Droogdok Jan Blanken - the Dry dock Jan Blanken is a national monument built for the Dutch navy between 1798 and 1822 (architect Jan Blanken) in Hellevoetsluis for the construction and maintenance of ships. Equipped with new techniques such as a pump house (rebuilt in 2001, now a restaurant) with a James Watt steam engine and hundreds of piles were driven into the ground for the dock foundation. The dock has a ship door (type of lock, French invention), and devided in a maintenance and construction section, the walls of which are constructed as an amphitheater to facilitate easy ship maintenance. The naval frigate Euridice was the first ship to be docked.
After the departure of the Dutch Navy until 1970, in operation, completely restored in 2005, and now a museum with the still fully functioning dock for maintenance on ships.

Built in 1911 in Hamburg as the Senator Brockes. Originally it was a lightship, but from 1986 to 1994 the ship was rebuild as a sailing barque. Now a training vessel and a ship offering sailing trips all over the world. More info:

Had a great day out with Joey's cousin JP and his wife Linda who were passing through Rotterdam from Italy on their way home to the US this afternoon. This photo was taken in front of the Lichtschip (light ship), an old museum piece which now hosts a little bar/ restaurant in the Wijnhaven. Later we took the Splash Tours amphibian bus for a little ride around town and through the harbor - one of the things you only do when you have visitors from out of town. It was enjoyable.
At each corner of the urban boulevard to the top of the building, the huge curved expanses of glass open the building to the city, the harbor and the river. Here you can see the lighthouse ship Westhinder.

Op elke hoek van de boulevard naar het dak van het MAS, openen de grote glaspartijen het gebouw naar de stad, de haven en de rivier toe. Het lichtschip Westhinder maakt deel uit van het varend erfgoed dat een plaats krijgt in het Bonapartedok.

Lightship No.11
On October 1, 1991 a severe storm ravaged the lightship "Texel". The chain broke and the light ship was adrift. After failed attempts by helicopter to get people to sell and ship to establish a connection, the light ship stranded in the early morning of Oct. 2 at the Dog Forests sea wall at Petten. Salvage companies did not chance it battered the ship to store. It was decided to demolish lightship spot. The work continued until December 5, 1991. The first week was a visit to the stranded ship a popular excursion. The function of the light ship is stranded for a short time taken by light to the great buoy no.10 ship, already under construction, is included

Lichtschip West-Hinder III. Dit lichtschip, dat behoort tot de collectie van het Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum, ligt in het Bonapartedok.
De West-Hinder III was het laatste werkend lichtschip in de Noordzee en was actief tot in 1994. Het is het enige lichtschip in originele staat in België. Lichtschepen waren een soort vuurtorens op zee, die voor anker lagen in de buurt van zandbanken, ondiepten of andere plaatsen waar ze andere schepen voor moesten waarschuwen.
Het schip werd door de Vlaamse Gemeenschap geschonken aan het Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum in Antwerpen en ligt recht tegenover het MAS
