Nothing unusual about this Elicser mural tucked into St. Mathias alley of Queen Street. He is the most prolific muralist in the city, which is not surprising, as he is one of the best. I caught him few times painting. Last time when he was painting a mural on Queen Street he called Communication. He said it took him bit longer to finish, as there was a bit of 'communication' problem with the people who requested the commission. This mural is called Dave. Obviously.

Politicians talk, artists paint, but little is done. There is a global climate change for decades now; a real pandemic, never been declared by WHO. If you have ever been or know somebody in forest fire area, you know that breathing is difficult. Breathing is kind of essential for any living organism. 'Shalak Attack' (Elisa Monreal) is a Chilean- Canadian artist, who has the most striking colourful images in the city. Many times she depicts some social aspect close to her heart.

The sculpture is actually called 'Neighbours' (2001) and the sculptor is Joe Rosenthal. Today I went shopping. As I parked the car, I noticed 2 women outside leaning on their shopping carts in similar fashion. When I came back from the store, they were still there, still posing for Joe Rosenthal, but he was not there to record it. I did not pull out my camera, as I did not want to be voyeuristic, intrusive and predatory. Multifaceted artist Joseph Rosenthal was born in Kishinev and died in Toronto in 2018 at age 97. Sculpturing extends your life!

Of course that is true at least geographically. The other meaning of downhill is a matter of opinion. Downtown stretch of Yonge Street is (was) iconic part of Toronto. It was always swinging between chic and sleazy. At one point it was the entrainment center of TO with the most live musical venues in the city within few blocks. Developers took over few years ago and now only few sections of the old are left. Aided by rubber stamping (building permits) city hall and ravages of pandemic killing businesses, it will be soon non-descript "couldbeanywhereintheworld" area, where sun will never reach the sidewalk. Some see it as urban renewal at its finest; I see it as a loss of something irreplaceable.

On the other hand, all that is even on my FB profile.

The Main Railway station (1871) is a treasure of sculptural architectural art. Unfortunately the Czech 'top minds' decided to put major highway (1973-1980) right in front of it and so the exhaust from vehicles is slowly eroding this beautiful building. Sculptors Stanislav Sucharda and Ladislav Šaloun are responsible for most of the decoration. Sucharda got in trouble with moralist of that time with his highly realistic art. If this was done today in Toronto, it would be most likely removed after 1 week.

Unless you know about the sculptures, it would be hard to come across them. The memory of suffering of Ireland famine was replaces by thousands of other tragedies in recent wars and natural or man made disasters. There are five bronze sculptures by Rowan Gillespie near the Island Airport. ‘Pius Mulvey’ sculpture shows the suffering of the long voyage on the sea. Nearby is limestone monument to the 675 victims who did not survive the journey to Canada in 1847.

Karlovy Vary is famous for its wonderful city architecture, foul tasting, but healthy waters, Jan Becher liquor and it is a great tourist destination. After Prague and Cesky Krumlov the visitors would probably pick this city. This view is one of many you can get from the hills above river Tepla. It seems almost like a Hollywood film prop, but believe me it's real.

This corner and this area of Bay Street/ Dundas are in the need for some improvement. The Toronto Bus terminal has been recently terminated and there is room for some 'much needed' condo apartments. This hotel was built in Renaissance Revival style together with five smaller Bay-n-Gable dwellings in 1891. One of the first occupants was 'J. C. Lawson Eating House' in 1895. Bay Street is a desirable location for any business and the owners of the hotel on the corner waited for opportune time to sell. The last name of this hotel was BE Sixfifty. Its predecessor, 'The Bay Street Hotel' placed SECOND! as the 'Dirtiest Hotel in Canada' in 2009 and closed in 2010. The rooms in this hotel were supper cheap, with rooms going for $40. Not sure if that was for an hour. The bottom floor was a Greek restaurant for a while. This neighbourhood was a bohemian area in 1950's-60's, before development drove the cafes and galleries to Yorkville.

I think, with reasonable doubt, it is Austin Motor Company J2 Omnivan from 1962. There are not probably too many around, and the only way I identified it was, that Austin sponsored Canadian Race Communication Association, which is the emblem on the side of the vehicle. I am really proud of myself. Such vans were used for milk, bread delivery and even as a police or school vehicle.

In my neck of woods people are bombarded with advertising of easy money. Ontario has provincial gambling agency. Few years ago, you would go to jail for promoting gambling, unless it was for 'good cause'. These days government is in business to extract money from fools. You will not get addicted, as government includes warnings on their promotions. But do not expect that they will pay your rent, if the warning doesn't work.

Domino is a popular street game, probably right after futbol and beisbal. I do not recall, if I ever seen the game played in Canada and did not play it myself since I was probably 10 years old. I love how this game brings people of all ages together. Played mostly by men, but teenagers and women are playing with the same intensity. Money is not involved, at least it's not obvious to a random observer. There are parallels to be drawn with crumbling walls of the cities and the falling domino pieces.

Stores like this, with original signage from the 1950's or earlier, are disappearing from the streets of Prague. To me, these give character and identity to the city. After 1989 many people tried their luck with opening new business. Some succeeded, some failed, but invariably new store sign, replaced the old one. There are still many old signs, especially at drinking establishments. These are treasured the most. Notice the wooden store front (by Vladimír Čenský -1878). I took a photo here in 2018 and it looks like there is a different business operating on the premises. Klobouky (hats) where still in the shop windows, but Prádlo (generic term- but in this case probably undergarments) side is now selling souvenirs and tchotchkes. The building itself is from 1842.

Cameron has a long history on Queen West and many of today's top musicians started their career there. The building is from 1880 (build for Angus Cameron dry goods store) It became a hotel in 1920's and in the 1980's the street level morphed into entertainment venue. Some of the performers lived upstairs at one time or other. Cameron was one of the first venues which launched Queen West edginess. I rarely frequent this place. Somehow, I do not feel that I fit.

The Trillium Park and Bill Davis Trail opened quietly in 2017. It is still not very well known in Toronto. Ontario Place was closed to public since 2011 and many people assume it's still closed or that there is nothing there. I live nearby, so I visit occasionally. This year there was a jazz festival there, the only live one in 2021. It was sparingly attended, but is suited me.

I love these trees in the fall. They are uniformly yellow and light up the street or backyard. They are called Honey Locus and are quite common in the city. Unassuming during the year; they shine in October.

The silhouettes of men cover this large building. Not sure of the meaning, but it dominates the plaza near Malecon. It was commissioned for Havana 13th Biennial. Painted in April 2019 by Spanish artist Suso33. This is a small detail of the massive work.
