LOGAN

The Logan Utah Temple (formerly the Logan Temple) is the fourth constructed and the second of the still-operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Located in the city of Logan, Utah, it was the second LDS temple built in the Rocky Mountains (after the St. George Utah Temple).

The LDS temple in Logan was announced on May 18, 1877, just after the dedication of the St. George Utah Temple in April 1877. The site of the Logan Temple had been held in reserve for many years. It was used as a park and public grounds before being dedicated as the site for the temple. The Salt Lake Temple had been announced in 1847 but construction was still underway and would not be completed until 1893, so the Logan Temple was built along with the St. George Temple to satisfy the church's immediate need for temples.

Roughly 25,000 people worked on the Logan Temple. Rocks and timber used for the temple were hauled from the Temple Fork area of Logan Canyon. As completion of the temple neared, women in the area were asked to make carpets for the temple, since commercially made carpet could not be bought in Utah at that time. The women spent two months working to hand make two thousand square yards of carpet.

The Logan Temple was the second temple to be completed in the Utah area and is the sixth largest temple. It was built on a 9-acre (3.6 ha) plot selected by Brigham Young and has 4 ordinance rooms and 11 sealing rooms, with a total floor area of 119,619 square feet (11,113.0 m2).The design by the church’s head architect, Truman O. Angell, had two towers and was based on the same pattern as the Salt Lake Temple, with a large assembly hall and other similar rooms. On May 17, 1884 the Logan Temple was dedicated by LDS Church president John Taylor. The design incorporates an unusual amount of Gothic detailing compared with other temples, which are more Renaissance or Byzantine-inspired.

In 1917, a fire destroyed much of the southeast stairway of the Logan Temple. Forty thousand dollars was spent to repair it within three months. In 1949, the temple was remodeled and received updated lighting, heating, air conditioning, elevators, and other modern conveniences. In 1977, more remodeling was undertaken and the interior was completely gutted and redone. After remodeling, the temple was rededicated on March 13, 1979 by church president Spencer W. Kimball.

The Logan Temple was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 20, 1975.

‘Fairfield’

Plan for ‘Fairfield’ homestead for the Shipard family on their large property in Carnsdale, formerly near Brocklesby.

The property was taken up in 1872 by John and Henry Shipard, who worked in partnership for many years. John married Jane Elizabeth Howard in 1875. The couple lived in a wattle-and-daub dwelling until they built this stately brick home in 1912. They had ten children for whom they employed governesses.

The property has stayed within the family. John and Jane’s son Evelyn (Jock) Shipard married Nonie Styles of Yass, and they lived on the property until 1946. Reg Shipard then took over the property. His son Noel, with his wife Janet and family, now run the farm.

The Carnsdale Post Office was situated at ‘Fairfield’ in its final years, until the name was changed and the post office moved to Balldale.

The Logan Tabernacle is a tabernacle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and is located in Logan, Cache County, Utah.

The foundation of the tabernacle was begun in 1864. The building took twenty-seven years to complete. During that time, work was delayed twice. In 1873, the building work resumed and the size was enlarged from 60'/106' to 65'/130'. The second delay came in 1877 after workers had completed the exterior walls. Workers moved from the tabernacle to finish the nearby Logan Temple. Work soon resumed with the main assembly hall being finished in 1881; the completed building was dedicated in 1891 by LDS Church President Wilford Woodruff.

The building's architectural style is characterized as classically eclectic with elements of Greek, Roman, Gothic and Byzantine styles. The edifice was built entirely from local materials. The exterior walls are of local quartzite quarried in Green Canyon eight miles to the northeast. White limestone was employed for the corners and trimmings and was quarried near Franklin, Idaho some twenty miles to the north.

The Great Organ of the Logan Tabernacle was built by Henry Pilcher's Sons of Louisville, Kentucky. It was shipped to Cache Valley in 1908 and was completed as the firm's Opus 620 and dedicated in a recital on August 5, 1908. The organ was installed and voiced in the tabernacle by James Day of the Pilcher company and the local newspaper reported that visitors often stopped in to observe the work. The organ's action was originally tubular-pneumatic, a type of pipe organ action that necessitated small lead tubes from each key at the console to the pipe chambers. In 1952-53, the organ was rebuilt by the LDS Church Organ Maintenance Department under the direction of Wayne Carroll. The action was electrified, a new console installed and several ranks of original pipework were replaced and/or revoiced. In 1987 and 2009, H. Ronald Poll & Associates of Salt Lake City rebuilt and modernized the organ. The instrument currently comprises 44 pipe ranks and some 2,850 individual pipes controlled by a three manual and pedal console.
