The “Shou” character has been stylized by many. One of the most instantly recognizable image of this character is the round “Shou” with straight lines reflecting the strokes of the character. 我將身上的三個白色部位：指甲的月白、眼白、牙齒，用微距攝影機拍攝下來後，以電視螢幕播放，其投射出的白光照亮地上的文字。在此觀眾無法看見影像內容本身，而是透過「影像成為光線」轉換得以閱讀。而這樣的轉換也是將其物質性顯現，拍攝對象的物理特性（肉體）與承載者（影像）的物理特性互比，消減與不滅呼應了「長生」：什麼是永恆？

The idea of 2013’s ”Longevity” was from the artist, Luo, Jr-shih’s work with same name. In Luo’s work, he told a story about an Indian male whose body and mental age were only two years old, but his tooth were at the real age of 26. The reason why this story attracted me so much would be that the man’s tooth lived in the absolute physical time, but his body and soul departed from it.
After filming three white parts of my body: fingernail, the white of the eye and tooth in macro cinematograph, I played the video by LCD TV, the white light from it lightened the words on the ground. The audiences couldn’t see the content of the video, but were able to read the words with the light from the video, such kind of transportation showed the materiality of the object being photographed (body) and the medium (video), the comparison between reducing and indestructibility responded to the title “Longevity” and left a question: what’s eternality?

I'm a cheapskate. One of the ways this manifests is visiting the discontinued item shelf in the supermarket. A few months ago Safeway was blowing out an obscure brand of condensed milk for $.50. This is a great bargain . . . half the price of house brand condensed milk.
I bought all of the cans they had on hand. Eight or nine. I use the stuff to make fudge.
I love the brand name. LONGEVITY! With a picture of an elderly scholar.
I suspect this is a Vietnamese or possibly Thai brand.
The milk is actually made in the states, so it's probably not a Melamine-based dairy substitute.
One of the meanings for Wisteria in floriography is longevity. There is length in the branches, travelling along the wall, with the long blossoms cascading down.

I brought a Buddhist prayer flag to the counter-protest because the wind carries its mantra to everyone it touches. The mantra is for long-life, and I hoped its blessing would be spread to everyone around, including the members of the WBC. I knew they wouldn't change any of their viewpoints based on a bunch of "fag-lovers" standing up to them, but I dunno. They're people too. I guess I was hoping they'd benefit from anonymous goodwill, like it would spread through them in good deeds they'd do somewhere down the line. Even something small that no one would notice.

The chinese word means longevity with the peach dumplings.Sorry the word is placed the wrongway round. The figurine represents my mother-in-law wearing her cheongsam. The dumplings are homemade with lotus fillings.

A former gruit house, now a museum. We didn't actually go inside, but found these treasures strewn against an outside wall.
Gruut (Gruit) is a form of beer flavored with various herbs (some mildly psychoactive). It was popular in Europe before the use of hops in brewing.
The making of gruit is pretty much a dead art - unless you know the right people. It is delicious.

Brugge/Bruges
Belgium/Belgique/Belgie
Bruges (Brugge in Dutch) is a gem of a museum piece- almost miraculously so. It rose early enough to create its own prosperity and identity before most other cities in Northern Europe, and it faded soon enough to escape the cataclysms of the Reformation and Industrial eras.
Bruges built its fortune upon the trade and processing of wool products from England and Scotland, and upon goods from the continental interior. By the late 1100's, ships began arriving in the city's Zwin River from as far as the Hanseatic League and Venice with goods from as far as the Middle East and Russia. Trade was conducted along the canals, and Bruges quickly became arguably the most important port in Europe. This complex trade led to the development of more sophisticated financial systems, and in 1309, Bruges opened what was possibly the world's first stock exchange.
Such was the city's prosperity that when the queen of France visited in 1301 she is quoted as saying: "I thought I alone was queen, but I see that I have 600 rivals here". Bruges' richness also helped develop the earliest artists of the Northern Renaissance, most notably Jan van Eyck.
Only a year later, the French garrisoned an army in the city to settle a dispute among the ruling and merchant classes, and on the night of May 18 a revolt against French rule began with the "Bruges Matins", in which a mob filled the streets killing anyone who could not properly pronounce the Dutch phrase: "schild en vriend" (supposedly difficult to pronounce for a French speaker). Almost the entire French population (estimated at 2,000) was massacred. Over the next few years, local militias throughout Flanders drove the French out, thus permanently cementing the city in Dutch/Flemish culture.
At its peak, Bruges had a population of 200,000, and by many accounts was the second largest city in Europe after Paris. The miraculousness of Brugge as a "museum piece", however, comes from its precipitous decline. Around 1500, by one of the many whims of the North Sea, the Zwin River began to silt up. Lacking its lifeblood, the city fell into obscurity as business moved to Brussels, Ghent, and Antwerp.
It became a forgotten city, "Die tote Stadt" of Korngold's 20th century opera. Its dormancy, however, was its preservation. Hardly, if any, Baroque, Classical, or 19th century developments ever touched this town. In the past century, however, Bruges has picked up speed again, this time due to tourism.
The result- a pretty much intact medieval city, not terribly different from its original state. As such, it draws its requisite tourists, and can be seen at times a sort of historical theme park (but thankfully without the commercialization).
To walk its streets is surreal. A fever dream of sorts. The real magic is at night, when the daytrippers disappear, and the few tourists that are left hole up with locals at the bar or sit in the Grote Markt listening to the ethereal and ornate rings from the bell tower. The ancient streets then are dead quiet, the canals still, and one can feel the ghosts rising.

On our observation of recent reports on the Austrian wine vintages. 2004 was a better year as compared to its 2003, 2002, and 2001 peers with smaller crop where the helpful Neusiedlersee fog gave some of the best Botrytis found in the wines. 2002 was perceived to be of inconsistent quality but with some excellent outcome. Do taste before buying. 2001 overall was an average but good vintage, with early developing wines. We look forward to continue following the legacy of Alois Kracher though his successor and son, Gerhard.

Tasted on Friday 28.12.2007. 100% Traminer. Sugar - 171,8 g/l. 18 months in New barriques before bottling and release. 11.0%. Lovely orangy aromas and dried honey slabs. Light-bodied, with a hint of bitterness, yet balanced and a sweet tangy coy. Short to medium finish which grew soft just over the hour. Enjoyable now. Drink between 2004 and 2008. Price: S$86.00.
2002 Weinlaubenhof Alois Kracher Welschriesling TBA #3 Zwischen den Seen
Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Tasted on Friday 28.12.2007. 100% Welschriesling. Sugar- 208,0 g/l. 22 months in stainless steel tanks before bottling and release. 10.0%. Rich apricots with floral on the nose. Medium-bodied, balanced and quite straightforward with its flavors of honey and apricots with a medium and pleasant finish. Enjoyable now and drink between 2005 and 2030. Price: S$88.00.
2002 Weinlaubenhof Alois Kracher Chardonnay/Welschriesling Grande Cuvée TBA #7 Nouvelle Vague
Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
50% Chardonnay, and 50% Welschriesling. Sugar - 252,7 g/l. Fermented in new barriques and aged 23 months in oak before bottled and release. 9.0%. Full-bodied, viscosity, with heavier load of honey and pears. Despite the richness and tropical flavors, the wine came short with a disappointing short finish. Didn't not last beyond the hour in glass. Drink between 2008 and 2013.
