CABO ESPICHEL (lit. Cape Espichel) is a cape located near Sesimbra, Portugal. Tourists are drawn there due to breathtaking views of its cliffs facing the Atlantic Ocean.

The location is famous for the a sanctuary complex (lit. Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel), built extremely close to the edge of the tall cliffs, and still in use after more than 700 years.

Also famous, are the several dinosaur fossil trackways exposed in some of the now tilted Jurassic strata which form the cape's cliffs. It is said that local superstition interpreted the trackways as the path taken by the saint when riding a giant mule from the ocean and up the cliffs, which led to the eventual construction of the convent at that location.

The lighthouse was looking mighty fine in the early morning sun so I had to take a few shots of it.

Desaturated the blue sky and brought out the dark tones of the clouds. The grass was a vibrant green, so I desaturated that as well.

Liked the fence that leads into the buildings.

Cove Point Light Station is the oldest continuously operated lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. Located in Calvert County, Maryland, it's a nice and easy 60 minute jaunt from the D.C. and Baltimore metro areas, and a nice duplex vacation rental property.

The Queenscliff High Light, also variously known as the Black Lighthouse, Fort Queenscliff Lighthouse or Shortland Bluff Light, stands in the grounds of Fort Queenscliff in Queenscliff, Victoria, Australia. It is one of three black lighthouses in the world, and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. Together with the nearby white Queenscliff Low Light, it was built in 1862 to replace the former sandstone lighthouse of 1843.

Erected in 1870, this lighthouse stands on Cape Blanco, Oregon’s farthest west point of land. The Cape Blanco Light Station was put into service in1870, then automated in 1980.

It is one of the few lighthouses that you can climb and see the original lens, which is still operating. See the lens and staircase in the previous two images.

Have a great start to the new week ahead. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the most picturesque lighthouses on the Pacific coast. The tower stands on a rocky promontory and has long been a landmark for ships approaching San Francisco Bay from the south. This headland, and hence the lighthouse, took its name from the ship Carrier Pigeon that wrecked here in 1853. During our visit to the coast, we decided to stop by Pescadero and visit the Pigeon Point lighthouse. The 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in America, has been guiding mariners since 1872.
