In January 1535, Pizarro founded the city of Lima, a project he considered his greatest achievement. Quarrels between Pizarro and his longtime comrade-in-arms Diego Almagro culminated in the Battle of Las Salinas. Almagro was captured and executed, and, on 26 June 1541, his embittered son assassinated Pizarro in Lima. The conqueror of Peru was laid to rest in the Lima Cathedral.

Francisco Pizarro (Trujillo, 16 maart 1476 - Lima, 26 juni 1541) was een Spaans ontdekkingsreiziger en conquistador.
Hij verliet Spanje op 10 november 1502 en kwam aan in het Caraïbisch gebied. Toen hij in 1522 hoorde over de successen van Hernán Cortés en verhalen over gebieden langs de oostkust van wat we nu kennen als Zuid-Amerika, stelde hij een gezelschap samen waaronder Diego de Almagro, een gelukszoeker in Panama, om nieuwe gebieden in het zuiden te ontdekken. Met 114 man kwam hij in 1524 niet verder dan Punta Quemada in het huidige Colombia. In 1531 vertrok Pizarro met een nieuwe expeditie uit Panama met drie schepen, 180 man en 27 edelen.Pizarro stichtte een nieuwe stad aan de kust die later Lima zou gaan heten. Een hoofdstad aan de kust was voor de van zee komende Spanjaarden namelijk veel handiger als bruggenhoofd dan de in de bergen gelegen oorspronkelijke Incahoofdstad Cuzco.

The Basilica Cathedral of Lima is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the Plaza Mayor of downtown Lima, Peru. Construction began in 1535, and the building has undergone many reconstructions and transformation since, however it still retains its colonial structure and facade. It is dedicated to St John, Apostle and Evangelist.
