This is from my most recent trip to Myanmar. I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival. This image was captured ioutside a hut that was another two hour drive by 4 wheel drive.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I shot this image 4;30am Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens. This is the image in color.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

This is the first "official" vinniev image of the Nebelung Fur Gremlin , Valentino J. Cat. He is moments away from pouncing on the other Nebelung Fur Gremlin , Gianni J. Cat who is preoccupied chasing a piece of plastic wrap from a gadget I just received from Amazon. The secret to photographic the Nebelung fur gremlin in the wild is to do it whilst they are preoccupied in the constant game of chase the imaginary moving invisible thing that only they can see or during a a game of "death from above or behind or from a hidden spot" with the other fur gremlin.

When was a very young boy my father and I would go to Little Italy (now referred to as REALLY little Itay) in NYC and by cheeses, salami, mortadella etc. a loaf a bread and White Rock Cream Sodas and have a picnic lunch in the park. This is one of the views I remember from one of the "secret" uich spots.

Doing the first level edits today of my latest trip to Cuba. This image was shot with the Nikon Z7 and the the 24-70mm s Series lens. I was just walking by and this car took me. I suppose I registered somewhere that the car was color coordinated to the building. I frequently do not realize what I have actually shot until I am sitting in front of the monitor in the studio. I feel like I have a hand on my back gently pushing forward when I shoot.

I shot this during the Presidio Project with a prototype Nikon D1x and a protype 80-400mm Nikkor lens. The were tearing down an old warehouse to put up some modern marvel that most likely looks like the inside of an old washing machine. It was the time of the dot com KAAABOOM right after the Dot com boom. I was commissioned by th rPresidio Trust to photograph the recently decommissioned San Francisco Presidio. The oldest military base in history. It was commissioned in 1776. I had just finished two gigs one as the Artist in Residence at Altamira Group (the inventors of Genuine Fractals, I was employee number 6) and the other ads the Advisor to the President of Kodak on digital imaging. I was hired by NiK Software (employee number 2) to be the test pilot for their soon to be released version 1 of the software. I was blessed to be offered the chance to photograph a recently minted national recreation area/park (the Presidio). What a far cry living a 1440 acre park in the middle of San Francisco. My studio was still up and running in Los Angeles and I was all over the place. But back to this image I had a two seater convertible at the time and as I was driving back to my house in the Presidio to beat the rain I ran over a nail and got a flat in from t of the image you see here. I shot this whilst waiting for AAA and in the rain. I came back two days later when there was sun (a rare area in SF) and there was no wall left.

There are approximately 95 Naga Tribes in Nagaland. They are a hunter gatherer / slash and burn culture. Up to 1985 they were headhunters and and practiced cannibalism. Which would give me pause if I was told they want me over for lunch. The New year's festival is in part a celebration to comrade the ending of those practices and the embracing of a more spiritual path. This is the warrior Ko Khar Nuu ( San Pya village)

I shot this image of the Shwedagon Pagoda, in Yangon Myanmar, at sunset with a D600 and the 28-300mm lens. It was the first day in Yangon on a workshop I was asked to lead for the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. This was the 141st image from the camera that I had literally received the day before I left for Myanmar. This was the camera that I discovered that from this point forward auto ISO was the wa yto go with street photography. When you are stuck in airports because of weather delays you can either bemoan your fate or you can post process pictures...

Iso here is more of my "Street walking" photography, seeing the world at eye level and at the speed of life.

IIt this case I am photographing a procession of "mini" monks or there morning walk for food from the residence of the village. Buddhist monks are not allowed to handle money and have to be given the gift of food to eat. A monk has three robes. The one he has on, the one he wore yesterday and the one he will tomorrow he washes the other two. In Thailand the monks wear robes dyed with saffron. In Burma the robes are dyed with Jackfruit.

This is an image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book serries titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D5. The lens was 28-300mm "street sweeper" lens. To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontanious none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest linkn the entire project.

This image of Anthony was shot whilst walking through a neighborhood on the outskirts of Havana.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

AI shot this image of the Chrysler Building whilst speaking at Optix. When my father was alive everytime I went to NYC I would try and capture images that were the places he would tell me about his growing up in New York. Finding the past that isstill present today.

This is another image from my most recent trip to PBPW Cuba. The image you are seeing are part of a greater project, a book series titled "Turning the Last Page." The title of the Cuba project is "Cuba: Turning the Last Page of 1962."

The camera was the fabulous Nikon D810. The lens was 105mm f 1.4. Arguably the best lens Nikon has ever made. Certainly the best lens I have ever shot with.

To make sure we are all on the same page, there are always two aspects to every shoot. "The Shoot" itself and the post processing to final art. This image contains both aspects and is the outcome of the post processing this is a copy of that final file.

For "the shoot" aspect of this project no artificial light, no make-up on the subjects by a make-up stylist, in this case just the make-up the dancer chose to put on herself, no reflectors or diffusers all of the images are spontaneous none of the subjects are posed. So what you are seeing is (from the shoot aspect) just the lens. Just the camera. Just the light that was there. Just the subject.

My goal every time I shoot is to be the weakest link in the entire project.

This is an image of the Cuban Ballerina Klavdia. In this image, just like the previous one of the Elena , Klavdia was resting in a small window frame and I was out side on the even smaller balcony shooting towards her, in between rain showers.

The light source was ambient rainy daylight.

When asked what is the best light W. Eugene Smith said "Why the best light is available light and by available light I mean any damn light that is available."..... This approach to lighting Works for me.

I have always held that the lens is the brush, the camera sensor is the canvas. I have also held the that the beauty of a lens is not in how well it handles focus but rather how well it handles from in focus to blur.

There is no image I cannot capture. There is no image in which my vision of the image and the beauty of moment that took me that is not enhanced by the beauty of the glass and lens design of the Nikon system.

This has to be the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is also has the most beautiful Bokeh of any lens I have ever shot with as well.

So you want to know why I choose Nikon? Now you know.

Because of my Nikon camera- I AM: A Super Hero. Because of the Nikkor lenses I AM: A Super Hero with tack sharpnes at point of focus and beautiful Bokeh every place else in the image.

NOTE: I do indeed use Photoshop. It's true. Have been since version 1. when it fit on a single floppy disc. Most inspired piece of software ever written. I was employee number 2 of Niksoftware ( Colorefex, SilverEfex) and employee number 6 of Altamira Group (the inventor of Genuine Fractals) so yes I do also use plug-ins. So if you are viewing an image (unless otherwise noted) on my personal pages, website and sundry feeds they are all post processed if I put them up.

To be very crystal clear ALL of my images that I post on my personal web feeds are post processed.

So that this non issue is no issue these are my "FINAL" versions on my PERSONAL sites. Because it is my personal page I do reserve the right to delete comments from angry photographic charlatan internet trolls.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

I traveled 36 hours of flying (not including layovers) then 16 hours by 4 wheel drive to travel 58 miles in to the mountains of Nagaland to attend the New Years festival.

I shot this the day before in Yangon at a local market.

This from my most recent trip to Myanmar. Soooo.... I shot this in Yangon just before r my journey to the outskirts of the absolute middle of nowhere. I have a series of exercises I run myself through before I enter "the hair ball" of a week long + street photography assignment. I do them to blow the rust out of the pipes so to speak. This is part of my defined area exercise. I pick four corners in a given space and then see how many usable images I can shoot in that area in a set period of time.

In a 10 day period I flew to SaltLake City, drove to Yellowstone, drove to Jackson Hole Wyoming, then to Moab then back to Salt Lake City then back to Moab then back to Salt lake City then flew to Los Angeles. I drove 2264 miles and spent 23 hours in a car. After that juggernaught I had a 21 hour turn around and flew to New York city for 7 days then back to Los Angeles (9 hour turn around and flew to Maine for a week.

I shot this image whilst on assignment for American Photo Magazine to shoot and write an article about the opening up of Myanmar. I have no idea where this is, other than somewhere between here and there in Myanmar. The big issue, at least for me when on assignment is you stop producing "product" when the editor or art director says "we're good" there are always more images that are great but do not fit the direction of the story and there is just so many hours in a day, and when you get "it's a wrap" you are off to the next gig. It's nice to take pause and se what is there that you saw but did not "see" for the purpose of the story.. D3x and the 24-120mm lens. This is the image in Chromatic Grayscale.

This is another from the review process of my server and and trying get to all the files I have decided to work on during the first edit but have never gotten to. Usually the amount of time I have to do any post on a gig is the flight back home and maybe there days after I hit stateside before the next adventure takes me. I decided to take this summer to try and catch up on images I have always wanted to process.

This is an image of the News Building that I shot through the glass on my one and only day. off (so far) from the Feature film shoot I am the Stills/Set photographer for, Pinball.

I shot this whilst spending the day with Jimmy AtoZ (my new associate photographer in my classes) and Aymen Siam, who I mentor as part of the NYSalt program. Jimmy is a NYC native and well took me to some of the echo of New York places I only occasionally stumble upon. I call this the "dailey Planet" 'cuz everyone knows Gotham City is Ian NewellYork City...Sheeesh

I was walking down the street after walking the streets, 12 miles by this point (thank god for the healthcares program on my iPhone I suppose) It was hot, humid, I was hungry and thirsty and done.

I was ASO (All Shot Out)

This is image was capture during the first trip to Moab. It was a new moon, so the Milky Way was visible at 3:30am.

SERVER TRAVELING : The Fine Art of Time Travel

This is a misplaced image. It was processed to be worked on. But wound up in a folder labeled

FLOWERS_MAYBE_2_DO. I do remember freezing my ass off being rained on and it was one those rare moments at tunnel view where no one was there because they were shiner than I was. There was a brief moment of a break in the clouds. the sun hit the water fall and then the water really fell from the sky. I was complaining to my self at the the time. I can promise you I will never complain again . I sooooo look forward to being able to be somewhere else as I am sure we all do than the post stamp of a piece of land that is my current lil'slice of heaven.

I shot this image between 4;30am and 6:30am in Nyaung Chaungtha along the Irrawadddy river. The plan was to travel up river during monsoon season to a remote village. The trip took three days. D3 auto Iso and the 28-300mm lens.

I was on assignment for American Photo magazine (back when magazines existed...) This is in a region in Burma that non Burmese (and even then it is strictly limited) can no longer travel to.

There is an old wives tale that the most beautiful women in South east Asia are from Burma specifically from the village I photographed this woman in. So hard core was this belief back in the day that the men of the village took to tattooing the faces of the women so no one would want to steal them. This was done with bamboo needle and ink at 13 years old with out any for of local anesthetic.

To get to this village this village we travelled 11 hours by car one one of the "Burma Super Highways" three hours by boat then 6 hours by car then 7 hour day boat during the monsoon season up the Irrawaddy river. Along the way we had to bail the boat out and head to shot when it dumped rain or we would sink ( this is also where I proved that a Nikon camera can indeed be pelted with 1.7 liters of water per hour....). All I know is that when we FINALLY arrived sat this village I was hell bent on photographing a tattooed face woman. I entered the village and it was completely empty. Only chickens and pigs running around.

As my angst, frustration and concern started to simmer to a boil of "@&$*%(!!" level expletives, I hear, flowing in the air around me, the is beautiful bell/bird song like voice in the most exquisite mix of births and brumes accented English say "Are you looking for me?" I spin around and all there is an empty village. the again I hear flowing in the air around me, the most beautiful voice " I cannot come down because I mail but you may photograph me if you would like to."

I would like to believe that my mother did not have any idiot children I said to my self "look up" and there above me had to be one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Stopped me dead in my tracks. Also keep in mind that the last white man to visit this village must have been during the British occupation. I eventually found my voice and said "yes I traveled here to photograph you" (I had no idea that I had travel here just to photograph this woman but it was as if she was notified via psychic link or carrier pigeon that I was on my way and on "official" American Photographer magazine business. She smiled, giggled a bit, I then lifted up my camera she made this face.

My father was a New Yorker. I would every chance I could when ever I was in his city to capture images of the moments from the stories he would tell me about growing up in New York City. He passed away 10 years ago, I still love finding the echoes of hs memories.

I always make it a point, If you read the full description of any of my images, to always list the software and hardware used to produce an image.

Nikon Df camera,105mm f1.4 lens. Recorded to Lexarmedia Raw conversion done in Capture NX-D. converted to a 16bit Prohoto colorspace .TIFF. Further post processing Photoshop CC 2017, Nik collection by Google, oNonesoftware ver.10.5. Wacom Cintiq 27QHD, Benq SW2700 monitor (for approval color)

CATS!!!

This is from my latest trip to Cuba. I admit it I am a cat lady. I shot this with thew 50mm 1.8 S series lens. A lens that truly blew me away. To be honest I have alway viewed a 50mm lens as an optical lens cap. I have learned the error of my ways. This is a breathtaking star lens with beautiful bokeh.

DANCERS!!!

I love photographing dancers, especially Cuban Ballet Dancers. Ahora Pregunto y le Digo in natural light during practice for "the Nutcracker." This is from my latest trip to Cuba.

I shot this with the brand new Nikon Z50 50-250mm DX S lens. I decided to shoot all but one day exclusively with this camera in a real world situation, and nothing is more "real World" than doing street photography on the streets of Havana.
