I usually think of this sort of image as a place; a place where you can go and walk around. This seems to be an elegant lobby, simple in form, but complex in ornamentation.

Karlos gave me a great idea - add a note for your country's flag!!
Occasionally, we are out and about when the lobbies of these great American skyscrapers are open, so we step in to take a few photographs. The designers and architects go to great pains to make these spaces particularly interesting as it is the only interior room that ALL visitors and tenants must visit. Naturally, there will be dramatic lighting, spaces and decoration - great photographic idea right?
Unfortunately, not always. The doormen and security guards are fiercely anti-tripod and sometimes anti-photography. I have yet to get a good idea of why this might be. It is, for all intents and purposes, a public space, and the more photos taken with a cam on a tripod the better the space will look! Some lobbies have specific rules, photos, no video - sometimes, the security folks just make something up - in this case it was photos, no tripod. Good thing for the high-ISO capacity of the D700 - handheld HDR is possible.
Perhaps next time we’ll just have to kill them with kindness until they warm up to the idea of a tripod.

Wooden columns reflected in a glass wall at the Mint Hotel near Tower Bridge. (The alternative shot in the comments gives a better perspective of what you're looking at).

As a touring musician, I spend a lot of time in hotel lobbies. I snapped this quick pic during an early morning lobby call for the band to catch the shuttle to the airport during our last day in, Maspalomas, Gran Canaria.
When we lived in New Mexico, Stu and I visited the Air stream Trailer store and this is their lobby.
Katrin and I stopped by for a coffee in this brand new hotel.

Quality Inn Hotel lobby, Idaho Falls, Idaho.
The building is circular and has some great views of both the falls and the town. Due to the shape of the hotel, the rooms have some interesting shapes and layouts but we will be back. Cool place.

The morbid "Belvedere" in the mountains above Lake Maggiore (Italy/Piedmont) was a popular restaurant and hotel in the 1960s.

Main entrance into the lobby of the old Con Edison Building at 601 W 5th Street. Built in 1931, this Art Deco gem was the 1st building in the Western US to have electrical heating and cooling. There are 17 kinds of marble in the lobby.
The stillness of an empty office lobby.
I like shooting thru windows and finding interesting lines and light.
