HFF!

We just happened upon this Dad with his little girl just watching the water and admiring the view - they were so precious.

History

Isaac W. Bernheim established Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in 1929. I. W. Bernheim (1848-1945) was a German immigrant who settled in Kentucky. From a humble beginning as a peddler, he became successful in the whiskey distilling business where he established the I.W. Harper brand. Grateful for his good fortune, he gave Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest to the people of Kentucky as a gift.

Was driven by a woman, btw. I asked her if I could load my car in there as I was quite fatigued from driving but she said she didn't have any more room in her trailer - it was quite full, she said.

At Beckley Park (part of The Parklands of Floyds Fork there is plenty of room and activities for everyone - playgrounds and spray parks for kids, walking, scenic views, hiking, biking and jogging trails, 4 canoe and kayak access points (hopefully they'll have rentals there one day), mountain biking, sports fields for kicking around a soccer ball or a friendly football game, throwing frisbees, etc... a fabulous Bark Park, Community Gardens, K-6 Science Camps, school field trips, Family Programs, community workshops, birthday parties, Interpretive Hikes, Scout Programs, and so much more! It is an incredibly beautiful facility! Just needs more parking spaces for the fishing lakes). 1411 Beckley Creek Parkway, Louisville, KY 40245

Locomotive Horn Signals

Ever wondered why the UP locomotives running on the track just down the block always sound their horns four times when approaching your street? Or heard a whole series of short whistle blasts and wondered what they meant? Horns are sounded for safety reasons – to warn of approaching trains. The following list "translates" some of those horn signals. The "o" indicates short sounds and "=" is for longer sounds. The General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) contains information on horn use. These rules are frequently updated, and for the most up to date information, the sources of record are the GCOR, General Orders, Subdivision General Orders and Superintendent Bulletins.

Sound / Indication

Succession of short soundsThe whistle is sounded in an attempt to attract attention to the train. It is used when persons or livestock are on the track at other-than-road crossings at grade.

=When train is stopped. The air brakes are applied and pressure is equalized.

= =Train releases brakes and proceeds.

o oAcknowledgment of any signal not otherwise provided for.

o o oWhen train is stopped: means backing up, or acknowledgment of a hand signal to back up.

o o o oA request for a signal to be given or repeated if not understood.

= o o oInstruction for flagman to protect rear of train.

= = = =The flagman may return from west or south.

= = = = =The flagman may return from east or north.

= = o =Train is approaching public crossings at grade with engine in front.

o =Inspect the brake system for leaks or sticking brakes.

= o

Train is approaching men or equipment on or near the track, regardless of any whistle prohibitions.

After this initial warning, "o o" sounds intermittently until the head end of train has passed the men or equipment.

Horn Signals: A Proven Safety Precaution

On April 27, 2005, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), which enforces rail safety regulations, published the Final Rule on the Use of Locomotive Horns at Highway-Rail Grade Crossings. Effective June 24, 2005, the Final Rule requires that locomotive horns be sounded at all public grade crossings 15-20 seconds before entering a crossing, but not more than one-quarter mile in advance.

The pattern for blowing the horn remains two long, one short, and one long sounding to be repeated as necessary until the locomotive clears the crossing. Locomotive engineers will retain the authority to vary this pattern as necessary for crossings in close proximity. Locomotive engineers will be allowed to sound the horn in emergency situations consistent with the Final Rule.

A ban on locomotive horns in Florida was ordered removed by the FRA after it was shown that the accident rate doubled during the ban. The Final Rule preempts any state or local laws regarding the use of the train horn at public crossings. The Final Rule also provides public authorities the option to maintain and/or establish quiet zones provided certain supplemental or alternative safety measures are in place and the crossing accident rate meets FRA standards. Charlie Vettiner Golf Course is designated as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program. To reach certification, a course must demonstrate a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including environmental Planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education and water quality management. louisvilleky.gov/content/charlie-vettiner-golf-course

The last time I'd visited this golf course there were dozens of waste containers filled to the brim with overflowing beer cans and bottles. Be wary of drunk drivers leaving this area - the life you save could be your own. The least they can do is recycle them.

Dead & dying trees could be seen throughout this course - it is also a favorite roosting area for vultures and condors.

The water surrounding this area is polluted and sewage-laden. Not a great testimony for Audubon, Louisville or Jefferson County, Kentucky. It would behoove the powers to be to ascertain the reasons for and address the numerous environmental challenges this, as well as other courses in the area face. It would also behoove the powers to be to protect local residents from the drunk golfers (and their families) entering and leaving this as well as other golf courses in the area as they, themselves do not have the capacity to do so.

This site, also, is within walking distance from my home. It's a big one.

This area is directly across the street from Kentucky One Medical Center Jewish Northeast / James Graham Brown Cancer Center (below). Immediately behind the tower is a playground and soccer field. This tower is less than 20 ft. from homes which cannot be seen due to strategically placed shrubbery. As you can see when enlarging this photo there are small children living here.

Per Section 332(c)(7) of the Communications Act - Allegations that a state or local government has acted inconsistently with Section 332(c)(7) are to be resolved exclusively by the courts (with the exception of cases involving regulation based on the health effects of RF emissions, which can be resolved by the courts or the FCC Commission).

A new tower construction requires:

Approval from the state or local governing authority for the proposed site;

Compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA);

Compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA); and may require

Notification to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); and

Antenna Structure Registration (ASR) with the FCC.

Light's on but nobody's home....

Here we have orange lifesavers strewn across the railings of this bridge. What are they for? Are they to grab and throw to something or someone one might spot in the mighty Ohio River to save their life? Serious question. We did not stop to see if these lifesavers were easily detachable in the event of an emergency.

There are bike lanes going across this bridge - not all the way over. Only 3/4 of the way. Either Indiana does not want Kentucky bicyclists peddling into their state or Kentucky ran out of paint. Hard to say what the logic is on this particular bridge but the planning took decades.

E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park - One of the most unique state parks in Kentucky is E.P. “Tom” Sawyer. The 550- acre park is located in Louisville in the northeastern part of Jefferson County off Westport Road. Named in honor of former Jefferson County Judge Executive Erbon Powers Sawyer (1915-1969), the Commonwealth of Kentucky originally purchased the land for the park in June 1969 from the Kentucky Department of Mental Health. The Kentucky Department of Parks leased the land and the buildings in 1970 and the park opened in 1974. A portion of the property had once been used for farmland for the mental health hospital.

We are unsure what this is - it is an old tobacco barn and the owner hung this up to keep the flies off of the horses although we are unsure what is inside this. One of those old world secrets. I wish we had learned this one.
