Seen Lesser Redpolls for a few days running along the local brook, feeding on willowherb and goat willow buds. Not an everyday bird in my corner of MK so always a treat to see, especially perched. My first two for last Autumn were on the very early date of 11th September and they have passed through regularly since, usually as lone birds or single figure flocks flying over. In late 2019 I only had a few sightings of them here towards the end of the year.

Lesser Scaup
Aythya affinis
I originally thought I was seeing a bunch of greater scaup, but then as I looked closer I realized that these were LESSER scaup - pointed head, barring on the flanks, small 'nail' on the bill and the purplish sheen (yeah, I know that's arbitrary but works together with the other field marks).

Started today's morning walk with my latest ever Lesser Redpolls for Milton Keynes, with some superb views of them feeding on aspen catkins in the same area as my first ever Mealy Redpoll on Thursday.
There were at least 11 today (30 yesterday), this being one of two that had silver rings, though the other had its ring on the left leg instead meaning it will have come from a different bird ringing project. As overwintering visitors, they're usually gone from my patch until the autumn long before the end of April.

Sirens, like this one, are undergoing taxonomic revisions. This individual would currently be considered a Siren intermedia, but that designation may change.
