Kaimei brush pen on paper. This is the Chinese/Japanese character JU, longevity, written one hundred times, each one a little different. Traditionally, JU was presented to an older person on special occasions, for example, their seventy-seventh birthday. I wrote this following the piece Hakuin wrote for one of his lay followers when Hakuin was eighty-two. (from p. 157 of John Stevens' 1988 book, SACRED CALLIGRAPHY OF THE EAST published by Shambhala, Boston).
Here's another version of JU.

Gudrun at the Door
Artist: Henrik Sørensen
Creation date: 1917
An essential aspect of the painting’s composition is the placement of the woman in the doorway, with the door serving as a frame and as a border between what is taking place in front of and behind her. The woman has an introverted expression and seems both present and somewhat distant.
Born in Sweden, Henrik Sørensen became one of the most distinctive artists in Norway before and after the Second World War. He received a large part of his training abroad, including at the Académie Matisse in Paris, and he is often cited as one of the many Nordic students of Matisse. Sørensen painted The Artist’s Wife Gudrun a few years after his stay in Paris, and the painting is a fine example of his more “moderate modernism”.
The portrait has a simple form with clear shades of blue, vertical lines, and a condensed spatial effect. The monumental style is a visual homage to the sitter, the artist’s wife Gudrun Sørensen (née Cleve, 1884−1944). The couple married in 1910 and stayed together until her death in 1944. Gudrun, a trained telegraph operator, is referred to as a beautiful, modern woman, and she was in demand as a model among the Norwegian artists of the era, with not least her husband painting several portraits of her.
Sørensen would over the years create a great number of paintings within a wide variety of genres, including landscapes, religious church decorations, figure-based compositions, and politically motivated works. He also became one of his era’s leading portrait artists in Norway.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).
The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.
The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.
The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.
