The #FAILBETTER launch party was a perspective-shifting exploration of the epic and inspirational failures that make up the exhibition, which features contributions from all walks of life, including famous explorers, inventors, scientists, and athletes. Guests were the first to see the exhibition, taste Michelin-starred chef Kevin Thornton's take on 'failed recipes', screen-print their own posters, and enjoy some of music's finest failures and one-hit wonders from DJ Anthony Remedy. Now it's time to use the F-word: share your take on failure with the tag #FAILBETTER. Visit sciencegallery.com/failbetter for more information. #FAILBETTER runs until 27th April 2014.

I've been fortunate enough to get some good in-fight shots of the local red-tail hawks, so my goal lately has been to get one launching into flight. Yesterday, as you see here, I got lucky. woo-hoo! Legs are still extended, still touching the branch.

About 20 min prior to this, I saw this RT in the top of the tall fir tree up the hill, then I saw it swoop away. I figured it was headed for the tall eucalyptus tree 1/8 mi down the street from me. Sure enough. From the end of my driveway I got some shots of it landing in that tree. Then I walked west down the hill for a closer shot. Sun was medium low to the west, so all was strongly backlit as I approached. I wanted to get to the sunny side, past the tree. Because of the rains earlier that day, there was a lot of glare off the asphalt, as well as the glare from the sun in the sky. When I was about 30 yards from the tree, she took off. I got a couple in-flight shots but nothing fabulous. I walked back up the hill a short ways, then chatted with a neighbor who was out waiting for the mail to be delivered. Soon the RT returned to the tree. I walked toward the tree again, this time on the other side of the street. The sun's glare from behind the tree was really bad. At some point when I couldn't see, the RT took off. The neighbor yelled something to me. RT circled a couple times then flew off, and I managed a few decent shots. Then went back to chat with the neighbor. By then, a dense cloud blew in front of the sun. Glare was gone, but light was greatly reduced, and the cool sunset glow was gone too. Temps cooled, too. Pretty soon the RT landed in the eucalyptus tree once again. I walked down the street, ignoring it until i was past the tree, then looking up with a very good view. (see below) I had the lens out to 400mm (just right focal length for the distance), and shutter on HS. When I saw her fluffing her feathers I knew she'd be taking off in a few seconds and I kept my eye in the viewfinder and lens trained on the hawk. It paid off.

The last couple of months of my life became public today as Campbell Newman, Brisbane's Lord Mayor, (on the right) officially launched Council's new mobile information service with a media call. We even got a spot on 7 News tonight.

It pulls information from our Corporate website in real time, strips out all the extraneous cr*p and makes it easily (and cheaply) consumed on a mobile phone - any mobile phone, not just iPhones.

You can get to it at brisbanecity.mobi. It'll (mostly) work on your desktop, laptop or netbook too.

More functionality and stuff's to come, but we think we went out with a fair amount of useful stuff.

Young people and children in the Highlands can learn how to stay safe going to and from school thanks to a new project “Stranger Smart” launched (20 May 2015) by Police Scotland and The Highland Council in Inverness.

The overarching aim of the new initiative which was revealed at the Council’s Education, Children and Adult Services Committee is to ensure that children, young people, parents, carers, teachers and Police are all working together to ensure that children know how to stay safe if approached by strangers.

The Council and Police Scotland have worked with schools, parents and the Safe Strong and Free organisation to produce Stranger Smart information and guidance.

The Stranger Smart project has produced a simple short leaflet that outlines how to keep children and young people safe and how they can be ‘Stranger Smart’. The leaflet gives advice to parents and carers and their children on what they should do if approached by a stranger on the way to and from school or while they are ‘out and about’. The leaflet will be sent home with pupils over the coming weeks, following class discussions, and parents and carers of all primary-aged school children are encouraged to talk through the leaflet with their child.

Guidance and a joint protocol between The Highland Council and Police Scotland has been produced for Head Teachers to advise them on what to do if they are informed by a pupil or parent/carer that they (or their child) has been approached by a stranger. Schools have also been provided with simple messages for pupils to help teachers explain in assemblies or classes to pupils how they can be Stranger Smart.

The leaflet for parents was designed in consultation with Crown Primary school Parent Council and ‘Safe Strong and Free’. Head Teacher, Elspeth Mackenzie also advised on the Stranger Smart project group.

The Stranger Smart leaflet for parent/carers, children and young people along with the “Joint protocol Guidance for Head Teachers on Suspicious persons / pupil approached by stranger” can be found on the council’s website at: www.highland.gov.uk/strangersmart
