Exiting from the Wilson Tunnel on the windward side of Oahu provides a sunrise view of the spectacular Ko’olau pali. The steep cliff (pali) may be a portion of the interior west wall of the Ko’olau volcano caldera and rift zone or subsequent erosion. The Ko’olaupoko was formed during a massive landslide when the seaward side of the Ko’olau caldera sloughed off into the Pacific Ocean about a million years ago. The fluted columns of the cliff face were carved by subsequent stream erosion from the nearly constant presence of orographic cumulus that cap the mountain and resulting relief precipitation that dissects the basalt, irrigates the dense rainforest, and recharges the aquifer. The cliffs in this area rise to 2,700+ feet.

The 1900s are a remarkably productive period for the small yet enthusiastic group of early Hawai'i breeders.
Creating hundreds of new hybrids with exciting variations in color, form, and flower size, early breeders introduce real diversity to the world of hibiscus.
Many early breeders belong to upper-class Hawaii society and travel often, bringing foreign hybrids back to the islands to use as parents. Some of these introduced hybrids are planted in this section.
Early breeders also fuel worldwide demand for Hawaii hybrids, as they generously share their creations with fellow breeders around the world.
Sources differ on who creates the first Hawai'i hibiscus hybrid.
Some think it is Archibald Scott Cleghorn, wife of Princess Miriam Likelike and father to Princess Ka'iulani. Others believe Walter Le Montais Giffard creates Hawaii's first hybrid in 1902.
Whoever was first, both men are linked by their passions for hibiscus and the outdoors. Cleghorn helps found Kapi'olani Park, and becomes the first City and County of Honolulu Parks Commissioner. Giffard serves as Kapi'olani Park Commissioner, and is known throughout Hawaii's powerful sugar industry for his advancements in sugarcane seed propagation.

Three highways connect Honolulu metro area to the east coast of Ohau--the Likelike Highway goes through the middle mountain pass, the H-3 Interstate goes through on the far left, and the Pali Highway goes through the pass on the right. Photographed from a Breezy aircraft.
Those clouds are coming from the east or windward coast, and as they are pushed up over the mountains they drop much of their moisture--about 120 inches of rainfall in this area, and as much as 280 inches annually in the higher peaks to the north of this range.

Took a short Hike to Likelike Falls yesterday since it is so close to our house. Hawaii has many lovely waterfalls around the Islands, just don't have enough time to get out to see them all since many require a hike. It is difficult to capture and image of these falls because of the surrounding trees and rocks. Most images look unleveled or slightly "off". This image is level! Aloha

Longtime local favorite LIkelike Drive Inn restaurant on Keeaumoku Street at Kanunu Street. LDI opened 1953 and closed April 2020 after 67 years in business, so aloha to another victim of the extended covid-19 shutdown.
The vantage point here is a mid level floor at the 21 floor 1967 Holiday Village Apartments at the intersection of Amana and Kanunu Streets. This area is a couple of blocks north of Ala Moana Shopping Center.

Had to get a close up of the pink flower petals covering the ground at a recent hike to Likelike Falls in Kaneohe, Hawaii. Was a wonderful find, full of so much color.

No it is not the Super Moon of 2013, but some awesome lighting that was set up for a performance to be held at the beach in Waikiki - the Hale Koa/ Fort Derussey, Hawaii. Wish that I could have made it back for the actual event. This is a HDR of 5 images. Thanks for looking.
An overturned car on the Kaneohe side of the Likelike Hwy. There didn't appear to be anyone injured (as firemen chatted around the accident nonchalantly), The man was looking through items possibly trying to salvage personal belongings.

We arrived here after a Sunday morning visit to Pearl Harbor. We took the bike up and over Likelike Hwy (lee-kay lee-kay), which passes through Ko'olau Mountain via the Wilson Tunnel.
The experience of driving Northeast through the tunnel, especially on a motorcycle, gives one a feeling of falling through space; lights flying past on both sides at perfectly symmetrical pace. An echoing cacophony of vehicle sounds and exhaust gas swirling around you adds to the sense chaos as you plummet through the mountain towards an unseen exit.
After eating ono steaks ("good to eat" strips of beef) with macaroni salad and rice, as well as some fish, we continued along the coast, which near Sandy Beach's backbreaking shore-break, puts the road right next to colorful cliffs.
