The castle was built in the fourteenth century by the Latimer family.Danby is a quadrangular castle, a rectangular building with a central courtyard and towers at each corner.

When the Latimer family became extinct in the male line at the end of the fourteenth century, the estate passed to the powerful Neville family, The Neville Arms are still to be seen on the south wall of the Courtroom.

In the sixteenth century John Neville, Lord Latimer, (1493-1543), who owned Danby Estate, married Catherine Parr as his third wife and their marital home was Danby Castle. After Neville's death Catherine Parr became the sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII.

The South Range of the Castle was converted into a manorial Courthouse Danby Castle is still the venue for the Danby Court Leet, which meets in October.

The Estate passed to the Danvers family. In the seventeenth century Danby was purchased by John Dawnay, later created Viscount Downe.

Down in Danby stands the estate’s former hunting lodge, now the Moors National Park Centre.

New Bridge, Lydiate Lane, Matshead

Grid reference SD 52262 40961

There was once a leet which fed water from this point to a waterwheel that powered a long gone 18th century linen mill, that once stood at Matshead.

An eastbound NS manifest train passes the classic PRR signal bridge at Leetsdale, PA during a snow storm. These signals have since been replaced.

The cottage dates to 1695 and it is written above the front door.

Spaunton is a hamlet and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. At the 2011 the civil parish had a population of less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Lastingham. It is situated near Lastingham and about 5 miles (8 km) north west of Pickering. The name Spaunton derives from Old Norse and means a farmstead or settlement which had shingle roofs.

Spaunton consists of a single village street lined with cottages and farmhouses dating from the 17th Century and is typical of many North Yorkshire Moors villages and hamlets. The fields around Spaunton are set out on a Roman pattern and at the beginning of the 19th Century a Roman Burial place was discovered near the village.

Excavations some sixty years later also unearthed the foundations of a very large medieval hall which indicated that Spaunton was a very important village owned by St Mary’s Abbey in York.

When the estate was sold in the 16th Century, the new landowners constituted a special court for the manor, grandly called the Court Leet and Court Baron with View of Frankenpledge. The court meets annually in October and decides on matters of encroachment onto the common land and who can graze animals in the village and hands down fines to offenders who trangress.

More recent history of the village records that just after 9:00 pm on the 7 October 1943, a Lancaster bomber from No. 408 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, crashed into the village with a full load of ordnance. One of the bombs exploded and killed a civilian from the village, Mr George Strickland as he went to see what the noise was about. He is buried in Lastingham graveyard.

Leetsdale, just east of Conway, has been a railfan hotspot for decades. On this March 1977 day, we see an eastbound rolling through town with four patched CR engines up front, GP40 3217 up front. Note the ex-Reading unit in the last position. When Conrail closed their towers, this location became CP LEETS. The lunar lights by the home signals were removed, addition home signals added, and of course LEETSDALE Tower was closed. Also of note is the shanty where the crossing gate operator would be stationed.
