mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Marcel (left) turns 50 this week. Here, he and his wife are traversing (climb horizontal) on a beautiful multipitch-route in the Orpierre area in the south of France. This half-a-day climb and descent is one of my most favoured climbs in the area.

I used a small, light pocketcamera for this shot. When you do such a climb, you have to go as lightweigthed as possible.

04.15.09 | Les Dentelles De Montmirail, La Drome, France | For her first climb of the season at Les Dentelles and on loaner gear Brigitte Besomi takes on Mulot Intrépide 4c with style and a bit of hope. Brigitte and entourage had just arrived from Geneva the night before when thieves broke a window on their car and carried off their sport gear. Lucky for them they were staying here: www.gite-dentelles.com/index.php?lng=fr Mt. Guide Régis Leroy helps hold down the fort at the Gite and when he's not out putting up hard lines to remind the rest of us how mortal we are he's liable to pitch in and loan some gear to folks in need. Good session with Gareth down at Awesome Walls in Sheffield!

Did 8 routes each (lead climbing) sustained with cappuccinos and teas! :)

Eventhough it was Oct it was hot enough to do some topless climbing

10.03.10 | Picnic Wall, Smith Rock, Oregon, USA | Ahad Sabet picking his way up the knobs on Picnic Wall. I'm trying to remember the name of this 5.9 with the great big hollow flakes those knobs are pushed into. Soon as I dig the guide book out from under the huge pile of gear everyone left in the truck for the shuttle back to SF I'll get it added in. | Photo by Jeffrey Rueppel

Sydney's skyline in the background -- I reckon one of most scenic climbs in the city.

And up we went. Rod leading his first pitch and as Kipling says...filling the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run...using the word run pretty loosely here though! This is without question hard work...foot - foot - axe - axe, foot - foot - axe - axe and on it goes for about 90 vertical metres until you set up the anchor and bring the next person up.

Of course Rod thinks I'm holding the rope here but sometimes the camera takes priority ;) In reality he could slide down here for a while without incident...at least before he entered one of the crevasses below! Rod was thinking doing a self arrested slide down here on the return trip until I reminded him of that fact.

This section of the climb we could see from all the way back at Mueller Hut. We gazed out here two days ago from a distance and thought we may have seen climbers descending the saddle. But when we got here it was clearly evident that there had been no one here for some time. In fact when we signed out at the end of the trip we discovered we were only the second people to have been up this way for the Summer season.

Couple of hours hard work, bouldering, top-roping and lead climbing.. Very cool.. Can't wait to be able to climb outside again though.. Indoor climbing is great but a tad expensive! Roll on some sunshine and dry rock..:)

From the BMC web page..

"Britain's premier lead climbing competition takes place at Awesome Walls, Sheffield on 7-8 October, alongside the British Speed Climbing Championships and a round of the IFSC Paraclimbing Cup.

Britain's best climbers will battle it out on the super steep walls of Awesome Walls Sheffield, all vying for the title of British Lead Climbing Champion. The fastest climbers in the land will be on the speed wall, fighting for the chance to become Britain's Speed Climbing Champion.

This event will also host the IFSC Paraclimbing Cup, where paraclimbers from all over the world will be coming to compete along side the climbers competing in the BLCC & BSCC. This will be a great opportunity to see some of the best paraclimbers in the world in action and cheer on the GB Paraclimbing Team whilst they are competing on home turf!"
