Tyrian Leafwing

This is a lifer photo of the top of a Goatweed Leafwing. I have zillions of side (ventral view) photos, but had never been lucky enough to get a dorsal view photo. Now I need the deep, rich, red velvety top of a male...next time. I do like the markings on the female. The male is much darker with fewer markings.

Doleschallia bisaltide, commonly known as the Autumn Leaf, is a nymphalid butterfly found in India, also found in Australia where they are known as Leafwing.

Autumn Leaf is nectaring on Chaya. Chaya is a little known leafy green vegetable of dry regions of the tropics. The name comes from the Mayan chay. Other common names are tree spinach, chaya col, kikilchay, and chaykeken.

Not the most common butterfly, restricted mainly to Southern Florida in the pinelands. It is bright orange inside but rarely do you see that unless it is flying.

Consul fabius, common name Tiger Leafwing, is the most common and well known species of the genus Consul of subfamily Charaxinae in the brush-footed butterfly family (Nymphalidae). It is found all over the Neotropics.

The length of the forewings reaches about 30–40 millimetres. The upersides of the wings have a bright orange and black pattern, with two yellow bands across the angular forewings. The hindwings are tailed. This butterfly is part of a mimicry ring, as a matter of fact the cryptic undersides of the wings mimic a dead-leaf.

An old rock, gravel road in north Arkansas, far off the beaten path, provided the source for this seldom seen butterfly. In the wing up position, it blends in with the scenery nicely. However, the open wings are bright orange.

Goatweed Leafwing Butterfly at Lake Houston, Texas 3-1-17.

I took a few shots of this Tiger Leafwing on nearby vegetation and then it flew over and landed on my hand, then flew up to my nose! Butterfly Rainforest at the Florida Museum of Natural History (Gainesville, FL). Consul fabius, Nymphalidae.

Every time this plant flowers, it attracts sap-feeding butterflies, such as the Shoemaker (left) and Banded Leafwing (right).
