At this time of year my blueberry leaves turn red.

The theme for Macro Mondays next Monday is "Look up". the rule is the camera has to be pointed vertically upwards. I hope the Macro Mondays Police don't require absolute proof it was. I had been wondering what I could do for a while when I stepped outside to do a bit of gardening. And I spotted a few potted daisies and thought that if I could put the pot on the patio table I could get underneath it and back light it with the nice sunny blue sky we have today. Well I can't swear the camera was precisely pointed vertically upwards but I can swear that I got a crick in the neck. And the little flower was blowing about in the wind too, so when that minute fly thing wandered along a petal I didn't bother trying any more. And then when I checked the image ona larger screen I saw the ugly bug hiding under there too. So that's my slapdash macro effort for the week. Now let me put my normal lens back on.

( I wish I had chopped up the plant on the right and just had blue sky there but I've finished with shooting up and will move on to something more conventional without having another go)

It was a grey, rainy, day, but it has ended on a pretty note!

Looking up, at 5pm.

Passing by Amsterdam Airport I had to quickly have a look at this hotel... It was worth the stop.

This weeks challenge was tricky! To photograph the bottom of something. So this is how I answered the challenge; it's the bottom of a hinge on a cabinet that I had "antiqued".

From the base of one of the giants on the "Trail of 100 Giants" I took this shot to emphasize the intimidating impression of our noble Sequoia trees. Respect them. Love them.

Update 9/15/2021: I just read that the Trail of 100 Giants is under threat from the lightning-caused Windy Fire. Firefighters are working hard to contain it, but the area is dry, steep, and filled with dead trees. The sequoias are well adapted to fire and will probably not be significantly harmed, but it would be a shame to see the surrounding forest charred for years. These forests have undoubtedly seen many wildfires, and will recover.

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly;

what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

Light Green [9/52 weeks]

Who would have thought it ... what a mission to find something light green without doing the obvious. Well, guess that's what these challenges are all about.

I looked up from under a tree and saw this the autumn leaves against a blue sky just had to take

Updating my take on a location I last visited a year ago, this is the west atrium inside the 35-storey CityPoint Building on Ropemaker Street. I would have used any excuse to revisit the location because it's such a beautiful example of geometric urban architecture, but my aim when reshooting this look-up was to capture a wider, sharper, brighter and slightly more balanced finish.

The image is a blend of seven exposures, allowing for a very clean finish in the shadows while controlling the highlights at the top of the atrium. Using luminosity masks combined with dodging and burning, I was also able to emphasise the structure of the building and the reflections in its glass. Finally, I desaturated the warmer colours within the windows (where, even at dusk on a quiet Sunday, there were people working), and created a gradient map to add a slightly cooler tone within the shadows.
