Tropical Leafwing Butterfly landed on an oak twig at the Deep Creek Ranch, Uvalde Co. Tx.

Compare this specimen to the previous photo, taken at a slightly different angle, where in addition to the extensive black speckling, there are unusually pink, blue, and silvery tones on this individual. This demonstrates how difficult it can be to identify a specimen based solely on a single shot, without the benefit of different lighting conditions (flash versus natural light, for instance) and different angles to provide clues to the identity of the butterfly.

Australian Leafwing, Butterfly in Forest Near Kuranda, North Queensland, Australia

A jazzy leafwing butterfly. Taken at the butterfly garden within the grounds of Ecocentro Danaus, about 2 km east of the town of La Fortuna.

This elusive butterfly is almost impossible to see when in the upwing position. The underwing is gray and blends with most nature surrounding. Then, when they open the wings the beauty of the orange color jumps out at you. Fun to chase at Crooked Creek, Yellville, Arkansas.
