Racism: The Elephant in the Room (or Park)

Seattle, Washington, August 17, 2015 - People are invited to participatein a public interactive art installation to expose racism as the"elephant in the room".

On Monday, August 17, 2015, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, at Westlake Parkin Seattle, the public is invited to join us in learning about racismand white privilege through visually rich, interactive art andengagement in positive dialog and seek skills for addressinginstitutional racism.

At 2 pm, the action moves from Westlake to the City Council chambers. There, activists will challenge City Council members to combatinstitutional racism by protecting Hookah Lounges, predominantly ownedby people of color and currently under attack. They will also call onthe Council to reject zoning that will permit the construction of anexpanded juvenile detention center, misleadingly called the "King CountyFamily and Children's Justice Center," stop the city-sponsoredgentrification of areas in the city that are home to people of color, and to end police brutality.

This interactive art exhibit and challenge to the City Council arecoming from a collection of activists who are from the Pacific Northwestand around the country that met at a Backbone Campaign's Localize This! Action Camp. As a group, we are predominantly white activists who are looking inwardsand reaching out to our peers to join us in this action. We arechallenging ourselves and others to move beyond denial and defensivenessto commit to taking one concrete step towards racial justice and toshare our challenge.

Backbone Campaign greeted President Obama in Seattle for a Democratic fundraiser with giant banners above his motorcade and life-like representations of the Washington State democratic delegation.

Simultaneously, people outrage by representatives not yet outright opposing the TPP packed the entrance to the Washington Convention Center where the fundraiser was being held and surrounding streets. A Star Wars themed Trans-Pacific Partnership Death Star was inflated and Rebel Alliance Starfighters standing up for sovereignty, human and workers rights, safe climate, affordable medicine and more greeted the democratic donor base as they entered.

We wanted there to be NO mistake - We the People consider a vote for the TPP a catastrophic, unforgivable BETRAYAL. An unaccountable vote planned for the post election Congressional session would add a cowardly insult to the injury of this disastrous corporate coup that shifts power away from governments to transnational corporations and the greedy who hide behind them. Washington State's Congressional delegation, especially Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and Congressmembers Denny Heck, Rick Larson, Susan DelBene, Rick Larsen and Derek Kilmer need to know they will NOT be able to show their faces in public if they BETRAY the people they are supposed to serve.

Obama's visit occurred during Backbone Campaign's 8th annual Localize This! Action Camp. Thus, we jumped at the chance to put artful activism lessons into action. Enjoy pictures and video provided by Andrew Sigman, Joyce Marin, John P Duffy and Daniel Lee. #FLUSHTHETPP #TPPisBetrayal

The project supports the investigation of nanostructure-enhanced chemical reactivity and detonation in energetic materials and the study of shock energy localization at materials heterogeneities. The outcome of this work will fill a critical gap in energetic materials modeling, enabling predictive models of performance, reliability, and failure.

Not my favorite photo I took of Gumbo today, and not an intentional one, but this one beautifully illustrates Gumbo's world. Now, once you finish reading this sentence, close your eyes and imagine a giant puppy barging into the master bedroom in our house full of hardwood floors. . . In this photo Curio stares face-to-face with the invader from their perch on the bed. But where do you localize the sound? Gumbo hears those toenails clacking on the floor. Gumbo, in his mind, faces a much shorter foe. Perhaps that's why he exudes such confidence in dealing with Magnus. Just maybe. At least a thought.

The great egret (Ardea alba), also known as the common egret, large egret or (in the Old World) great white heron, is a large, widely distributed egret. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, in southern Europe it is rather localized.

The Old World population is often referred to as the great white egret. This species is sometimes confused with the great white heron of the Caribbean, which is a white morph of the closely related great blue heron.

The great egret is a large heron with all-white plumage. Standing up to 1 m (3.3 ft) tall, this species can measure 80 to 104 cm (31 to 41 in) in length and have a wingspan of 131 to 170 cm (52 to 67 in). Body mass can range from 700 to 1,500 g (1.5 to 3.3 lb), with an average of around 1,000 g (2.2 lb). It is thus only slightly smaller than the great blue or grey heron (A. cinerea).

Apart from size, the great egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet, though the bill may become darker and the lower legs lighter in the breeding season. In breeding plumage, delicate ornamental feathers are borne on the back.

Males and females are identical in appearance; juveniles look like non-breeding adults. Differentiated from the intermediate egret (Mesophoyx intermedius) by the gape, which extends well beyond the back of the eye in case of the great egret, but ends just behind the eye in case of the intermediate egret.

It has a slow flight, with its neck retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, ibises, and spoonbills, which extend their necks in flight.

The great egret is not normally a vocal bird; it gives a low hoarse croak when disturbed, and at breeding colonies, it often gives a loud croaking cuk cuk cuk and higher-pitched squawks.

This image was taken a least two hundred miles off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean. There were a group of nine Great Egrets trying to land on the CMV Magellan which may have been on a migration route but only one of them managed to have a rest for about 30 minutes before it flew off too. As these birds cannot take off from water, if they did not find another ship to land on, they may have perished before reaching land.
