Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Colorado
The Gunnison River, a tributary of the Colorado River, has a section of gorge that is extremely deep and very narrow with impressively sheer walls carved into Precambrian basement rock. It is said that certain parts of the gorge receive direct sun light for only a half hour a day, hence the name "Black Canyon".
This section of the canyon near the Painted Wall was being lit by the setting sun. The light colored streaks of rock in the canyon walls are pegmatite, a volcanic intrusion also from Precambrian times.
The first light of the day (about 11 AM) peeks over the ridge and illuminates the charcoal kilns at Canyon Creek, MT. These are 3 of the 23 kilns at the site. They were built in the late 1800's to supply the silver smelters at Glendale (now a ghost town) 5 miles down the road.
The kilns were located close to the timber, and according to the Beaverhead National Forest, more than 11,000 acres of wood were used to fuel the operation between 1880 and 1900 when the kilns and smelter were active.
Today, the kilns exist in various states of ruin, including 3 fully restored, whitewashed ones and some that are mere piles of rubble in an approximate ring. It is a delightful spot to visit, and if you go, you might very well be the only soul at the spot. I took my two boys (4 and 9) here on Saturday, and we had the place to ourselves the whole time we were there (about an hour).

The fascinating atmosphere of the Red Dot Design Museum Essen is created by the contrast between old and new, between industrial architecture and product culture. The museum is housed in the boiler house of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, placing it at the heart of one of the most important industrial monuments of the 20th century, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
Beautiful misted late evening winter light streaming through a once magnificent avenue of lime trees. Sadly many are now fallen and although replanted they will never look as stunning as they once did. Ah, such is life.

The unmistakable sound of Bere Gratis filled Sibiu's historic city centre during the 2026 Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS). One of Romania's most enduring and popular pop-rock bands, Bere Gratis have been entertaining audiences for more than a quarter of a century with their infectious melodies, energetic live performances and crowd-pleasing anthems. As darkness fell, dramatic stage lighting and a sea of enthusiastic fans transformed the festival into a celebration of Romanian live music, proving why the band continues to attract generations of concertgoers.
Taken last November on a trip through the Narrows. It was my first trip bringing my 6x17 in the Narrrows and it certainly didn't disappoint.

As this strong thunderstorm approached, the ragged cloud base is referred to as the "whale's mouth" formation*. The sun breaking through the overcast lit the foreground landscape and created an unreal scene.

* The "whale's mouth" formation in severe thunderstorms refers to a visual phenomenon where the underside of a cumulonimbus cloud, typically associated with thunderstorms, resembles the open mouth of a whale. This is often linked to specific storm structures, such as:
Rear-Flank Downdraft (RFD) or Forward-Flank Downdraft (FFD): The "whale's mouth" appearance is caused by a clear slot or wedge of dry, sinking air that wraps around the storm's mesocyclone or updraft area. This creates a dramatic, curved, and sometimes striated cloud feature that looks like a gaping mouth.
Shelf Cloud or Arcus Cloud: In some cases, the leading edge of a thunderstorm's outflow boundary forms a low, horizontal, wedge-shaped cloud that can resemble a whale's mouth, especially when illuminated by lightning or sunlight.
Visual Characteristics: The formation often appears as a sharp, well-defined edge with a turbulent, rolling look, sometimes with mammatus clouds (pouch-like structures) hanging from the underside, enhancing the resemblance.
This feature is most commonly seen in supercell thunderstorms or intense squall lines, where strong wind shear and dynamic processes sculpt the cloud structure. It’s a striking visual cue for storm chasers and meteorologists, often indicating a powerful storm with potential for severe weather like tornadoes, hail, or damaging winds.
My cousin has some Matilija poppies growing on his property so I documented the one that I could get closest to.
Lighting stuff: Lit with one manual Yongnuo flash in an 8.6 inch Lastolite soft box, hand held at 10 o'clock above the flower. The flash and my tripod mounted camera were triggered with a Yongnuo RF-603N.

My second evening visit to Ebury Bridge, just outside London Victoria station, and more light in the sky this time as the days get longer. The Battersea Power Station lights have just come on and provide a fine spectacle in the fading light. The hardest part about taking these photos is trying to get the trains in convenient and photogenic positions. 13th March 2024.
DIABLO LAKE DAM LIGHTING IN EVENING LIGHT

Did you know: At 389 feet tall, Diablo Dam was the tallest dam in the world at the time it was completed in 1930.
One of three dams along the upper Skagit River in Whatcom County, Washington and part of the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project that supplies Seattle with a large proportion of its power needs. The dam was built in Diablo Canyon, a gorge of solid granite with vertical walls rising 160 feet from the river bed, yet were less than 100 feet apart. Construction began in 1927, and was completed in 1930. The dam began generating electricity in 1936.
Ubiquitous Canada Goldenrods with an expanse of Indian Grass in the background. Just a small difference in elevation makes for interesting changes in lighting when the sun is on the horizon. Have a nice Thursday!
