This adult female has not quite finished her meal here. Once a spider has caught its prey and will want to eat its food the first step is to literally vomit a digestive fluid all over the food and then to chew the item with the jaws (chelicerae), then on to suck up the fluid back into the mouth together with the liquified meat. Some spiders can produce at least six different kinds of silk and if spiders were scaled to the same size as us it is said that the Web would be strong enough to catch a helicopter. It has also been claimed that a cable of silk as thick as a thumb woven from spider silk would be able to bear the weight of a jumbo jet.

The spiders main primary function is to quickly immobilize and subdue its prey and start the digesting process. The venom can contain many different substances which can include amino acids, proteolytic enzymes and neurotoxic polypeptides. This adult female has not quite finished her meal here. This spider is usually found low down in vegetation in a funnel web often in brambles, gorse and heather, In late summer the female will construct a chamber within the web which is made up of a complex maze of silken tubes that will contain her egg sac and will often be seen guarding the entrance. The spiders main primary function is to quickly immobilize and subdue its prey and start the digesting process. The venom can contain many different substances which can include amino acids, proteolytic enzymes and neurotoxic polypeptides. Once a spider has caught its prey and will want to eat its food the first step is to literally vomit a digestive fluid all over the food and then to chew the item with the jaws (chelicerae), then on to suck up the fluid back into the mouth together with the liquified meat. It has also been claimed that a cable of silk as thick as a thumb woven from spider silk would be able to bear the weight of a jumbo jet. Unfortunately most of us have been brought up in life from young children to fear a spider and most will feel sorry for the bee straight away but how many feel sorry for the bee in a beak of a stunning looking Bee-Eater Bird or the Stickleback fish repeatably being hit on a branch before being swallowed down whole by a stunning blue King Fisher or even a earth worm that snaps in half when being pulled out of the ground by our friendly Robbin in our gardens. The answer is not many as all three do not have eight legs and look like a spider, its a funny old world that we live in.

There are 16 species of Araneidae to be found in the UK and all with 8 eyes and many and have distinctive abdominal patterns. Some species can be found in a variety of colours but will always have the abdominal patterns usually remaining the same. Can sometimes be known as the Pumpkin Spider, Cross Orb Weaver, Crowned Orb Weaver or Diadem Spider. These spiders are also Cannibals and will prey on each other which sometimes happen when mating just before or after sexual activity. Once a spider has caught its prey and will want to eat its food the first step is to literally vomit a digestive fluid all over the food and then to chew the item with the jaws (chelicerae), then on to suck up the fluid back into the mouth together with the liquified meat. Take a moment and really look at the terrain below. If you were standing here May 17th, 1980 you wouldn't have been able to see it because you would have been standing in an old growth forest of Douglas Fir on both sides of the river. The valley, which was six hundred feet deeper, was lush with ferns and flowers were beginning to bloom because, like in this shot, the snow had just melted. The initial blast from Mount Saint Helens started at 220 mph and accelerated to approximately 670 mph, (the blast was heard in Montana but not in Portland Oregon leading some to believe that it was supersonic) about the speed of sound, and ripped ALL soil and vegetation from the valley before burying it in a tidal wave of debris propelled by gas and the instantly liquified glaciers.
It is against the law to walk off trail anywhere in the blast zone which extends from the crater nearly 15 miles down that valley, (about the Hoffstadt Bluff Rest Area) as scientists from all over the globe study this erosion, growth, sediment deposits etc. to gain a better understanding of the effects of these violent Earth burps. (patent pending) :)

DID YOU KNOW? Feathers are fed to the grebe chicks almost immediately after hatching. In fact, feathers are very often the first item eaten by newly hatched chicks of many grebe species. So these grebes evolved to use their feathers as a way to slow down digestion. The feathers form dense balls in the digestive tract and appear to slow the passage of food long enough that the food can be safely liquified. The bird then regurgitates the tough bits within a ball of feathers.
