Anaea andria. Blunn Creek Preserve, Austin. A bit worn, and a bad background, but I don't get many wings-open shots of these.
Another early springtime butterfly, this is the Goatweed Leafwing (Anaea andria) with its distinctive wing shape that appears like a dead leaf when viewed from the underside, at Walker Ranch Park in San Antonio.

First of the season! We have these every year in our backyard. Each generation perches on the same tree. It has to be the camouflage that works well for them.
Rolled up in it's home, Prairie Tea (Croton monanthogynus). Milwaukee Road Trail, Lawrence Co., Bedford, IN
Update: The consensus is that this is a goatweed leafwing, Anaea andria.
This butterfly looks totally different (like a grayish-brown dead leaf) when the wings are folded.

This reddish-brown butterfly was in Alamos, Sonora, in early November 2007. I think it is an Tropical Leafwing. Can anyone confirm the identification?
...but there's nothing subtle about the upperside! A perfect example of "flash" coloration, which startles a predator or confuses it when it suddenly "disappears" to look like a brown leaf.
Hypna clytemnestra, common name marbled leafwing or silver-studded leafwing, is a species of Neotropical butterflies belonging to the Nymphalidae family, Charaxinae subfamily.
Hypna clytemnestra is the largest member of Anaeini. This “leafwing butterfly” is quite uncommon. The uppersides of the forewings are black, with a few white spots on the margins and two large white transverse bands. The uppersides of the hindwings are maily brown. The undersides mimic dead leaves, ranging from dark brown to whitish. Larvae feed on Croton floribundus (Euphorbiaceae), while adults feed on rotting fruits.
