These beams are designed to be pushed to open the lock gates. The small steps in the brickwork on the ground give you good purchase for this task. We found these gates open - a heinous crime - so we closed them.

This is a closer view of a portion of the north wall of the north chamber taken from the east end of Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 58 in Newark, NY. Lock 58, a single-length, double chamber lock was built in 1841. It was one of the three locks which were close to each other in Newark at that time. It is located off Route 31 on Lyons Street in Newark, NY.
This building seemed to be high security; it was the only one with a metal fence and bars on some windows.
Ok. All of the other windows are shut with plywood. But this window must be special because there is a gate with a lock. But it made for a good photo!

Boulter's Lock is a lock and weir on the River Thames in England on the eastern side of Maidenhead (formerly in Cookham) Berkshire. A lock was first built here by the Thames Navigation Commission in 1772. The lock is on the western side of the river between the main (A4094) Maidenhead to Cookham road and Ray Mill Island. The name is also used for the immediate surrounding area.
The weir is some way upstream of the lock, at the northern end of Ray Mill Island. It is one of the most popular whitewater freestyle kayaking areas on the River Thames, as it has had modifications made to it, to allow kayakers to play on it without causing disruption to other river users.
