Colorado Springs, CO - I enjoy heading off to the track and taking action shots of the local riders, it is my way of stress relief.

Besides, it helps to practice all types of photography. Fast action is by far my favorite and most challenging.

1st Row:

Smiley - A comedian who uses his humour and contagious laughter to distract LC when committing crime. He also manifests comedy props which he can use as weaponry.

Harleyween - A Halloween themed villainess that jump scares LC and attempts to attack him with her fiery glider and dual katanas.

2nd Row:

Armoury - A walking tank with better armour and weaponry than LC. He provides a constant challenge and is very hard to overcome for the hero.

Benom- LC from an alternate universe where he is bonded to the Symbiote Venom. He now tries to take over our version of Earth using his powers.

3rd Row:

Wild - A rage inducing villain who tries to make LC lose his temper and focus due to the hero being levelheaded and calm. He also has super strength and durability.

Astro - A Villain who can warp the reality around him into resembling the emptiness of space and manipulate the gravity in the area. This confuses LC and distracts him.

Big trips like this are particularly challenging for me when it comes to the Project 365. The sheer quantity of images captured combined with so many great memories make it feel almost impossible to select only one!

That said, dedicating our third day at Disneyland to this marvel of a human being was easy, for myriad reasons. The least of which is the fact that the whole trip wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for her, from idea through making it happen. Beyond that, and the list goes on and on, the most well-rounded, levelheaded, loving, caring, and engaging mother that two great kids could dream of having. And last but not least by any means, the best partner, friend, and a thousand other things I could list, to me.

Holly, we’re so very fortunate to get to share this life with you 😊

I was trying to capture his mood while he was deeply contemplating in his small and peaceful courtyard.

2/365 Nailed it! Joe looks very levelheaded here :-)

All our dogs were able to achieve some level of "airplane ears", these are pretty good.

OK, what the hell, I'll give my best shot at a 365-photo project for the new year.

Blondie is an American comic strip created by cartoonist Chic Young. Distributed by King Features Syndicate, the strip has been published in newspapers since September 8, 1930. The success of the strip, which features the eponymous blonde and her sandwich-loving husband, led to the long-running Blondie film series (1938–1950) and the popular Blondie radio program (1939–1950).

Chic Young drew Blondie until his death in 1973, when creative control passed to his son Dean Young, who continues to write the strip. Young has collaborated with a number of artists on Blondie, including Jim Raymond, Mike Gersher, Stan Drake, Denis Lebrun, and John Marshall. Through these changes, Blondie has remained popular, appearing in more than 2,000 newspapers in 47 countries and has been translated into 35 languages. Since 2006, Blondie has also been available via email through King Features' DailyINK service.

Overview

Originally designed to follow in the footsteps of Young's earlier "pretty girl" creations Beautiful Bab and Dumb Dora, Blondie focused on the adventures of Blondie Boopadoop—a carefree flapper girl who spent her days in dance halls. The name "Boopadoop" derives from the scat singing lyric that was popularized by Helen Kane's 1928 song "I Wanna Be Loved by You."

Marriage

On February 17, 1933, after much fanfare and build-up, Blondie Boopadoop marries her boyfriend Dagwood Bumstead, the son of a wealthy industrialist. The marriage was a significant media event, given the comic strip's popularity.[3] Dagwood's upper-crust parents strongly disapprove of his marrying beneath his class, and disinherit him. The check Dagwood uses to pay for his honeymoon bounces, and the Bumsteads are forced to become a middle-class suburban family. The catalog for the University of Florida's 2005 exhibition, "75 Years of Blondie, 1930–2005", notes:

Blondie's marriage marked the beginning of a change in her personality. From that point forward, she gradually assumed her position as the sensible head of the Bumstead household. And Dagwood, who previously had been cast in the role of straight man to Blondie's comic antics, took over as the comic strip's clown.

Setting

"Dagwood Bumstead and family, including Daisy and the pups, live in the suburbs of Joplin, Missouri," according to the August 1946 issue of The Joplin Globe, citing Chic Young.

Cast of characters

Blondie Bumstead (née Boopadoop): The eponymous leading lady of the comic strip. Blondie is a smart, sweet, and responsible woman. She can be stressed at times when raising her family and because of Dagwood's antics, and despite being usually laid-back and patient, Blondie does get upset sometimes. She is also extremely beautiful with gold hair, gentle curls, and a shapely figure. A friend once told Dagwood that Blondie looked like a 'million bucks'. In 1991, she began a catering business with her neighbor, Tootsie.

Dagwood Bumstead: Blondie's husband. A kind yet naïve man whose cartoonish antics are the basis for the strip. He is a big fan of football and has a large, insatiable appetite for food (but he remains slender). Dagwood is especially fond of making and eating the mile-high Dagwood sandwich. He celebrates even the most insignificant holidays, and approaches Thanksgiving (a holiday known for lavish dinners) with the same reverence most people reserve for Christmas. His continuous antagonistic and comical confrontations with his boss Mr. Dithers, for numerous reasons including Dagwood's laziness and silly mistakes, is a subplot that gets considerable attention in the strip. Another subplot deals with Dagwood and his neighbor Herb. He can also often be seen napping on his couch.

Alexander Bumstead: the elder child of Blondie and Dagwood who is in his late teens, formerly referred to by his pet name "Baby Dumpling". As a child, he was very mischievous and precocious. As a teenager, he is athletic, levelheaded and intelligent. Despite resembling his father, he is more down-to-earth like his mother.

Cookie Bumstead: the younger child of Blondie and Dagwood who is in her early teens. Cookie is portrayed as a teenage girl whose interests include dating, hanging out with friends, and clothes. Her appearance has changed the most compared to the other characters, as a child (1940s-late 1950s) she originally had long curly hair with a black bow holding a long curl on the top of her head, as a young teen (late 1950s-1960s) she wore her hair in a ponytail with curly bangs, as an older teen (1970s-1990s) she wore her hair long with a black headband and later (2000s) dropped the hair band and wore her hair with bangs, barretes and flipped to the sides. Her current hairstyle is long with bangs and flipped at sides.

Daisy: The Bumsteads' family dog whose best friend is Dagwood and who frequently changes her expression in response to Dagwood's comments or other activities. She, in the later years of the comic, gave birth to puppies.

Mr. Beasley the Postman: The Bumsteads' mailman who Dagwood seems to always collide with and knock down as Dagwood hurriedly leaves the house.

Mr. Julius Caesar Dithers: Founder of the J.C. Dithers Construction Company and Dagwood's boss. He dictates to his employees and believes the best thing in life is money. Although it usually does not seem like it at the workplace, Mr. Dithers still is a good-hearted man.

Mrs. Cora Dithers: Mr. Dithers' wife. She usually gets into fights with him as she exerts control of her husband. She is great friends with Blondie.

Herb Woodley: Dagwood's best friend and next-door neighbor.

Tootsie Woodley: Herb's wife and Blondie's best friend. Tootsie and Blondie can empathize with one another as women, mothers, and particularly as spouses of eccentric husbands. In 1991, she joined Blondie in starting a catering business.

Elmo Tuttle: A kid in the neighborhood who has a friendship with Dagwood (whom he calls "Mr. B"), but sometimes annoys him. His last name was originally "Fiffenhauser."

Lou the Diner Counterman: The owner and cook of Lou's Diner, where Dagwood goes on lunch hours. Dagwood sometimes suggests new specials for the diner. Lou is covered with tattoos and always has a toothpick in his mouth.

Claudia and Dwitzell: The carpoolers with Dagwood and Herb. Claudia is a lawyer; no occupation has been identified for Dwitzell, sometimes called "Dwitz".

The Bumstead family has grown, with the addition of a son named Alexander (originally "Baby Dumpling") on April 15, 1934, a daughter named Cookie on April 11, 1941, a dog, Daisy, and her litter of five unnamed pups. In the 1960s, Cookie and Alexander grew into teenagers (who uncannily resemble their parents), but they stopped growing during the 1960s when Young realized that they had to remain teenagers to maintain the family situation structured into the strip for so many decades.

Dagwood is the office manager at the office of the J. C. Dithers Construction Company under his dictatorial boss—Julius Caesar Dithers. Mr. Dithers is a "sawed-off, tin pot Napoleon" who is always abusing his employees, both verbally and physically. He frequently threatens to fire Dagwood when Dagwood inevitably botches or does not finish his work, sleeps on the job, comes in late, or pesters Dithers for a raise. Dithers characteristically responds by kicking Dagwood in the backside and ordering him back to work. The tyrannical Dithers is lord and master over all he surveys, with one notable exception—his formidable and domineering wife, Cora.

Blondie and Dagwood's best friends are their next-door neighbors Herb and Tootsie Woodley, although Dagwood and Herb's friendship is frequently volatile. Lou is the burly, tattooed owner of Lou's Diner, the less-than-five-star establishment where Dagwood often eats during his lunch hour. Other regular supporting characters include the long-suffering mailman, Mr. Beasley; Elmo Tuttle, a pesky neighborhood kid who often asks Dagwood to play; and a never-ending parade of overbearing door-to-door salesmen.

Running gags

Dagwood has created a typical Dagwood sandwich in this April 17, 2007 strip.

There are several running gags in Blondie, reflecting the trend after Chic Young's death for the strip to focus almost entirely on Dagwood as the lead character:

Dagwood often collides with Mr. Beasley the mailman while running out the front door—late for work.

Other variations of the late-for-work gag: Dagwood keeping his car pool waiting, running after their car or stuck in traffic. In earlier decades, he had been late for the bus or, even earlier in the strip's run, late for the streetcar.

The famous, impossibly tall sandwiches Dagwood fixes for himself, which came to be known colloquially as the "Dagwood sandwich".

Dagwood in his pajamas, having a midnight snack—with most of the refrigerator contents spread out on the kitchen table, (or balanced precariously on his extended arms, on the way to the table.)

Dagwood's propensity to nap on the couch during the day, often interrupted by Elmo, who wants to ask him a question; or Blondie, who has a chore she wants him to do.

Dagwood singing in the bathtub, or interrupted (usually by family members or Elmo) while he's trying to relax in the tub.

Dagwood contends with brazen or obnoxious salesmen at his door, selling undesirable or impossible-looking items.

A variation of the above has the salesmen calling on the telephone.

Dagwood and Herb Woodley spending some weekend time together, which usually escalates into a brawl.

Dagwood demanding a raise from Dithers and failing to get it every time.

Dagwood caught goofing off or sleeping at his desk in the office.

Mr. Dithers firing Dagwood for being incompetent or physically booting him out of his office.

Dagwood getting a menu suggestion from Lou, the wry, blunt, and/or sarcastic diner counterman.

The Christmas shopping gag, where Dagwood is shown carrying Christmas packages that completely cover up his face and upper body.

Herb borrowing small items—tools, small appliances, books, and (more recently) videos—from Dagwood, then never returning them. Occasionally, Herb will loan a borrowed item to a third party, which is then usually passed on to a fourth or fifth party, etc.[7]

Dagwood's hobby is household carpentry, but unfortunately his projects don't turn out well. Once, he built a small cabinet for Blondie, actually accomplishing all construction steps perfectly; but the result still fails because it doesn't fit in the space Blondie intended for it. Mostly, he is producing sawdust.

Colonel Potterby and the Duchess

From 1935 to 1963, Young also drew a topper, Colonel Potterby and the Duchess, a pantomime strip displayed beneath Blondie each Sunday.

day 29

somehow, my best friend knows exactly what to say to me at all times. somehow, we connect. somehow, she gets me down to the tee.

somehow, we are incredibly different. we each have our own thoughts, and our own lives, and our own experiences.

somehow, i feel like god knew that i would need her someday. someone sane to keep me calm. someone optimistic to keep me levelheaded. someone to use her words to soothe my anxiousness. someone to be strong when i don’t really understand why things are happening. i can’t really thank him enough for her.

rachel, i love you.

you guys, a change is happening. something good. i'm getting out of my rut. &i can thank this girl^^ for that.

(H00DRAT WEEK. BE A H00DRAT)

How many disasters have been averted because one person refused to buckle under the strain? It’s this kind of composure Paul is summoning when he says, “Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:5-6).

The Greek word translated here as “gentleness” describes a temperament that’s seasoned and mature. It envisions an attitude fitting to the occasion, levelheaded and tempered. This gentleness is “evident to all.” Family members take note. Your friends sense a difference. Coworkers benefit from it.

The gentle person is sober minded and clear thinking. The contagiously calm person is the one who reminds others, “God is in control.” Pursue this gentleness. The Lord is near—you are not alone. You may feel alone. You may think you’re alone. But there is never a moment in which you face life without help. God is near—be anxious for nothing!

Anxious for Nothing: Finding Calm in a Chaotic World-Max Lucado

When you feel as if things are spiraling out of control, its time to just stop, breathe and "keep a level head"

Something a bit different for me today. Maybe a little Grungy

no matter how many friends have said to me: don't go

no matter how suprising, confusing they are

no matter how many travel agents have already cancelled or postponed the US group tours.

no matter how serious the flu sounds on Chinese media

I'm stubborn, I'm still leaving.

NEXT SATURDAY.

(I'm pretty levelheaded, just the atmosphere is driving me insane.)

...but it's not what I wanted, let me explain

In case you haven't noticed but the birth of my daughter has drastically changed my personal and photographic lives. It has been quite some time since I've been able to designate a few spare hours to get out and shoot some landscapes - the one hobby that I really enjoy. Well last night was the first time that I've been able to negotiate, using Father's Day as leverage, an evening away from my wife and daughter....

My first stop of the evening was in University City looking back East at the skyline as the sun set behind me. I didn't expect that I'd get anything more than what you're looking at, which is a typical skyline photo, so I was really anticipating the second stop of the evening. I had planned on shooting Franklin Square which is a Center City park that contains a carousel and fountain - perfect for long exposures!!

I was psyched to get there and the conditions seemed perfect but within seconds of arriving and setting up my tripod an overzealous security guard approached me stating that photography was not permitted in the park.

Huh, serious???

Ok, I tried to keep my cool, but this guy was pretty combative and he didn't seem to have a clear explanation as to why I couldn't shoot so I asked to speak with someone more levelheaded. So he and I walked over to the park office and after having a brief discussion with his supervisor, I was given permission to take some pictures...Whew! that was rather stressful but now I can get down to business or could I.....

A few minutes later I had set my gear up and just as I release the shutter the same security guard starts attacking me again. He demands that I stop shooting or else he'll call the police...I say, "What do you mean, your supervisor just told me I could shoot" ...He says, "Oh no he didn't!"

Ok, this guy is just downright crazy and a little bit scary too. I heard one thing and he heard the complete opposite....so I calmly suggest that we go and speak with his supervisor again and after doing so I'm given permission to shoot...cough...cough...AGAIN!

However, by this time I'm pretty troubled by the insanity of this security guard so I decide to get the hell out of dodge. Needless to say, who knows when I'll be able to get out and shoot again...some Father's day gift that was!

Anyway, this is the only shot that I'm left with so I hope that you like it

THE COMPLETE JANE AUSTEN: Sense and Sensibility

Premieres Sunday, March 30, 2008 at 9pm on PBS

Hattie Morahan (The Golden Compass) plays levelheaded Elinor Dashwood and Charity Wakefield (Jane Eyre) is her impulsive sister Marianne. Though poor, they attract a trio of very promising gentlemen: soon-to-be wealthy Edward Ferrars (Dan Stevens, The Line of Beauty), heroic Colonel Brandon (David Morrissey, State of Play), and Byronic John Willoughby (Dominic Cooper, The History Boys). Shown: Hattie Morahan as Elinor Dashwood

BOX DATE: 2004

MANUFACTURER: Mattel

DOLLS IN PACK: Stacie, Janet, Miranda

BODY TYPE: 2000; molded flower panties; straight, non-bending legs

HEAD MOLD: 2004 "Wee 3 Friends"

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: This lovely girl is the one that got us into Wee 3 Friends. We saw this pack shortly after it hit shelves in our area, in 2004 or 2005. We didn't know it was coming out, so it was a surprise. I was the sibling more interested in Stacie, but also pickier about new releases. I denounced these dolls as "not really Stacie" rather than letting myself be excited. But we thought they were cute and talked about how this doll looked kind of like Shelly's clone doll named Jade. The original Jade was a clone doll Shelly had in 2002, bought for her by Memere because she came with this great school bus that Shelly wanted to use for Kelly. We're pretty sure clone doll Jade existed in our dolly world before we had Bratz Jade! Our Jade character was our Becky doll's (School Photographer or Share a Smile) sister. A lot of members of our dolly family swapped sides--sometimes they were Leroy's (Water Jewel Magic Aladdin) siblings, other times Jasmine's siblings. However, Becky was almost always from Leroy's side of the combined family and Jade, with her red hair, was perfect to be her biological sister--which meant she was usually Leroy's sister as well. Jade was kooky and always had schemes. She was sarcastic, like older sister Becky. Her best friend Sarah, a blonde clone from a similar school bus set, was more levelheaded. The two followed Becky around a lot and liked to order sushi for some reason. Shelly and I thought Miranda here would be the perfect replacement for Jade--a Mattel doll of durable quality, but with similar age/appearance to the clone. Basically, she and the Stacie she came with could take place of Jade and Sarah. This doll embodied Jade so well--a cute redhead who could pass for eleven or twelve. Her outfit has an Asian influence, which fit Jade's personality like it was meant to be. Stacie, with her innocent looks and kinky hair, was the perfect Sarah. While I find the Janets to be better looking, Stacie alias Sarah and Miranda alias Jade are my favorite Wee 3 Friends dolls. They represent themselves--dolls from a fun time when other brands were clearly taking inspiration from Bratz and cute dolls sold in three packs--but also the clones they replaced. I especially feel reminiscent for Jade. I'm really glad we didn't get rid of our childhood Wee 3 Friends in 2011, when we were just getting back into dolls. They are a part of our history and collection.

202/366 - Paul is a friend who lives north of us. He's one of the most levelheaded people I know, and seems to have the ability to remain calm under any circumstance.

Shown: Hattie Morahan as Elinor Dashwood and Dan Stevens as Edward Ferrars.

BOX DATE: 2004

MANUFACTURER: Mattel

DOLLS IN PACK: Stacie, Janet, Miranda

BODY TYPE: 2000; molded flower panties; straight, non-bending legs

HEAD MOLD: 2004 "Wee 3 Friends"

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister:Shelly remarked that this is, to her, the most sentimental of our Wee 3 Friends dolls, and I must say I agree. While Janet from this set is adorable and I'm mightily fond of Miranda, I think I feel the most warm and fuzzy toward this girl, who we named Sarah. Let me back up a bit: Shelly had these two clone dolls who were sold with little school bus sets that she used for her Kelly dolls. The redhead we called Jade--Shelly got her first and she played Becky's sister. The blonde was her friend Sarah. The original Jade and Sarah were on the scene sometime in 2002. Later, in 2004 or 2005, Shelly bought this Party! Party! Party! set because we thought it was really cute and we thought this Stacie and the Miranda would make the perfect, higher quality replacements for the original Jade and Sarah. To me, this doll will always be Sarah and she fits the bill perfectly. Shelly thought the Splash! Splash! Splash! doll we got a bit later looked more like her ideal of Sarah, but I always thought this girl did because of her fluffy white-blonde hair. She has a very pale look to her because she isn't tan like the beach doll and her hair is so white--plus, her make-up/face paint isn't the most vibrant. She has such an innocent look. Sarah was the more levelheaded, rational of the Jade/Sarah partnership. The two of them had a lot of really great adventures and ate unusual, exotic food--like sushi. This Sarah's innocent expression matches Jade's more demure partner in crime to a tee. She's definitely a beloved member of the family and I'm so glad we didn't get rid of her--we nearly got rid of the Wee 3 Friends in 2011 when we were just getting back into doll collecting. I'm so glad that didn't happen. The original clone dolls have been gone for a long time (the plastic made Shelly feel sick), so this updated Jade and Sarah not only represent themselves, but their predecessors in our doll games. They are a fond reminder of so many of our 2002-2005 storylines and characters.

My name is Halley. My middle name is Alexa, but I like to keep that a secret for the adventurous souls who want to take a guess at it. I have always—like anyone—found it difficult to encompass myself in a few short sentences, but—like anyone—I find it exhilarating to try. I appreciate puns. I appreciate people who appreciate puns even more though, because people are always better than anything that one sees on this earth. Tight schedules put me on edge. I enjoy hotels. It unsettles me that people seem to think I know what I want to do when I graduate. I think "unsettle" is a good word. I have a scar on my nose that someone once thought was a piece of spaghetti. Rain is my breath. I need it; I need the sound of thousands of droplets splashing to the ground, and the smell of a storm on the wind. Falling asleep to thunderstorms fills me. Rain is like oxygen, in that when you hold your breath—or climb to a place thin of air—it is always when you take a deep breath that you realize just what you were missing; just what kept you going. I avoid conflict with every part of me, and I try to make people happy. I'll be honest, I am no good at it, but I try. A pen flowing across paper and a head full of thought together is one of my favorite combinations of anything ever. I enjoy fruit smoothies, and people think I am strange for eating french fries with my milkshakes. But I don't mind, because weirdness is something I value. I write best when I am sleep-deprived. Words mean a lot more to me when they're written. I hate dropping my toothbrush into the sink, and I wash my hair with baking soda. I like late night car rides and mellow music and an expanse of stars in the darkness. But what I really love is a place I've never been. I sometimes try to be cool, but really coolness is just what people genuinely are. I get chills every time I hear a flute. I say "I" too much and I'm bad at being generous, but I do not find it difficult to see things from the perspective of others, which allows me to listen well. I am a night owl. People often think I am at least two years older than I am. I am wretched at encouraging and giving advice about specific situations, but I can easily see beauty in people and draw it out to make them aware of their value. I have slight OCD tendencies. If I could, I would wear jeans all year round. I want to see the ocean again. I have eyes that look like chocolate, but honey when I look into the sun. Every time I take any sort of personality test, the results are uncannily even. Maybe I'm really levelheaded with every emotion. Or maybe I'm just that average. I can't sleep without a blanket over me. I can't sleep with socks on. I enjoy strawberries and fresh pineapple considerably more than any other fruit. I bruise easily and I over-analyze things. I'm a city girl, but the countryside is what I was made for. I don't enjoy mainstream music, and perversion frustrates me. Accents (particularly those of the UK) are one of my favorite things. I love to watch water fall through air, and the smell of my family's laundry detergent refreshes me. I have dreadfully sensitive eyes, so I don't just cry when others cry; my eyes well up when people talk about eyes watering—much like a yawn—or about eyes drying up, or anytime someone's eye is red or they blow their nose. People always suspect me in the game of Mafia because I am the quiet one. I don't enjoy Mafia or anything that is fend-for-yourself competitive. I make notes on my inner wrist to remind myself of things I've learned. I admire honest people. I have always wanted to ride a train. When I get going, I write too much. I think this large description makes up for the small photo.

I am nothing and Jesus is all.

Inspired by this and this and Marshay.

Shown: Dominic Cooper as Willoughby

was born September 5, 1920. He died May 16, 2008, and his funeral was May 23, 2008. He was 87.

I'm not, like, overly depressed or sad about it, mostly because I knew it was coming sooner rather than later. I mean, he had been sick since I was like twelve. After two stints in rehabilitation centers (after strokes, complications, and the lot) and after being essentially bedridden since around mid-2007, I knew it was only a matter of time before he just said "eff it" and went into the light.

Even as death had his number on speeddial, he did not compromise his values, persona or anything like that. He was still an honorable, kindhearted (albeit stubborn at times), joking (some of which were rather raunchy), levelheaded, pretty chill man that got to go out on his own accord. He wanted to die in his own home, not some government-operated piece of crap that only speeds up the process because they need the bed for someone else (in other words, a nursing home).

I was still up College Park when it happened. My father, basically, forced my mom to keep it from me until I got back home from finals, et al. Good strategy, because with my own medical conditions, having a dead daddy on the side? Eh...not good. Obviously, when I found out on the 21th (after I came back home), I was irate, as most people would be. And, I was a bit sad, especially when my mom pulls out these two boxes full of my father's army medals, Masonic pendants and all that type of stuff. But, I was honored that he left all of it to me. I mean, he could have went decked-the-eff-out to see St. Peter and Jesus, but my father was on that whole "can't take it with you" tip, which makes so much sense.

...Well, I'mma stop gushing about my daddy and get back to being the cynic that most of you know me as.

[By the way, the photo in this picture, it was taken of my father when he was about 21-22 years old]

Today, we had the chance to ask some questions to Karell Ste-Marie, Crafter from Québec, Canada who make all kind of gorgeous projects from recycled wooden pallets. If you think you deserve to be featured in the next interview, please, drop us an email.

Tell us a little more about you? Who you are? Where are you from?

My name is Karell, I’m from Quebec, Canada – I co-founded a software company in 1999, sold it in 2015 and today am an executive of that company.

Why do you craft?

I have always been a crafter, I’ve been crafting software for more than 25 years. I wanted to have a hobby where I could craft outside of computers. I’ve created several items from chainmail the biggest being a chainmail shirt, I’ve also made several necklaces using Byzantine weaves.

How did you learn to do wood crafts?

I am mostly self-taught. A few of my friends in construction gave me guidance. The rest I have learned from YouTube and trial/error.

How long have you been working with pallets?

I started working with Pallets around 2013.

Pallet Project Organization Tip: Make Your Recycled Pallet Wood Box For Less Than 10$

Why did you choose to work with pallets instead of purchased wood?

The price… In Quebec, Canada is it quite cold and trees pretty much only half of the year, which means we have to ship wood all around. Dismantling Pallets also gave me an excellent way to stay active and stay in shape.

What are your can’t-live-without essentials?

I am a technology person first, I cannot live without my phone but I am not a Facebook or texting person… I use my phone' camera to film some of my YouTube content and to find inspiration on Pinterest.

When I am out hunting for Pallets I always have some of my cordless tools just in case I need to "help something fit" so I can bring it home.

Are there any brands that are your favorites?

My cordless tools are Ryobi, other than that I tend to use Dewalt and Ridgid.

Recycled Pallet Dog Steps To Climb Onto The Bed

How would you describe your crafting style?

At the moment I am definitely a rustic type of crafter, even when I’m not working with Pallet wood.

Are there any crafters/artists/designers that you particularly look up to?

I learned about Pallets first from Izzy Swan (Think Woodworks), then from Mike Fulton (MF Woodshop). My original inspiration for woodworking is Marc Spagnuolo (The Woodwhisperer) and favorite is Alain Vaillancourt (The Woodpecker). All of them are on YouTube.

Where do you do your wood crafts? How would you describe your workspace?

I have two houses and use both garages. I am moving to the new bigger garage more and more but do not yet have electricity there. This will ultimately become my woodshop.

Where do you look for inspiration for a new woodcraft?

I watch YouTube, browse Pinterest and of course look at articles on 1001 Pallets!

When do you feel the most creative?

I am an executive and boss during the week… I am a woodworking during the weekend…

Recycled Pallet Garbage Box

We live in such a mass-produced, buy-it-now society. Why should people continue to make things by hand?

Mass production makes you dependent on someone else’s; it causes you to become dependent on those companies. While it would be unrealistic to be able to be completely independent (some people are able to do it) I like to keep some basic skills as they just help me save money.

What is your favorite medium to work in (other than pallets)?

I like to use firewood quite a bit; I have managed to turn some logs into planks. I have done this using a chainsaw and a bandsaw – the bandsaw is my favorite approach. Otherwise I’ll get some rough wood from different stores which I run through the jointer and planer.

What are your tips for people who'd like to start crafting?

Start with a nice kit of cordless tools: circular saw, reciprocating saw and drill… That is really all you need. Anything else you go out and purchase will be a luxury and is difficult to justify… Learn to read pallet codes, 1001Pallets has an excellent article on this. Pick a simple straightforward project and just do it. Accept failure and just try again, success comes from keeping on your craft and not giving up.

What are your most important safety tips when woodworking? Have you ever had any injuries or close calls?

I have experienced kickback on the table saw where a plank flew in my lower abdomen; I have run nails through both my planer and jointer and seen wood explode in the process… I have seen a friend of mine use the wrong side of a table disc sander and end up in the hospital with non-permanent consequences. You should slowly raise the bar and only do things that you are comfortable doing. I find that people are more levelheaded when they are working alone… Do not try to impress anyone, focus on your goal, which is to get the job done safely. Always wear gloves when handling a pallet, you have no idea what it feels like to have a splinter in your good hand and not be able to get it out until your wife comes home from spending the weekend at her mother’s…

What is your guilty pleasure?

I love a good beer… Too much beer and power tools don’t mix… Ever since I bought myself a new table saw I find that I can use it without any beer in my system which I have mixed feelings about… My old table saw was terrifying and I’d use it only as a last resort.

Recycled Pallet Clock

What are some of your other hobbies or favorite things to do (other than crafting)?

I am a YouTube content provider. I like to do pretty much everything myself. I also have brewed beer, brewed wine, made a chainmail shirt, made chainmail necklaces (for my family only) and try to educate my kids about financial intelligence (which they don’t teach in school).

What are some of your best tips for breaking down, prepping, and cleaning pallets before you build with them? Do you have a specific tool you use, or a technique for cleaning the boards/removing nails, etc.?

As you can easily see from my videos, my favorite tools are the Pallet buster and the air punch. The pallet buster will break down those pallets into nice planks without splitting (if it’s not below freezing and you go at a certain speed) and the air punch will allow to remove nails from boards at around 1 nail per 2 seconds.

Have you designed any special tools or jigs for wood crafts?

I have made the same basic things that most woodworkers will do, nothing of significance or special. Wood track saw for cutting straight lines and a table saw sled – those types of things. I have made my own wood cart (you can see it at the end of one of my videos) and my own bench (the bench was not made from pallet wood).

What are some wood working skills you really want to learn?

Given the beautiful types of woods (and colors), you can get from pallets I would love to do intarsia but am nowhere near that yet.

What is the one project you’re the proudest of so far?

2 years ago, I made some wood wall sconces for my mother. Using a birch firewood log that I cut it into planks I created her Christmas present. I included the candleholders for her and she absolutely loved it. The lines in the wood and the amount of time I spent on it made the piece simply awesome.

THE COMPLETE JANE AUSTEN: “Sense and Sensibility”

Shown: Dan Stevens as Edward Ferrars

I have seen Dan Roam speak before, but I have never seen him speak for a full hour. What a treat. He is the most levelheaded brainiac I have ever encountered. Here are some of Dan’s big points:

1) Whoever Draws the Best Picture Wins

2) Q: What kind of problems can you help solve with pictures A: All of them

3) Q: Do the pictures need to be complex? A: No

4) Q: But I can’t draw! Is there any hope for me? A: If you made it through kindergarten, you have the necessary drawing skills.

5) Most educators think pictures are like training wheels. They help novice learners build confidence, but are unnecessary for advanced learning. Actually, pictures are like the steering mechanism of the bicycle of learning. They are useful for every kind of learning. Friends don’t let friends learn without pictures.

6) Drawing pictures of who/what, where, when, how, how much, and why of a problem engages all the different visual perception and processing pathways of our brain, giving us a 360 picture of a problem and opens the maximum range of possibilities for solving it.

7) Teach your clients visual problem solving skills. That means teach them to draw—not fancy photorealistic pictures—rather teach them to draw conceptually powerful diagrams to help them explore the who/what, where, when, how, how much, and why of their problems. This will lead them to the who/what, where, when, how, how much, and why of powerful solutions. Instead of drawing for our clients, we need to teach them how to draw.

Tangent: Dan talked about how Washington DC desperately needs visual problem solving. I share his frustration at the lack of visual thinking in DC. The thing is, based on my 2 years working in DC, many people there do not want clarity. If they had clarity, they might solve problems and be out of a job. Or more charitably, they might have to take a clear position, which can be dangerous in organizational or national politics. Dan?

On a bridge along the Marsh Causeway leading to Knotts Island, Frank Ferreira (top), points out how to tell male crabs from females to his grandchildren Shana Ferreira (not pictured), 12, and Bryan Bell (bottom), 13, Tuesday afternoon. They set up 6 traps and used chicken breasts to lure the 11 crabs they caught in the hour or so they spent along the water. Frank used to take his children crabbing years ago and "it's been a bunch of years so I'm working on the next generation," he said laughing.

-----------

on the long drive back from a bust-of-an-assignment, i stopped and hung out with this family while they crabbed for about an hour.

cuz, why not?

the dynamic between the three reminded me of fishing with my dad and grandfather with my 3 foot bright orange snoopy fishing pole in middle-o-nowhere, georgia (ahem, pronounced "jo-ja") when i was little.

and yes, i did get the impulse to dump the crabs out of the cooler back into the sound and scream "scurry for yourselves!"

and drive off cackling at my feat of heroism.

luckily for this family's stomachs, however, i do pretend to be an "unbiased" journalist and let them catch the little crustaceans without a peep from lil vegetarian, tree smoochin' me.

when grandpa opened the cooler, moments before this frame, all the crabs were attached to each other -- gripping one another with their claws in a chain.

in my mind they were holding claws out of fear... maybe not of the great big pot they'd encounter that night, but out of the shock of nibbling on free chicken one moment and being whisked outta the water and into a cooler the next.

but as one of our layout people (who is a bit more levelheaded) at work said later, the crabs were probably just attempting to assert dominance over one another.

oh, right

well, my version is a bit more romantic.

Doc Ginger’s strong southern charm and kindness should never be mistaken for weakness. Even during the most frantic of situations she remains calm, levelheaded and unafraid to provide the team with sweet but stern direction. Doc Ginger is in Rise of Lyric.

Day 285-Today is Amber Tamblyn's birthday and if you know me, I am a huge fan of her work. I have met her twice in my life and both times have been magical. I decided to do a TRIPLE feature for her special day, both Sisterhood movies and a scary film that she is in.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 1 & 2: I adore these movies and def Amber as Tibby, is one of my favourite parts. She has some of the best lines and seems to be the levelheaded one of the group. I hadnt read the book but I do like how each of the girls has their own personality and each actress gives a great performance as their character. The sequel is golden time and I have to say it is one of the tear jerkingest movies I have ever seen. Still, as far as accessibility goes, its a wonder more movies werent made and how this isnt a current kind of trend. Def end of an era for these types of movies. Its sweet and innocent but still has that tinge of burgeoning adulthood and friendship that is missing from a lot of movies now.

2) this one is a weird one. I think I got it from my video store first and really enjoyed it. Joel plays this man who works in an office building with a friend, Zachary Levi, and Joel paints but we keep seeing this girl, played by Amber, who is like his muse or something. Its hard describe and you have to see it to really understand it. It features a side of Amber I hadnt seen at that point, a semi nude Amber. Its tastefully done but wow. She plays her character masterfully and always puts that emotion and depth into her character, as she does with all her work, not just acting; her poetry and prose is equally powerful.

I feel lucky to even have gotten to talk to her and even gotten ripped on by her, playfully of course, so HBD AmTam! One of my favourite Amber's in my life. <3

I consider myself a pretty level headed person, and by that I don't mean I have a flat head. :) For the most part, I make pretty logical and smart decisions about things. I guess I get that from my dad.

On a side note, man those dark spots/lines under my eyes! I need more sleep!

Monday --

Gates are open, and this morning i have many new neighbors. I made

coffee for myself, for Kelly Peach who dropped by, for the hard-

working Sheik Mystique and my new neighbors Slackjaw,

Laure and Jonathan. Fine neighbors all. I predict good things

in this city, as long as we can keep the ravers out. As I've directed

folks to parking and made introductions I've also floated to everyone

here the idea that we have a special piece of property in this

3:00 public plaza, and that it behooves us to make something of it.

I am pushing for a public park, until a better idea comes along.

I did bring a bench. Hopefully someone brought trees.

My mood is much improved. All yesterday I plodded slowly on my

hung-over mission of shopping in Empire for the Astral Vortex folks.

The pace at which I found myself moving, i regognized, was

something I've only really ever mastered at Burning Man: slow, calm,

smooth, happy. I feel cool-motherfuckerness coursing through my

veins this morning and I intend to use this power for the good of

all mankind. That s the magic of a Jamison's whiskey hangover.

For my next trick, I'm going to strap a fifty pound lead-acid

battery to my tallbike and ride it to KP's camp. Then off to the site

to check in for a shift, then back here to assist the sheik.

If the guy didn't already call himself Mystique, I would call

him Non-Stop. Because he doesn't fucking stop. I thought it might

be coke fueled at some point but he seems too levelheaded for that,

and he confessed a hatred of cocaine and the noses that inhale it.

He's been a personal trainer, and I think he just has far greater

reserves of health and energy than I do. I need to learn from this guy.

He worked all night then took a twenty minute nap and then went back

to it. I feel a bit of guilt that I'm not helping him right now,

but then I remember that my help is a gift, not an obligation.

But I'll be back to help later.
