Lean on me
when you're not strong
and i'll be your friend
i'll help you carry on
it wont be long
till i'm gonna be
somebody to lean on
Lean on me when you're not strong,
and I'll be your friend.
I'll help you carry on,
for it won't be long
'til I'm gonna' need
somebody to lean on.
- Bill Withers
Most people move away when someone leans on them.
Today, stick. Help someone who feels worse off than you, someone who is looking to you to be a channel for the Light.
So, I'm a woman with a LEAN POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME DIET. Technically, this means I am 1 in 3 women with PCOS who are not overweight or obese. In this I am proud and happy. I am proud that with this disease I can lead a healthy lifestyle. I was lucky because genetics helped me with this. The causes of excess weight in PCOS are deeply rooted, complex and multifactorial, with a strong genetic component.
After much experimentation, I know which foods are good for my body and which are not. I'm talking about how food makes me feel, not how I look. This is a big but necessary shift that you need to make when you have PCOS. The food I eat determines how I feel that day, and often the next. My comfortable shoes contain "slow" carbs (brown rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes), healthy proteins and fats.
You should experiment with which foods from each category are right for you (hence my failed "turkey jerky phase"). Most of what is offered in restaurants or when I travel is not suitable for me. For example, a continental breakfast. This breakfast is a war zone for women with PCOS, filled with land mines such as baked goods, bagels and sugar yogurt. So, I became the person to bring my own package of nuts and diet bars.
If I don't prepare and eat only what is available, I fall asleep around 2 to 3 pm, have trouble concentrating, and become irritable the rest of the day (blister reopening). I have learned to fully prepare for my food and am pleasantly surprised if the food at my destination is PCOS certified.
