The Michigan LEGO User Group's train display at the 2018 Brickworld Michigan (September 22 and 23 at the Suburban Collection Showcase in Novi, Michigan).
One corner of the layout had my LEGO model of Detroit's Wayne County Buiding. To the left is a model of Toledo's Government Center.
My new Guardian Building model made its debut as part of the annual Michigan LEGO Train Club (MichLTC) display at the Henry Ford Museum on November 23rd, 2014. I believe that this display which contains six skyscraper models over 5 feet high is MichLTCs largest LEGO skyline EVER! The display runs from November 24th through January 4th, 2015.
Detroit building models in the layout include the following (*= I built it):
1. Guardian Building*
2. Buhl Building
3. Ford Building*
4. Greater Penobscot Building (includes 1905, 1913, and 1928 Penobscot Buildings)*
5. Savoyard Center*
6. Dime Building / Chrysler House
7. David Stott Building*
8. 25 State Street (former Cunningham Drugs / Colonial Dept. store)*
9. Union Depot train station*
10. 1001 Woodward.

Disclaimer: It was not my idea to use the term "towering ambition".
Also on December 7, 2014, Jim Schaefer of the Detroit Free Press posted a story which he called "A Few Minutes With... A LEGO Extremist" !

Several floors' facades already finished, just to preview and see how the design holds up when stacked 10+ storeys high.

Here is my attempt to build a replica of an entire city block. It just happens to include two structures that at one time claimed the title as the tallest building in Detroit and another that was 2nd tallest. In 1909 the newly completed Ford Building (on the left) was the tallest. The Penobscot Annex (not pictured) which was completed in 1913 was just edged out as the tallest by the Dime Building. Finally, in 1928, the 47 story Penobscot Building became the tallest building in Detroit, a position it held until 1977 when superseded by the RenCen.
The Penobscot Building is my tallest LEGO skyscraper, which including the red ball on top, is 11 feet high and weighs approximately 160 pounds (all LEGO).
This city block measures 160 LEGO studs by 192 studs (4'2" x 5').

Never done before at a large scale (and we found out why) Marina Bay sands from Singapore.
Everything about this building was difficult. constant curves and changing shapes made it amazingly time consuming.

The third LEGO skyscraper goes up in Wasabi District! At just over 3 feet tall and over 5000 pieces, this 10-storey building is the first office skyscraper in Wasabi District!
This is the office floor, with a receptionist's desk, 3 office desks and a manager's office, as well as a storage room.
My Lego model of Detroit's Penobscot Building. I recently test assembled it outside of my house (I do not have ceilings high enough to put it up indoors). This Lego skyscraper measures 9.5 feet to the roof and 11 feet to the tip of the mast. I am not 100% satisfied with the proportions so I may remove one of the top floors and perhaps add three floors in the middle section. It was displayed to the public for the first time at Cobo Conference Center from July 27-29 as part of the Lego train display at the 2007 NMRA National Train Show.
Since this photo was taken, I have rebuilt the building with a more accurate 47 stories instead of the old 41 story version. Its about the same overall height since I reduced the height of the 6th and higher floors by 1 brick.
By the way, my height is 5'10".

The National Model Railroad Association's annual National Train Show is in a different city each year. For 2007 it was in Detroit, Michigan. The train show was open to the public from July 27-29.
This image shows part of the Michigan Lego Train Club (MichLTC) layout. Several Detroit landmarks are present including:
Penobscot building(1928 and 1905 versions)
David Stott Building
Fisher Building
Kean Apartments
Chase One Bank
Compuware
1001 Woodward
Griswold Building
(also visible is a very large version of the Uniroyal Tire).
Some non-prototypical buildings are in the foreground.
I like this image because it shows that MichLTC's Lego Detroit had enough buildings in it that it approaches the density and complexity of a real city.

HVAC units comprise the roof of the building.
After four years of LEGO construction, my model of the Penobscot Block is complete. It includes models of the Savoyard Center, 1900 (1 foot high), original Penobscot Building, 1905 (3 feet high), Ford Building, 1909 (4 feet high), Penobscot Annex, 1913 (5.5 feet high), and the Penobscot Building, 1928 (9.5 feet to roof, 11 feet to top of spire). The entire block probably weighs on the order of 400 pounds.
The Penobscot Block is being displayed at the Midland Center for the Arts as part of the Art of the Brick exhibit featuring the LEGO art of Nathan Sawaya (June 12 to September 2, 2010). Eighteen of J Spencer Rezkalla's microscale skyscrapers comprising his Skyline exhibit are also on display. The Michigan LEGO train club will have a train and town layout with operating LEGO trains.

I tried to make the rooftop one of the most detailed mechanical / HVAC LEGO layouts out there..
My LEGO model of the Guardian is now reaching the 25th story of its full the 40 story height on the north tower. It is currently 5 feet (1.524 meters) high and the eight modular sections currently weight in aggregate 116 pounds (52.6 Kg).
Number 10 in a series of images showing construction of a LEGO model of the Ford Building in Detroit (1909 - Daniel Burnham architect).
The exterior of the building is basically complete. A little bit of work on the fire escape and some details of the interior on the first floor remain. Once its done I will post a few shots of the other sides of the building and a few details. In order to complete the entire Penobscot block I still need to complete the Savoyard Center and build the Penobscot Annex. Once complete it and the other Penobscot buildings will make a city block that will cover 30 green base plates (each 32x32 studs).

A view of the Grand Blvd. facade of my LEGO model of the Fisher Building. It is still a work in progress; the model is about 95% complete. The lighting in this photo is perhaps not the best but it would take about 30 minutes just to disassemble and reassemble the building in order to rotate it for a better angle!
