BNSF 6027 leads a southbound coal train through the S-curve out of Monument, CO.

I would have preferred the Exec MAC out front, but after more than two months away from the tracks, I was shooting whatever was moving, including GEVOs. Fortunately, EMDs ruled the rest of the day, so I was set!

A nice combo of older power leads H-MEMGAL east out of Lindenwood Yard as it heads for downtown STL.

Leads this nice manifest train with 170 cars through Thurmond, WV. I pulled this off of the video...

6312 and three F7A's leads it's 106 cars following and then crossing Prickly Pear Creek.

6312 is an SD40 with a long history. Sold by Burlington Northen to the startup Montana Rail Link and renumbered 203, MRL selected it for rebuild to an SD40XR becoming 253.

Still working and again belonging to BN as of 3/2025. Long life for an SD40.

43187 leads a part re-branded set through Margam back in August 2017, an everyday sight at the time now history of course. 1L22 13:22 Swansea to Paddington.

66735 Peterborough United leads 6X21 16.00 Goole Glassworks - West Ruislip LUL Depot at Werrington (north of Peterborough), a working moving London Underground 2024 Tube Stock (new trains for the Piccadilly Line) from the relatively new Siemens Mobility facility at Goole. 66766 Gail Richardson is on the rear.

The 2024TS set is formed of cars 48004, 47004, 46004, 45004, 42004, 41004, 40004, 39004 and 38004. This was the second 2024TS train to be delivered to the UK, having been assembled in Vienna; it was delivered to Siemens at Goole rather than London Underground (reportedly for some modification work), and arrived there on 3rd July, having travelled across Europe by rail. This was the first 2024TS to leave Goole.

The coupling translator vehicles, which also double as brake force runners, are timber wagons loaded with concrete blocks. They are owned by Touax, registered in the Netherlands, and have the European classification Rfnoos. I didn't manage to record the number of the one at the front, but the rear one is 83 84 3523 050-6 NL-TOUAX.

The 2024TS is the first tube stock to be gangwayed throughout (like the S Stock of fifteen years previously), and to accommodate this alternate cars are shorter and have no wheels, being suspended between their neighbours.

Despite weather forecasts suggesting otherwise, today had been overcast locally pretty much all day: although it was sunny when I left home at 7.30am to photograph 69007 on the sand empties to Middleton Towers, it was cloudy when I got to Ely, so I watched the train go past and then went home. A clearance during the evening was predicted, but that moved from 8pm to 9pm when I got here, with the train due shortly before 8pm. The cloud was moving slowly, but sideways; the sun, however, was dropping in the sky and getting closer to the edge. With the train only a few minutes away it really looked like the sun would come out after it passed, and the term "fringing" was mentioned by some of those in the gallery of photographers. Miraculously, the sun dropped out of the cloud just before the train appeared in the distance, but it was still high enough that the railway was not yet in the shadow of the trees off to our left.

Follow the path that leads the way

To the light that fills the day

Past the tree and fields of green

Until on water, there is seen

A brightness that fills up your day

When you follow the path that leads the way

UP 1066 leads LSV03 as works the yard in Poplar bluff on a rainy day in Southeastern MO. This unit has a few UP markings, but the fact that it still proudly displays its SP colors all these years later is very impressive. I believe this is one of the 15-20 remaining units in SP/SSW paint on the roster now. Who knows how long till it gets repainted, but its a neat remnant of SP history.

BC Rail 4609 leads CN M338 south through Kensington, pacing a rare daylight South Shore coal train about to hit home rails.

29127 leads an 8-car service from Maynooth to Dublin Pearse. Seen here approaching Matt Goff Bridge near Leixlip.

Former Conrail GP10 7554 leads a rather long freight through the rural hillside of Zionsville, PA, on the way back to the end of the line in East Greenville, PA. The train consists of cars for all three customers on the line; Blommer Chocolate, CJ Robinson, and Customs Processing which is receiving a string of hoppers for the first time this year. State Rd 2031, Zionsville, PA

SD60 demonstrator EMD-4 leads a train under the former Western Maryland Thomas Subdivision on the Baltimore & Ohio’s St. Lous main at a location known as 21st Bridge in Maryland. The location gets its name from the B&O bridge over the Potomac River just behind the photographer, which was at milepost 21 from Cumberland.

My last photograph of 2024 and a good Fake Train Friday post to get back to posting on Flickr. On December 1st, Brohltalbahn mallet SM 11 leads a Christmas special upgrade towards Oberzissen. The temperatures were appropriately seasonal as evidenced by the volcanic steam plume. The day was mostly cloudy this far south, but a lucky spot of sun gave some diffused light to the scene.

C905-29 leads southbound coal loads at SE Poplar along the newly re-built Clinchfield mainline.

BNSF 9028 leads a coal train south over the old Rio Grande bridge in Monument, CO.

The clouds in the background are dropping snow while the Joint Line remains in the sun. This little squall over the Palmer Divide would push to the east and leave the tracks alone, but it made for a nice backdrop!

UP 4014 leads the steam special westbound on the Limon Sub, at Cedar Point, CO (just west of Limon, CO). Nov 25, 2019.

Conrail 1949 leads a Westbound at the twin blades on the East side of Adrian, NY on February 11, 1989. This train, most likely OIEL, followed closely behind OIBU, and that image can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/85501582@N03/13835687445/in/album-7...

BNSF 9295 leads a northbound coal empty through the Greenland Open Space in Greenland, CO.

The white mountain is Pikes Peak, sporting some recently-fallen snow from a late-season surprise snow storm.

NS 8104 leads S750 east in New Lenox on the J. Winter seems to get longer and longer every year.

90024 leads 90019 and a nice fully loaded colourful rake past Crawford on 4M25.

IAIS 150 leads BISI through Geneseo, Illinois on an early snowy morning, kicking up the fresh fallen snow as it races through town.

DMIR 208 leads two other SD38-types and a SD-M with a train out of Missabe's Proctor Yard with an Evtac train with regular ore cars yarding in the receiving yard at left. The date of Oct. 31, 2002 puts this is before the CN takeover and all the freight cars, so catching two moving trains was not super common.

The four non-turbos must have sounded great notching up heading north with the Minntac stone, but don't really remember the sounds of this Halloween 13 years ago on the DM&IR. I do seem to recall being in position at Proctor for this afternoon limestone because a power outage cancelled school and the Halloween party at work.

The SD38AC #208 still looks good at this time, but must have been a tired locomotive as it was taken out of service the next year and wasn't on the property when CN took over in 2004. It still may survive at LTE in Ohio as it has been stored there for over a decade.

BNSF 9078 leads a northbound coal empty into Castle Rock, CO as a snow-covered Pikes Peak looks on.

I love late-May, early-June shots here where the sun has swung far enough north in the mornings to catch northbounds with a still-snowy Pikes Peak contrasting against the greens of Spring.

BNSF 3940 leads an early morning z train out of Cherokee and into Cherokee Canyon/Peach Springs. Shot taken on 30 June 2018.

Amtrak P42 62 leads a light power move from PLS West through Gary, IN.

Bologna, Italy

UPY 718 leads rock trian RIVUP 16 over the Root River in downtown Racine, Wisconsin. Gotta love fresh paint on a GP15-1 in 2015.

Conrail 6228 leads a mail train past the old tower for "Tower Tuesday", a tower that had a long time ago simply become "CP 141". Already severely downgraded in the PC era, Bellefontaine at one time hosted six different NYC lines heading out of town as well as a good size yard. The tower was the only remaining structure at the time of the photo, and actually somehow remains such today even under CSX, but it is surrounded by tree's these days. Even though Conrail was almost history at the time of the photo, good old #MAIL-44 was still running right on schedule. Actually even about 30 minutes early for it's scheduled 11 AM passing of CP 141.

In stunning morning light, BNSF ES44AC No. 6056 leads an eastbound double stack up Cajon Pass on the 2.2% grade of Main 1. The train has just passed the famed Hill 582, and in a few minutes will reach the summit. 19 February 2023.

This was the only eastbound on Main 1 or 2 all morning, and I am pleased I got this shot on the first day, as the heavy rain and snow over the coming week would cause a series of wash-outs on the access roads in the area, making them impassible for all but the most hardy of off-road vehicles.

This is the first shot from my recent trip to California, and I will get more processed and uploaded as time allows. More photos will be available at: cogloadjunctionphotography.weebly.com/california-february...

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad 2-8-0 1702 leads its excursion train through Jackson Line, NC, shortly after departing Bryson City on the morning of August 21, 2022.

This photo was taken one month shy of the 25th anniversary of my first train chase, of the same locomotive on the same route, and this was one of the same locations on that first chase, which happened thanks to my grandfather. The GSMR and I have both changed a lot since then, but I'm glad it's still possible for me to come back here and briefly relive those early days and think of the good times that went with them. Until I got my driver's license in 2001, train chasing was a family affair, and I'm thankful to have had those experiences with my parents and grandparents, who weren't railfans themselves but were very supportive of my hobby.

Freightliner 66610 leads the 6L72 0718 Toton Centre to Chesterton Junction Fhh through Waterbeach, on the 8th March 2021.

CLF2 leads S311 48s36 & CLF4 on 2MC5 empty grain from Appleton Dock to Coolamon at Keilor East - 23/05/2022

UP 8219 leads a westbound UP coal train west through Ruby Canyon and along the Colorado River. This stretch is lined with rock fencing to prevent debris from tumbling onto the tracks.

519 leads the westbound Borealis through Dakota. A first for me, as I had never shot an Amtrak dash 8 before. Unsurprisingly, people were already camped out at this spot well in advance for 2816's return trip.

BP 887 leads an extra southbound at Limestone.

BNSF 1842, an SD40-2 in H1 paint, leads a lite power move eastbound through Orion, IL after dropping a shuttled GALNTW off at the Hillsdale siding.

A Chessie SD50s leads a westbound empty hopper train across the then-new connecting bridge across the Powell River at Big Stone Gap, Va. The quarry in the background had closed by the late 40s. It was served by Southern's Appalachia Division on a spur known as "Harper."

BNSF 6094 leads a northbound coal empty at Castle Rock, CO, past the old elevator, on Colorado's Joint Line. June 13, 2022.

It's fast and purple; 43274 leads the 1D43 14.34 St Pancras to Nottingham HST through Kibworth Harcourt on April 22 2021. Originally the intention was to repaint a full set in the colour scheme, as a result of the chaos caused by Covid-19 however only this power car was repainted

37218 leads 37716 past the remaining North Eastern Railway steel lattice signal gantry at Harrogate. Returning to York, the train is Sundays 3S29, an out and back 08:27 from York to Hellifield via Harrogate and Leeds. November the 6th 2022.

Thanks to Gordon Edgar for pointing this one out.

56045 leads 6Y20 09:51 Cliffe Brett Marine - Chessington South Sidings past Culvert Place in Wandsworth.

56045 has recently been acquired by DC rail (as 56301) from the Class 56 Group and has now been re-painted out of its former 'Fastline' colours into a splendid representation of it's former BR Blue, complete with a reversion to its original number.

56103 in DC Rail's own livery has come along for the ride which will now involve the train travelling up to Willesden for a run round before returning to Clapham Junction, just a couple of hundred meters from this spot!

Simple wooden bridge now leads to a hidden destination. It is a foggy morning in the fall season. The leaves of the willow tree have yellowed and some have already fallen on the bridge.
