Kallima paralekta, commonly known as Indian or Malayan Leafwing, is a species of brush-footed butterfly of the genus Kallima (oakleafs). Despite its common names, it is not found in India or Malaysia but is endemic to Java and Sumatra of Indonesia. Like other members of its genus, it is remarkable for its strong resemblance to a dead leaf when its wings are folded. The species contains two subspecies, Kallima paralekta paralekta and Kallima paralekta tribonia.
The upper surfaces of the wings of the male Kallima paralekta have oblique bright orange bands on the upper surfaces of their forewings, the inner borders of which terminate at the lower corner of the forewings. The areas below the orange bands and the entire upper surface of the hindwings are a brilliant deep blue to purple. The females lack the bright coloration of the males. Their upper surfaces are generally a rusty brown. They also possess broad oblique bands on their forewings, but these are white in color. The tips of the forewings are hooked.
The undersides of the wings of both sexes are highly variable but the colors are those of dead leaves… grays, browns, reds, olive greens or pale yellows. They are extraordinary representations of decaying leaves. Blotches, dark spots and powdery dots are so realistic that observers may be tricked into thinking the butterfly itself is being attacked by actual fungi. Also on the wings there are are small and oval scaleless areas (hyaline spots) that look like transparent "windows" and mimic holes left by insect larvae on leaves.
Tips of the forewings are pointed, while tips of the hindwings extend to a short narrow tail, resembling leaf petioles. Running through the middle of forewings and hindwings is a line, dark on one side and light on the other, like the shaded and illuminated sides of a leaf midrib. From this line are fainter lines resembling the secondary venation of leaves. The head and antennae fit exactly into the curve of the closed upper wings to maintain the outline. Resulting minor irregularities resemble the wrinkled edges of withered leaves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kallima_paralekta

Polyura is the genus of nawab butterflies. They belong to the brush-footed butterfly subfamily Charaxinae, or leafwing butterflies.
The red proboscis is a sipping straw through which the butterfly is feeding on sweet banana juices. I love the dead-leaf-like outer wings which contrast so markedly from the black with iridescent blue upper wings. Such wonderful camouflage!
I am fascinating by the differences in appearance of butterflies with their wings open and closed. Amazing and surprising designs! A challenge to learn their different appearances and habits but oh so delightful to recognize them again and again.
Archaeoprepona demophon, One spotted prepona
Too bad they perch with their wings closed. The upperwing is a brilliant reddish-orange.

I took a few shots of this Tiger Leafwing on nearby vegetation and then it flew and landed on my hand. You can see it is sampling the salt on my skin. After this, it flew up and landed on my nose. I had a difficult time dislodging it from that perch. Sorry no photos of that! Butterfly Rainforest at the Florida Museum of Natural History (Gainesville, FL). Consul fabius, Nymphalidae.

Anea andria. This one is backlit by the sun. Normally with wings folded this butterfly is extremely drab, looking like a dead and withered leaf. But the top of the wing is brilliant orange, and here the orange is showing through in the the sunlight.

I was so happy when I spotted this Eastern Comma (Polygonia comma) resting on this old tree stump. I had never seen one until this summer. This one was a a real surprise..and this is NOT CROPPED.......These butterflies are hard to spot, when their wings are closed they are brown and could easily be mistaken for a leaf.. ;)
"Commas are part of an association of butterflies commonly known as "anglewings," which have sharply angled wings. When folded at rest, the undersides resemble dead leaves or pieces of bark. This group includes anglewings, tortoiseshells, commas, question marks, leafwings, snouts and daggerwings."
"There are two nearly identical butterflies with the curious names of Question Mark and Comma. Even the scientific names reflect this curiosity. One being P. interrogationis and the other P. comma.
For some strange reason, the Comma is also known as the "Hop Merchant" in spite of the fact that they both lay eggs on and the larvae thrive on hops, nettle and elm leaves.
The only visible difference between the two is the shape of very small silver marking on the underside of the hind wing. In one case it looks like a comma and the other has a small dot below it making it look sort of like a question mark."
I had earlier thought this was a Question Mark butterfly however, many thanks to IPS for the corrected ID. Earlier this summer I did take a photo of a Question Mark on a fallen pear which I will post soon ;) for you to see. Ian pointed out to me that the difference between the two from this top view. (thanks again Ian)
Enjoy!
This cryptically marked butterfly is a species of forest and forest edge in both Jamaica and Hispaniola. It is apparently quite widespread in Jamaica but this was the only location we saw it during our March trip. Evie and I did not see it in the Dominican Republic earlier in March.
Quite possibly a first Weld County record of this se. butterfly. Bright orange above, when the wings are close, it resembles a brown leaf -- usually. Photographed in poor light, the underwing of this butterfly takes on a lovely, albeit subtle, iridescence .

Genesis 1:24-25 (NLT)
Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
DRAWING NOTES:
TIME OF DAY:
Indeterminate
LIGHTING NOTES:
Light is entering the scene from the sun above, diffused by the clouds.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
God is present, of course. See below for the list of animals present in this scene.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
I wanted to represent the major groups of land animals in this scene which are:
Invertebrates - animals that lack a backbone. Invertebrates account for more than 97% of all species alive today. They include animal groups such as sponges, cnidarians, flatworms, molluscs, arthropods, insects, segmented worms, and echinoderms as well as many other lesser-known groups of animals.
Vertibrates - animals that have a backbone. When classifying these animals they can be divided up into 7 broad groups:
1) Agnatha - jawless fish that do not have scales which are the lampreys and hagfish.
2) Chondrichthyes - rough cartilage vertebrates rather than bone, such as sharks and rays.
3) Osteichtyes - bony fish. This group includes almost all fish. Skeletons are made of mostly bone. Includes: Sunfish, Catfish, Minnows, Perch, Goldfish, and most others, like tuna, bass, and salmon.
4) Amphibia - These animals have smooth skin, and most spend at least part of their life in water. Amphibians are cold-blooded. They usually have three life stages: egg, larva, adult. Includes: Frogs, Toads, Salamanders, and Newts.
5) Reptilia - These animals have dry, scaly skin that does not need to be kept wet. They are cold-blooded. Most reptiles lay soft-shelled eggs, but some bear live young. Includes: Lizards, Snakes, Turtles, and Crocodiles.
6) Aves - Birds are warm-blooded. They have hollow bones and feathers. Most can fly at least short distances. Birds are born from hard-shelled eggs. Includes: Raptors, Gulls, Songbirds, and Fowl.
7) Mammalia - These animals usually have hair/fur. They give birth to live young and feed their young with milk. Mammals are warm-blooded. Includes: Rodents, Hoofed animals, Marsupials, Bats, Rabbits, Weasels, Raccoons, Bears, Dogs, and Cats.
I have drawn representatives of groups 4, 5 & 7 (Amphibians, Reptiles & Mammals) in this scene.
Animals in this scene:
01 Leafwing, Noble (Fountainea nobilis)
02 African elephant (Loxodonta africana)
03 Eurasian elk (Alces alces)
04 West African giraffe (aka Niger giraffe or Nigerian giraffe) (Giraffa camelopardalis peralta)
05 Dinosaur (Tyrannosaurus rex)
06 Spectacled flying fox (aka Spectacled fruit bat) (Pteropus conspicillatus)
07 Virginia Opossum (aka North American opossum, or tlacuache) (Didelphis virginiana)
08 Oustalet's or Malagasy giant chameleon (Furcifer oustaleti)
09 The Burgundy snail, (aka Roman snail, edible snail or escargot) (Helix pomatia)

Orion Cecropian butterfly, aka Stinky Leafwing
the Orion Cecropian, scientific name is Historis Odius, dark brown underside provides excellent camouflage in the trees, but a bright flash of orange may be seen when it opens. The orange bands protect the butterfly by warning would-be predators that it may be poisonous, as orange coloration is often an indicator of toxicity in butterflies.
