This magnificent pine tree is located in Baltimore, MD, which I came across while on a walk. The area is pretty urbanized, but there are a lot of little pockets of neighborhoods that are sheltered from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. The main portion of the picture that I want to draw attention to is the wooden box that is encompassing the base of the tree. The “box” is really just a square ring placed into the ground, but this simple structure has a whole plethora of uses and benefits. The box is filled with pine needles, of course, but also grass clippings and fallen leaves collected from some of the nearby oak trees. As it all decomposes, nutrients will go back into the soil and directly benefit the tree. The ground the tree is growing out of is slightly sloped and I could see that some roots were starting to become exposed. The natural mulching of leaves and grass will help to keep the roots covered, while still allowing the roots to have access to adequate oxygen. Since the box is level it will help to deter erosion and further root exposure. This box will also serve to protect the soil directly underneath the tree from becoming compacted from lawn mowers. Compaction of soil will destroy the air and water pore spaces, as well as make it harder for roots to penetrate into the ground.
This is connected to SDG #4, Quality Education. The owners of the house were able to recognize there was a problem with the environment surrounding the tree and had the resources to learn how to fix it. The University of Maryland is a Land Grant institution, which means that they have an Extension Office that provides free agricultural related education and training to the community. The extension website is very easy to navigate and citizens can find information on anything from how to start a garden to solving issues such as exposed tree roots. Trees are vital to urban living and not just because they produce oxygen. They can also slow water runoff, serve as a noise buffer, keep homes cool, and provide scenic views while you're in a zoom meeting. Community members have access to the educational tools that will help preserve the limited tree foliage in urban areas, which is important to our livelihoods. Every state in the U.S. has an extension office that offers these educational services, but this isn’t always true on the global scale. Teaching everyone how to garden or maintain their landscapes will increase the amount of people that can contribute to the global effort of preserving our environment.

The KP showed students a variety of forensic and crime scene investigation equipment and the Border Department showed off their land navigation tools, speciality vehicles and one of their working dogs.
