Nymph and Faun
Sculpture designed and modelled by Charles Hodge Mackie and cast in lead by Charles Henshaw, Edinburgh, in 1914.
Nymph and Faun was orgiinally the fountain centerpiece of a garden pond in Murrayfield, Edinburgh. It was commissioned for 'Westerlea,' the home of John James Cowan, during a larger program of alterations led by famous Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer.
Charles Hodge Mackie was an accomplished printmaker and painter and JJ Cowan was both a friend and keen collector of his work. This explains why Mackie was given this commission in spite of his lack of experience with sculpture. Influenced by Italian Baroque sculpture, Nymph and Faun is Mackie's key work in this medium.
The group is one of the few items cast in lead by the leading Edinburgh foundry of Charles Henshaw. They normally concentrated on producing plaques, memorials, doors and lecterns in bronze or brass.
