Despite investing over $647.1 billion in Afghanistan over the past decade, insecurity and terrorism continue to plague the country. Specialists at the World Organization for Resource Development and Education (WORDE) argue that effective civil society engagement is the missing piece towards securing Afghanistan's future. Please join us for the launch of the WORDE report, "Afghanistan 2014 and Beyond: The Role of Civil Society in Peacebuilding and Countering Violent Extremism." Hosted by Dr. Robert D. Lamb of CSIS, the panel features the report's authors, as well as special guest, General John R. Allen (U.S. Margine Corps, Ret.), who recently served as the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and U.S. Forces, Afghanistan (USFOR-A) to share his perspectives on engaging Afghan civil society following the 2014 troop withdrawal.

Shooting a memory.

This started as an exercise in leveraging OPA to tell my own visual story. An object of strong sentimental value that I have is an older-than-me, solid cast aluminum model of a sailplane that I inherited from my father. As I was considering how I wanted to shoot it, I had a vivid recollection of an incident from my youth, when I flew sailplanes like this myself.

This was back when I was in high-school, well over 50-years ago now. The incident occurred shortly after my first solo flight, when I was still very inexperienced. I was soaring a thermal near cloud-base, and watching the ground slowly vanish below me, when I encountered another sailplane pilot with the same idea, and no more sense.

This studio setup is using the model of a Schweizer 1-23D, similar to the one that I was flying at the time. I don't often do high-key stuff, but I usually like the result when others do. IMO; just because the camera uses reality, doesn’t mean that the image has to be reality. It's all about the visual story.

Please do not post notes on the image.

When my Son, Joey was 17 years old and a senior in Lowell Voke school I found this real neat 34 behind an old garage in Nashua, N.H. I learned from the elderly garage owner that it was dropped off in the late 60's for a tune up , but the owner never returned to pick it up and so it wouldn't get ruined outside the garageman parked it in an old 4 stall garage shedd with open front, thats how I spotted it when I towed one of his customers cars to drop it out back of his workshop. I of course asked if it was for sale and he told me that he preferred that I locate the owner all he had was his name, so tried info in the Nashua area but no luck, the operator asked if I wanted a state wide search and sure enough that name popped up in Newmarket, N.H. I called and an older man answered and when asked if this car was his he couldn't believe it was still there ! I asked if it was for sale and he said he would if I would assume all storage charges. he set the price at $2000.00 and I gladly paid it hoping the storage charge would not be to high !.. He went on to tell me that he had driven the car from Calf. in the late 50's having the Ford Garage install a 3:54 ratio ring and pinion and a factory 100 H.P. 59a engine for the long trip. He also had the original Calf. Title..... So then it was off back to the garage in Nashua to get the bad news about the storage. I told him I made the deal on the car and showed him the paperwork to prove it, So he said lets go over to my desk and figure this out... It took this old pencil that he kept over his ear and started to put some figures down, every once in a while he would look up at me and say OH! I forgot about that and when he finished he looked up and said, Young fella here's the bad news and handed me the slip of paper. I looked at it in the dimly lit old garage and I was afraid to say the number I saw.. so I said I couldn't make it out.. he said G D it can't you read it says 175.00 dollars, HOLY SHIT I thought I was in the twilight show !! I towed it home and could not believe how solid it was. The engine was really stuck so I tried an old trick of mine , I used a 1 inch hole saw and drilled on the side of the bell housing just above the ring gear so I could use a long bar on the flywheel teeth to give some good leverage, So with the spark plugs out and a belly full of penetrating oil on the pistons I gently started to move the crank back and forth until I got a full revolution and when it was all over that little flathead purred like a kitten , So a set of big and little tires on 16 inch wires it became my son's summer ride.... Good Memories to say the least !!!

It is rather handy that the oil filter is located at the top of the engine. Makes maintenance rather easy. An old bicycle handlebar gives extra leverage.

A 19th century Puck illustration of a banker gathering the skyscrapers of Manhattan into his arms. It has been altered. The banker's skin has been tinted brick red, his eyes tinted yellow, and he's been given horns. The sky has been replaced with a halftone scene of storm-clouds, and the ground has been replaced with a washed-out wasteland. His gold cufflink has been made to glitter.
