We went to the Pocket at Pigeon Mountain yesterday (3-31-14) and I was amazed at the numbers of butterflies we saw. I counted 21 just on the drive up there (it's in NW Georgia near Lookout Mountain). Then we saw quite a few flying at the Pocket, including rare West Virginia White's and a lifer Goatweed leafwing. We're not in its range here at home and it was on my bucket list - but I didn't know if I'd ever see one. Here's what we saw:

Goatweed leafwing - one, lifer

Spicebush swallowtails - 3 (foty)

Tiger swallowtails - several

Juvenal's duskywings - dozens (foty)

Orange sulphur - 1

Pearl crescent - 1 (foty)

Silver-spotted skipper - 1 (foty)

Eastern-tailed blues - several (foty)

In past years we've seen Falcate orangetips, Zebra & Giant swallowtails - but none flying yet. The Pocket is actually well-known for rare wildflowers ... I haven't looked this one up yet. The White's would not land on the beautiful blue & pink Virginia bluebells nor on the bright yellow Celandine poppies .... only on white or pale wildflowers.

Anaea andria. Wait long enough and they will open their wings a little. Generally they keep their wings closed, and they look like dried leaves.

Our first day around the Jacksonville area ... we headed over to Gainesville where we visited the amazing Museum of Natural History. Not just any museum ... the displays are brilliantly done, and bring everything to life.

There is also a Butterfly Garden there.

Doleschallia is a genus of butterflies of the subfamily Nymphalinae in the family Nymphalidae. With their wings closed Doleschallia resemble dead leaves. Another Indo-Australian genus Kallima, and the African genera Kamilla, Mallika and Kallimoides are collectively known as dead leaf butterflies. They have a pronounced wing apex, and the hindwing tornus is extended and forms a short tail. This shape, together with the dead-leaf colouration, complete with a "midrib", and markings which resemble patches of mould and leaf galls gives the butterfly a remarkable resemblance to an attached or fallen dead leaf.

Doleschallia bisaltide, the autumn leaf, is a nymphalid butterfly found in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Australasia. In Australia it is also known as the leafwing.

They feed on Artocarpus, Pseuderanthemum, Calycanthus, Ruellia, Girardina, Strobilanthus and Graptophyllum.

There are several subspecies.
