Making good his escape down a side-street, Mayor Boris Johnson wobbled down the road gradually picking up speed like a galleon, turning to see if we were running after him. At the end of the road he almost collided with a passing pedestrian, and then he was gone... out of our lives as quickly as he had arrived!

Thanks to a leaked email and Twitter the scores of Conservative Party delegates who turned up at Hammersmith Town Hall today for a secret London Regional Conservative Party conference had to run the gauntlet of a small-but-loud picket of protesters who were angry at the severe local funding cuts already implemented by the right-wing Conservative Hammersmith & Fulham Council which has just announced a punitive budget for the next year, slashing front line services to the elderly, the disabled, immigrant support and child protection services.
Hammermith & Fulham's Conservative councillors have gone further than Communities Secretary Eric "Jabba The Hut" Pickles' 11.5% cuts by a further 3.5%. In their last round of budget cuts the council admitted even last year that they were already putting the lives of disabled residents at risk. Last year's cuts are nothing compared to this latest round.
The cuts are already blighting poorer people's lives in the borough, with much, much more to come, yet the council is happily earmarking £35,000,000 for the construction of a 14-storey luxury apartment development for private resale on land which previously hosted a large number of Community Groups and Services.
This conference was also intended to serve as a platform for "Star Turn of the day" London Mayor Boris Johnson to launch his re-election campaign. Johnson, however, sneaked in by a side door to avoid having to listen to people's legitimate complaints and, like a cowardly thief in the night when his speech inside had finished he sneaked out of a disused Service Entrance down the side of the building on his bicycle, refusing to pose for a single photograph. In his haste to escape our cameras he crashed into the kerb, slipped off his saddle (almost crushing his infamously fertile Tory testicles in the process) and almost fell over before wobbling off into the distance like a massive, corn-fed Norman Wisdom and almost crashing into a pedestrian.
The fifty police officers (including a Metropolitan Police catering van) who had to attend this meeting cost around £15,000 for the day according to a senior police officer we spoke to, and bearing this huge cost to the taxpayers it is even more odious that Boris Johnson should sneak in and out of the building specifically to avoid any contact whatsoever with the very Londoners he frequently claims to champion. In fact from the attendees of the conference not a single Conservative politician would engage the crowd - unless you count the unknown individual who got onto the external stairs leading to the conference room and turned round to flick the "V's" at the protesters below.
The police reported that they were very happy with the behaviour of the 100 or so protesters.

Pie & Mash is a traditional London working class food, originating in the East End during the 19th century. The savoury pie had long been a traditional way of preserving food, as well as in its smaller handsized form a transportable meal, protected safe from the surrounding dirt by its cold pastry crust. European eels were one of the few forms of fish that could survive in the heavily polluted River Thames and London's other rivers at this time, and so placed in pastry crust became a common workers meal. Supply was plentiful through to the late 1800s, particularly from the Dutch fishing boats landing catches at Billingsgate Fish Market. Adding cheap mashed potatoes made it a plate-based sit-down meal, and a sauce made of the water used to cook the eels, coloured and flavoured by parsley, made the whole dish something special.
There has been a Pie & Eel shop on this site at 47 Goldhawk Road since 1891 but maybe not for too long since there is a compulsory purchase order against the premises to demollish and turn the site into flats....

There has been a Pie & Mash shop at 48 Goldhawk Road Shepherds Bush since before 1891. Cooke's Pie and Mash has been resident and run by the same family since 1934. The Local Council in conjunction with Orion Land and Leisure want to compulsory purchase the commercial shop units to make way for in excess of 200 flats.
We, along with the Shepherds Bush Action Group are strenously fighting this move and we would value your support.

Sadly, the planning committee meeting which took place on February 8th, granted outline planning permission to Orion. The committee were advised to ignore the pending Judicial Review. Despite assurances given by Councillor Greenhalgh on BBC Radio that we will be 'taken care of' we still have nothing in writing from the Developers.
Boris Johnson was reticent to answer questions about the Shepherds Bush Market Development on March 7th. He did say there were only a few objections!! This is farcical. There is a huge amount of opposition to this development. Please write to Boris Johnson at mayor@london.gov.uk to express your displeasure.

Two minutes later a service entrance door opened just in front of us, and out shot Mayor Boris Johnson in a great hurry to escape us and our questions about why he had completely ignored the valid concerns of the protesters - some disabled and in wheelchairs - who had stood for hours in the cold wind and rain. Johnson completely ignored us and refused to stop for even one decent picture.
In his haste to flee the scene he hit the kerb opposite too hard and unseated himself, almost falling over.
Sorry for the terrible focus. My camera decided it wanted to focus on the rain in the forground instead of the large man on the bicycle. Don't buy an Olympus E-510. They're terrible in poor light!
