I thought it was proununciated "likey-likey" but the proper Hawaiian way is "LEE-kay-LEE-kay".

I just don't want anybody going to Oahu and ask directions to the "likey-likey" highway when in fact you are looking for the "LEE-kay-LEE-kay" highway.

The Royal Mausoleum of Hawaii, also known as Mauna 'Ala (Fragrant Hills), located at 2261 Nu'uana Avenue, is the final resting place of Hawaii's two prominent royal families: the Kamehameha Dynasty and the Kalākaua Dynasty. The 2.7-acre site was designed by architect Theodore Heuck and initially planned by King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma following the death of their son in 1862. After it was completed in 1865, the remains of seven monarchs were transferred from the first Royal Mausoleum at 'Iolani Palace. Today, Mauna Ala is recognized by Congress as sacred land and not part of public domain.

The grounds of the mausoleum are surrounded by a black fence, bearing the royal seal of the Kingdom of Hawaii at the gate. The former mausoleum building, now a small gothic chapel sits in the center, immediately behind the tomb of Kalākaua Crypt, and to the right of the Kamehameha tomb, Bishop Monument, and Wyllie tomb.

The Kalākaua Crypt was built between 1907 and 1910, and is still unsealed for additional descendents (although it appears to be out of space). On June 24, 1910, Queen Lili'uokalani oversaw the moving of Queen Kapi'olani's family, to the 'Ewa side of the wall, and King Kalākaua's family, to the Waikiki side of the wall, from the old mausoleum building.

Among those entombed in the Kalākaua crypt are: King Kalākaua, Queen Kapi'olani, Queen Lili'uokalani, Prince Consort John Owen Dominis, High Chief Caesar Kaluaiku Kapa'akea, High Chiefess Analea Keohokālole, Princess Miriam Likelike, Archibald Scott Cleghorn, Princess Victoria Kai'ulani, Prince William Pitt Leleiohoku II, Prince Moses Kapa'akea, Prince James Kaliokalani, Prince Kinini Kapa'akea, Princess Anna Ka'iulani, Princess Kaimina'auao, Princess Virginia Poʻomaikelani, Princess Victoria Kūhiō Kekaulike, Prince David Kawānanakoa, Abigail Campbell Kawānanakoa, Prince Edward Abner Keli'iahonui, and Prince Kūhiō Kalaniana'ole.

Queen Lili'uokalani (September 2, 1838 - November 11, 1917), born Lydia Kamaka'eha Kaola Mali'i Liliʻuokalani, and also known as Lydia Kamaka'eha Pākī or Kaolupoloni K. Dominis, was the last monarch and only queen regnant of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Her husband, John Owen Dominis, would became Governor of O'ahu and Maui.

When Lunalilo, the elected successor to Kamehameha V to the Hawaiian thrown died and left no heir, Lili'u's sided with brother, David Kalākaua, in an election against Queen Emma. When David's younger brother died in 1876, he chose Lili'u as heir apparent and Crown Princess. She inherited the throne on January 29, 1891.

One of her first acts was to abrogate teh existing 1887 Bayonet Constitution that Kalākaua was forced to sign, under the threat of death. American and European business interests, threatened by the act, organized a coup d'état with ultimate goal of annexation. The Queen was deposed in 1893 and she temporarily relinquished her throne to a provisional government. On July 4, 1894 the Republic of Hawai'i was proclaimed. The Queen was later arrested for her perceived role in the failed 1895 Counter-Revolution and sentecned to five years in prison, which was later commuted to house arrest.

The grounds of the mausoleum are surrounded by a black fence, bearing the royal seal of the Kingdom of Hawaii at the gate. The former mausoleum building, now a small gothic chapel sits in the center, immediately behind the tomb of Kalākaua Crypt, and to the right of the Kamehameha tomb, Bishop Monument, and Wyllie tomb.

The Kalākaua Crypt was built between 1907 and 1910, and is still unsealed for additional descendents (although it appears to be out of space). Queen Lili'uokalani (September 2, 1838-November 11, 1917), born Lydia Kamaka'eha Kaola Mali'i Liliʻuokalani, and also known as Lydia Kamaka'eha Pākī or Kaolupoloni K. Dominis, was the last monarch and only queen regnant of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. Her husband, Prince Consort of the Kingdom of Hawaii John Owen Dominis (March 10, 1832-August 27,1891), son of sea captain John Domininis, was an American-born statesman and the Royal Governor of Mauai and O'ahu. He also served as Royal Commander of the Royal Order of Kamehameha and the Royal Order of Kalākaua, and on the King's Privy Council, and in the House of Nobles.

Prince William Pitt Leleiohoku II, born William Pitt Leleiohoku Kalaho'olewa (1855–1877), brother of King David Kalākaua and Queen Queen Lili'uokalani, was a prince of the Kingdom of Hawai'i and member of the reigning House of Kalākaua. He is remembered for composing the Hawaiian war chant, used by the Hawaiian sovereignty movement today.

He served in office from February 12, 1874 until his death in San Francisco, California, on January 20, 1891. The first surviving son of his father High Chief Caesar Kaluaiku Kapaʻakea and his mother High Chiefess Analea Keohokālole, David Kalākaua was overwhelming defeated by the more liberal William Lunalilo in an 1872 election to succeed the heirless King Kamehameha V. When Lunalilo died two years later, Kalākaua was elected to replace him. Kalākaua erected 'Iolani Palace after an 1881 trip around the world studying other rulers. He was also a big supporter of Polynesian culture. Under his reign, hula, which had been banned by Queen Ka'ahumanu in 1830, the surfing, and the Hawaiian martial art, Lua, were all revived, and his support of the newly introduced ukulele led to its symbolic standing in Hawaiian culture.

Kapi'olani (December 31, 1834 – June 24, 1899), formally Esther Julia Kapi'olani or Esther Julia Kapi'olani Napelakapuokaka'e was the granddaughter of Kaumuali'i, the last king of the island of Kaua'i, and stepdaughter of Queen Regent Ka'ahumanu. Her first marriage was to High Chief Benjamin Namakehaokalani, sometimes called Bennet Namakeha, the son of Keali'imaika'i, brother of Kamehameha the Great. She then married High Chief David Kalākaua in 1863 and reigned as Queen Consort of the Kingdom of Hawai'i after he became King in 1874 until his death in 1891. As Queen, she was known for her philanthropy and support for the preservation of of Hawaiian culture. She founded the Kapi'olani Maternity Hospital for native Hawaiian mothers, which surived today as the Kapi'olani Medical Center.

Princess Victoria Ka‘iulani Kawekio I Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn. was born on 16 October 1875. Her name means “the royal sacred one” in Hawaiian. She was the daughter of Princess Miriam Likelike (Miriam Kapili Kekauluohi Likelike), and Archibald Scott Cleghorn, a businessman and owner of one of the most successful mercantile chains in Hawaii. Archibald also became known as Hawaii’s Father of Parks and served as O'ahu County Parks Commissioner. She was the last crown princess of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Ka`iulani spent her childhood in a paradise setting at `Âinahau (cool land) in Waikiki. Her companions during her years in Hawaii were her governesses. First Miss Barnes, then Miss Gertrude Gardinier, and later Miss de Alcald.

Princess Ka'iulani spoke several languages fluently and was known to have been a strong young woman who loved the outdoors, where she rode on horseback, surfed, paddled and sometimes swam out beyond the breakers, so it was a shock when she died suddenly on the 6 March 1899.

The Royal Mausoleum of Hawaii, also known as Mauna 'Ala (Fragrant Hills), located at 2261 Nu'uana Avenue, is the final resting place of Hawaii's two prominent royal families: the Kamehameha Dynasty and the Kalākaua Dynasty. The 2.7-acre site was designed by architect Theodore Heuck and initially planned by King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma following the death of their son in 1862. After it was completed in 1865, the remains of seven monarchs were transferred from the first Royal Mausoleum at 'Iolani Palace. Today, Mauna Ala is recognized by Congress as sacred land and not part of public domain.

The grounds of the mausoleum are surrounded by a black fence, bearing the royal seal of the Kingdom of Hawaii at the gate. The former mausoleum building, now a small gothic chapel sits in the center, immediately behind the tomb of Kalākaua Crypt, and to the right of the Kamehameha tomb, Bishop Monument, and Wyllie tomb.

The Kalākaua Crypt was built between 1907 and 1910, and is still unsealed for additional descendents (although it appears to be out of space). On June 24, 1910, Queen Lili'uokalani oversaw the moving of Queen Kapi'olani's family, to the 'Ewa side of the wall, and King Kalākaua's family, to the Waikiki side of the wall, from the old mausoleum building.

King David Kalākaua, known simply as Kalākaua, born David La'amea Kamanakapu'u Mahinulani Nalaiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalākaua, and sometimes called The Merrie Monarch (November 16, 1836 - January 20, 1891), was the last reigning king of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. He served in office from February 12, 1874 until his death in San Francisco, California, on January 20, 1891. The first surviving son of his father High Chief Caesar Kaluaiku Kapaʻakea and his mother High Chiefess Analea Keohokālole, David Kalākaua was overwhelming defeated by the more liberal William Lunalilo in an 1872 election to succeed the heirless King Kamehameha V. When Lunalilo died two years later, Kalākaua was elected to replace him. Kalākaua erected 'Iolani Palace after an 1881 trip around the world studying other rulers. He was also a big supporter of Polynesian culture. Under his reign, hula, which had been banned by Queen Ka'ahumanu in 1830, the surfing, and the Hawaiian martial art, Lua, were all revived, and his support of the newly introduced ukulele led to its symbolic standing in Hawaiian culture.

Kapi'olani (December 31, 1834 – June 24, 1899), formally Esther Julia Kapi'olani or Esther Julia Kapi'olani Napelakapuokaka'e was the granddaughter of Kaumuali'i, the last king of the island of Kaua'i, and stepdaughter of Queen Regent Ka'ahumanu. Her first marriage was to High Chief Benjamin Namakehaokalani, sometimes called Bennet Namakeha, the son of Keali'imaika'i, brother of Kamehameha the Great. She then married High Chief David Kalākaua in 1863 and reigned as Queen Consort of the Kingdom of Hawai'i after he became King in 1874 until his death in 1891. As Queen, she was known for her philanthropy and support for the preservation of of Hawaiian culture. She founded the Kapi'olani Maternity Hospital for native Hawaiian mothers, which surived today as the Kapi'olani Medical Center.

'Iolani Palace, located at 364 South King Street, was built between 1879 and 1882 as the official residence for King Kalākaua and Queen Kapi'olani, and then late for Queen Lili'uokalani. The only royal palace used in such capacity by a reigning monarch in the United States, following the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, it was used in succession as the capitol building for the Provisional Government, Republic, Territory, and State of Hawai'i until 1969 at which point it was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1978.

The current structure replaced a one-story wooden building called Hanailoia built for Princess Victoria Kamāmalu and purchased by King Kamehameha III when he moved his capital from Lahaina to Honolulu in 1845. During Kamehameha V's reign, the name was changed to 'Iolani Palace, literally meaning "royal hawk." The 'Iolani Barracks, designed by Theodore Heuck, were added in 1871, to house the royal guards. When David Kalākaua assumed the throne, he ordered the original palace razed and commissioned a new one to be fashioned after the modern palaces he visited throughout Europe.

The brick and concrete-faced building was designed by Thomas J. Baker, Charles J. Wall and Isaac Moore in a unique style known as American Florentine at a lavish cost of over $340,000. It measures 140-feet by 100-feet and rises two stories over a raised basement to a height of 54-feet with four corner towers and two center towers rising to a height of 76-feet. The first floor is dominated by a grand hall, facing a staircase made of koa wood, that adjoins to a throne room, a blue meeting room and a dining room. Upstairs are a private library and bedrooms. The palace was wired with both electricity and telephones, before even the White House.

Upon the overthrow of the monarchy by the Committee of Safety in 1893, troops of the newly the newly formed Provisional Government of Hawaiʻi took control of ʻ'Iolani Palace, which a few months later was renamed the "Executive Building" for the Republic of Hawai'i. Government officials auctioned off any furniture or furnishing unsuitable for government operations. Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned for nine months in a small room on the upper floor, where she crafted a quilt that is still on display, after the second of the Wilcox rebellions in 1895. Her trial was held in the former throne room.

The Palace area was originally enclosed by an eight-foot high coral block wall with wooden gates. Following the Wilcox Rebellion in 1889, it was lowered to 3'6". In 1891, it was topped with the present painted iron fence. The four principle gates each display the Coat of Arms of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and have a distinctive name and purpose--Kauikeaouli, which was named in honor of King Kamehameha III and used for ceremonial occasions; Kina'u, which was named after the mother of Kings Kamehameha IV and used by tradesmen; Hakaleleponi, which was named for Queen Kalama, consort of Kamehameha III and used by servants and retainers of the royal household; and Likelike, which was given the name of Princess Likelike, sister to King Kalakaua and Queen Lili`uokalani and reserved for private use by the royal family.
