I struggled with the third exercixe, the Light & Dark as I could not see the difference between 'shaded' areas and shadow. It seemed like torture to be trying to locate where the darks went without any guide lines and my brain wanted to do the volumes exercise first, but no, I persevered. I feel that I learned more after each attempt at these exercises and have taken on board Liz's advice about not stressing, enoying and trusting the process. Things can only get better from here on in I think!
The final sketch of Manly Church for #lesson1 #lesson1manly
I felt like I rushed some parts of this but over all I'm happy with what I've produced. All the exercises we did leading up to this were so helpful for getting to know this building. I'm usually tempted just to dive in with a pen and then I don't always explore the angles and shapes as well as I could.
I struggled with the continuous line, this drawing consists of 4 continuous lines. Nontheless I had a lot of fun and am quite satisfied with the end result.
continuous line. A nice way to explore the building. I liked to add the people as well. #sketchingnowbuildings
I felt very strong about this drawing after working through the other exercises. I think the process helped to see the angles and proportiosn I struggled with earlier in the process.
I found it difficult to focus on the negative space rather than the sky but hopefully with practise I can get better at switching the object bit of my brain off for a while! I think this was good exercise for me because I tend to get so bogged down and distracted by tiny details, which I couldn't do here. #lesson1 #lesson1manly
I think the left building and the right side of the tower are not foreshortened enough. #lesson1manly
didn't get the windows on the left correct. I stopped drawing before I got lost in details. because of the exercises before constructing this building was easier.
I find feeling edges most comfortable, but that may be because I always stick to line drawings, paying less attention to shapes and volumes. I need to combine those 3.
Catching up with SketchingNow Buildings homework. These were done from a photo reference - practicing continuous line, abstracting shapes, and constructing volumes. Read more about it on my course notes blog at : jblodget-buildings.blogspot.com/2016/09/lesson-1-manly-ch... .

My approach of the church with some setting lines (blue). It´s ok, but I like my continuous line drawing more - I think it´s more dynamic. Can you say so for a building?
I've not done a continuous line drawing of such a complex subject before (and never of a building). This was fun and I enjoyed the challenge of not being able to lift my pen. I think it was a good way for me to loosen up a bit. #lesson1 #lesson1manly
This was the easiest of these 4 exercises of Manly church for me as I usually use constructing volumes when I sketch. Again I liked adding the people. #sketchingnowbuildings
