequers, in Buckinghamshire. The house has been preserved as it would have looked when Churchill owned it. Rooms are carefully decorated with memorabilia and gifts, the original furniture and books, as well as honours and medals that Churchill received. The house is Grade I listed for historical reasons. The gardens are listed Grade II.

The property is currently under the administration of the National Trust. Chartwell was bought by a group of Churchill's friends in 1946, with the Churchills paying a nominal rent, but was not open to the public until it was presented to the nation in 1966, one year after Churchill's death.e of Winston Churchill

Net profit and loss between 1939 and 1971. Between 1939 and 1963, STS reported a cumulative net profit of $13.46 Million. The huge mountain of profit occurred during World War II when Seattle transit ridership was at an all time high of 130 million riders in 1944 when the city had a population of 480,000. In comparison, 130 Million rode Metro Transit in 2007 accounting for the entire of King County with a population of 1.8 Million.

Another spike right before the huge drop was during the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair.

In 1963, the STS began converting electric trolley buses to diesel motor buses. From 1963 to 1971, about 8 years, the system posted a net loss of $14 Million. Ridership in 1972 sunk to 30 million.
