That was then, this is now, August, 2007 -- and even the wooly bear caterpillars are having to scramble to find shelter from the rising flood waters. County Hwy B, just outside Cambridge, WI. Cambridge, a few miles east of Madison, had 4.5 inches of rain last night (while Madison escaped most of it -- again, these storms are very localized).

Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens) Very localized, but abundant where they occur, Snow Geese typically are seen in large numbers or not at all. Included under this heading is the "Blue Goose," long considered a separate species, now known to be only a color morph of the smaller race of Snow (Lesser Snow Goose). The two color forms mate with each other, and may produce young of either or both colors. A larger race, Greater Snow Goose, nests in far eastern regions of Canada and winters on the Atlantic Coast.

A lake is an area filled with water, localized in a basin, surrounded by land, and distinct from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean, although, like the much larger oceans, they do form part of the Earth's water cycle. Lakes are distinct from lagoons, which are generally coastal parts of the ocean. Lakes are typically larger and deeper than ponds, which also lie on land, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which usually flow in a channel on land. Most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams.

Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers, where a river channel has widened into a basin. Some parts of the world have many lakes formed by the chaotic drainage patterns left over from the last ice age. All lakes are temporary over long periods of time, as they will slowly fill in with sediments or spill out of the basin containing them.

Many lakes are artificial and are constructed for industrial or agricultural use, for hydroelectric power generation or domestic water supply, for aesthetic or recreational purposes, or for other activities.

Earlier in the day localized areas, lower valleys, and places where the winds prevailed could see significant visible smoke. By the evening hours Sunday, lingering stagnant smoke was clearly visible across all areas of the county.

The bulk of that smoke was blown into our area from large fires and woods fires in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

This same smoke pattern continues on Monday morning with visibility reduced to 3 to 5 miles in many locations.

Air quality concerns are real. People sensitive to the inhalation of particulate matter from this smoke are having frank increases in symptomology.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) issued an air quality alert for Madison and Morgan Counties on Sunday. The air quality alert indicates that ‘particulate matter concentrations are expected to reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups of people.’

Children and people with asthma are at the highest risk under these conditions.

★ THERE IS SOME GOOD NEWS ★

The wind pattern shifts today.

Winds will begin to blow from the west-southwest at 5 mph. While not a complete high-wind-clearing, at least some of the stagnant smoke layer will move out ... heading back in the direction it came.

Gentle west winds are expected on Tuesday. This should further clear significant amounts of smoke from Cullman County.

One of the most important things to address across government-run schools in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh are localizing textbooks so students can relate and interact with material in accordance to the RtE Act 2009. This includes improving challenges faced with language differences, removing gender biases, and creating more engaging group activities. Here at ICICI Foundation we facilitate this process with the Government of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh! While textbooks, and curricula are developed, rewritten and reviewed we conduct pre-service and in-service teacher training to help teachers utilize these new resources in their classrooms.
