...will cause you to see part of the shutter, hurrying to get out of the way before the flash pops and your exposure is created. At one point during the shoot I inadvertently bumped the shutter adjustment dial and wound up taking it to 1/400. Since the max flash sync speed on a D200 is 1/250 sec. I caught the shutter in flight, adding the dark bar to my photograph and slightly underexposing part the image.

So many things went awry with these rolls that it's difficult to sort it all out. massive, ugly grain, no definition and extreme contrast, poorly exposed. . . many were overexposed due to sloppy metering, I should have gotten out the nd filter, and then there were troubles getting the rolls on the reels. developing at 82 degrees (can't get around this), possibly too much time in the soup. plus, my method of scanning negatives leaves a lot to be desired! but I think I might have learned some things.

I don't like this. At all. sigh.

These little devils are the ones that did me in with a massive chemical burn.

If you're looking for a solution to a hot pepper burn (capacsin), when people say cold milk, it's true. Takes the pain out immediately as long as you stay soaking in it.

Depending on the amount of exposure, that may do you. I was exposed to about 3 pounds of peppers (insides, taking out the seeds and chopping them), which, granted, is my own daft fault, but still, none of the normal treatments were cutting it.

I couldn't use my hands at all, any pressure was an intensification of the heat. Such heat! Like holding a flame.

Eventually I read that Maalox worked for someone, a 20 minute soak. I soaked my left hand for 20 very painful minutes (the Maalox does NOT dull the flame, and seemed to intensify it), then washed my hand off and put it in the cold milk bath.

Where 20 minutes prior the milk felt like it was was room temperature, when I put the Maalox soaked hand into the milk, it felt like it truly was - ice cold and hard to endure. While I was attempting to soak the left hand in the milk, the right hand was happily in it up to the wrist as if it were a lukewarm bath.

About 20-30 minutes after the Maalox soak, my left hand was no longer on fire. It felt muffled and swollen, but not on fire.

So I put my right hand in, and soaked it for 20 very painful minutes as well. Same results.

So! If you get a severe hot pepper burn, consider using an anti-acid solution to ease it!

It took a few days before I could use my hands properly. Typing was a bit hit or miss as my hands were acting as if gloved and were aching some (but not on fire).

Moral of the story: always wear gloves while chopping peppers. And keep Maalox and cold milk around for any burns!

I have discovered that the calendar of what's on in April in the Hunter Valley, that's run by *Out of my Mind* is an excellent resource; very handy, and it gets me out of the house to go and in place for the opportunity for interesting photos.

Another shot from the Supernatural performance in Birdwood park.

A salvaged image, not originally conceived as a silhouette. (But fun to have nonetheless). Shooting people on trapezes is an excellent exercise in... something.

I guess the lessons I learned from this are:

1) The importance of anticipation. Performances are a bit like sports photography.

2) When there is a predictable path of travel, letting the subject come to you, rather than being a tennis spectator, can yield a much higher number of usable shots.

3) The autofocus on the 350D when through f5 and up, can not handle this sort of situation, especially when a dark subject is moving against a dark background, then suddenly swinging up into the light

4) My manual focus isn't much better. ;)

5) Wider shots are probably the way to go until technique is refined and the lighting is favourable.

A panorama of the Mass Ave bridge that I cludged together from 4 shots. Considering this was my first attempt, I can live with the results.

Still working on improving my DoF techniques.

18/365: 18 January 2011

I actually started the muxtape cover with this. While I was listening to it, I was doodling the "Blues Time Machine" thing, and was just going to go with that.

Then I realized I just didn't care for it that much.

This is the shot that proved to me that I'm finally thinking like a photographer. I was stood on the step at high tide (you can see the railing in the foreground) at dusk, trying to get a good shot of the surf breaking for five minutes. My mate, Bruce was four steps behind me. I had promised I wouldn't get the camera wet. But, when Bruce warned me of a huge wave coming in, I didn't move to protect the camera, or hide it under my jacket. No, I started shooting, looking for the shot that would make me. Both me and the camera got drenched with salt water, but I knew what it meant... I cared more about the shot that the camera and lens. And, that, my friends, strikes me as a good way to be.
