More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is the headshot of the actress Collette Vollette. This was from my second "Hollywood" headshot session. I was newly minted from USC and my uncle CJ had given me a camera and a lens as a graduation present and said " Stop bitching about waiting tables I tought you photography...go shoot actors"

.

I shot this with a Nikon 6006s a Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200iso. Scanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

This is another one of the images from the 105mm f1.4 lens shoot. The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers. Just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject. Suffice it to say I was the weakest link in the entire project.

When I was asked to shoot the lens I was told I could only have it for 16 days. On my travel schedule during that time fram that meant 11 actual days of being able to shoot. Five of those days were travel days to get from here to there and back.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not inhaled by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the 105mm f1.4.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur. I am by proclivity a zoom guy. For me to say what I am about to say means that one of this brushes will be staying home. This lens has a permeant place in my camera bag.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of the D5- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the 105mm f1.4 I AM: A Super Hero with beautiful Bokeh..

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware (colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds. They are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue I have re-added my "FINAL" version. To MY personal sites. I think the issue really is you don't like my editing. OK. No offense but I do. I sign my name to everything I do. First and last.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, I always list the software and hardware.

This is from my most recent trip to Cuba shooting for my "Turning the Last Page: of 1962" book project. I am working on three books in this series Cuba, Burma and India. Like baseball, boxing and Ballet (that's coming up....) are a religion. The focus and dedication to tperfecting craft is truly a sight to see. To see it up close and through a camera is a rush right up there with flying in a fighter jet. Again as always it is an absolute joy to be shooing in Cuba and shooting in Cuba with the D850.

the imaging pathway is as follows: Lightroom Classic was used as the browser to make selects, then using the open directly plugin for Lightroom the selected file was sent to Nikon Capture NX-D for raw conversion saved as a 16bit tiff in the Prophoto Colorspace. File was then post processed in Photoshop 2018 and the Nik Collection by DxO was used in conjunction with Photoshop to image edit this image.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar.

There are over 500,000 buddha images in this temple. The first time I wain Myanmar I asked what the difference between a temple and a pagoda. It was told it's simple you can walk into a temple. If you walk into a pagoda you will hurt your nose.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. According to Jay Maisel light, gesture and color are three of the four key elements of any image. To create a great chromatic grayscale image you have first create a great color image. I shot this image just after sunrise in Kengtung village market. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens.

There is a neighborhood in Havana called Casablanca, we stopped the cars and I got out and there she was...waiting for me..

I fly in love a 1000 times a day usually for about a 125th of a sec. I don't believe in long relationships or long exposures.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

From my last trip to Cuba....

I love doing "Street walking" photography. Where I see the world at eye level and at the speed of life. It where I can truly experience being taken by the moment and letting them moment of being taken be the cause of clicking the shutter. I make it a point to go to places no one goes to. In every moment of sweeping the street and willing to being open to the gifts that happen at the speed of life you get the best moments. In absolute spontaneity you get absolutions truth. You can only be one way if you are being spontaneous and that's truthful. In those moments there are alway just the right number of notes in your visual symphony.

Keep in mind that the fabrics for the the top ultra bounce system works! She is inside a Sunbounce cage and the reflector is a Sunbounce Pro (I use the sparkling sun reflector fabric). I have a two Lume cubes attached to two of their flash brackets. TYhias is in case I feel I need a tad more light than I have I can turn them on with my phone and dial in the brightness. I am using the Nikon D850 and the 105mm f1.4 for this shoot.

From my most recent (hopefully not my last) trip to Cuba

I was just walking down the street and being taken by a one moment of another beings life, the subject of this image. I was shooting this when a little boy was playing hide and seek and zipped around the corner to see if he was being followed. (the subject of the previous image) He did not see me because he thought I was too busy seeing something else. He took me alrifgt. I slowed down to the peed of life and let him hide in my camera where he took the shot by taking me.

Three thoughts come to mind, things happen at the speed of life, An interesting plains is the moss tdificult thing to achieve. AND never take a picture. Let the moment, that will be the picture, take you.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. For me the pretty is in the blur. The main reason I shoot and have always shot Nikon is quality of the Nikkor lenses. Every lens has beautiful Bokeh. All lenses focus, that's what they do. But it is how a lens handles from in focus to blur that defines the greatness of a lens. This is at f5.6 at 150mm. I shot this image 4;30am and 6:30am in Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens.

I ran out to the water and snapped some quick pics, I ended up with some great longer exposure shots just by pinning the camera down on the dock with one hand and hitting the shutter with the other. Glad it didn't fall in the water.

From my most recent trip to Cuba. Dancers....

The Black and White version, captured with the AMAZING Nikon Z6 and the best piece of glass I have ever shot with the 105mm f1.4 Nikkor.

Thank you Judith Chaffee and Bill Finlay for teaching me how to understand movement and giving me the love of dance.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

This is an image of the Cuban Ballerina Elena. In this shot we were on the roof of a building in central Havana in between rain showers.

The light source was ambient rainy daylight.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I shot this image of Dilara Acar in Moab when I crashed Rolando Gomez's model workshop. I am glad Rolando is a generous man with his time! This image was captured with the D850 and the 105mm f1.4 Nano coated lens. I am working on a a new approach to shooting that Paul Van Allen has dubbed as the "conversational portrait" it has to do with some of things you can now do with the D850 that you can't do with any other camera.

Image was lit using the sun bounce cage and the Sunbounce Pro Shimmering Sun reflector.

File was post processed in Capture NX-D and Photoshop CC2018 was used for some light blemish removal and stray hairs.

Post Cards from the vacation that is my life. the "I have been some remote placeless but....... " section 2011 edition

(three of four images)

I was on assignment for American Photo magazine (back when magazines existed...) This is in a region in Burma that non Burmese (and even then it is strictly limited) can no longer travel to.

This is the thrid shot of the sequence after she gave me the "scary laser stare of death by a tattooed faced woman" and the the one where she looks right through me stares. I look from behind my camera say to her "OH come on....." this last capture is the gift of her smile.

See explaining story below:

There is an old wives tale that the most beautiful women in South east Asia are from Burma specifically from the village I photographed this woman in. So hard core was this belief back in the day that the men of the village took to tattooing the faces of the women so no one would want to steal them. This was done with bamboo needle and ink at 13 years old with out any for of local anesthetic.

To get to this village this village we travelled 11 hours by car one one of the "Burma Super Highways" three hours by boat then 6 hours by car then 7 hour day boat during the monsoon season up the Irrawaddy river. Along the way we had to bail the boat out and head to shot when it dumped rain or we would sink ( this is also where I proved that a Nikon camera can indeed be pelted with 1.7 liters of water per hour....). All I know is that when we FINALLY arrived sat this village I was hell bent on photographing a tattooed face woman. I entered the village and it was completely empty. Only chickens and pigs running around.

As my angst, frustration and concern started to simmer to a boil of "@&$*%(!!" level expletives, I hear, flowing in the air around me, the is beautiful bell/bird song like voice in the most exquisite mix of births and brumes accented English say "Are you looking for me?" I spin around and all there is an empty village. the again I hear flowing in the air around me, the most beautiful voice " I cannot come down because I mail but you may photograph me if you would like to."

I would like to believe that my mother did not have any idiot children I said to my self "look up" and there above me had to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Also keep in mind that the last white man to visit this village must have been during the British occupation. I eventually found my voice and said "yes I traveled here to photograph you" (I had no idea that I had travel here just to photograph this woman but it was as if she was notified via psychic link or carrier pigeon that I was on my way and on "official" American Photographer magazine business. She smiled, giggled a bit, I then lifted up my camera she made this face.

I shot this with the Nikon Z7 and the 70-300mm lens.

The Z system is simply best of class. The quality of the file and the perfection of the color coupled with the new lenses sharpness, just a joy to shoot. Enough with the commercial...

The Color version

I was walking down the street after walking the streets, 12 miles by this point (thank god for the healthcares program on my iPhone I suppose) It was hot, humid, I was hungry and thirsty and done.

I was ASO (All Shot Out)

And then I was taken. I try to create images that put the viewer in the same place the moment I was taken by the moment.

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D500. The lens was 18-300mm "Street Sweeper II" lens.

Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

In the process of doing a little external hard drive clean-up and spring cleaning . ( My rental storage space looks like an old tech show room) I came a cross this file of one of my most favorite people in the world to photograph, Challen Cates. This image was captured with a D1X in in 10MP mode, 50mm at f7.1.

Don't ask me how I got there with is one, this file from the "I know everything in the world, I'll never need to save any work files" era. Sooooo other than Nikon Capture, Photoshop and Nik software were somehow involved.

More from my way back in the day when there was some art and skill involved shooting headshots vs. today where it has evolved to something that is a cross between a passport photo, DMV and a yearbook picture rant.

This is the headshot of the Japanese actress Natsuo.

I shot this with a Nikon F5 Nikkor 70-210Dmm lens, a Westcott Sunlight reflector, and Iford HP5+ rated at 200isoScanned with an Epson V850 and Silverfast software.

I have a very good friend, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer who was a member of Combat camera, Mickey Strand, he would teach his sailors about the need to do "picture stories" it is a habit of his I have picked up. This is a "picture story" of a boy and his ballon.

From the "2_DO" folder collection Cuba section:

There is something about being open to the world around you without an expectation that YOU MUST create EPIC!!! YOU MUST!! I prefer to get up have two cups of coffee and go to some place I have never seen and just be open to where the moment takes me. That to me is is the true essence of street photography. The true essence of photo journalism.. heck photography.just seeing the world at eye level and at the speed of life being taken by the moment and letting them moment of being taken be the cause of clicking the shutter.I was taken by the absolute love of this moment.

Shot with the D750 28-300mm AKA "Street Sweeper" lens. Raw processed in Capture NXD post processed in Photoshop CC with NiK collection software by DxO
