Heading Towards Great Ocean Road, Melbourne, Australia

It is one of her new year resolution I guess for year 2014. She been complaining about her eyes were way too dry most of the time, probably too much contact lenses for daily routine.

On Wednesday, she finally passed her assessment test. The assessment including Eye Examination, LASIK Consultation, Specialist Consultation. If everything goes by the book and result is positive, then she will be eligible to proceed for Bladeless LASIK surgery.

The Surgery contain of 4 processes, Preparation for Surgery, Accessing the Stroma (middle cornea layer), Laser Remodelling, and Bandaging. Pre-surgery preparation takes about 30 minutes and is essential to ensure each patient is physically and mental prepared for the surgery. Once ready, will be be ushered into the operating theatre and positioned for surgery, the process will be conscious during the surgery.

When she done for her surgery, she told me that it wasn't that scary than she thought. The surgery was very success and well smooth taken. She even can see thing clearly right away. No pain throughout the surgery even after surgery too.

The only thing she cares was doing the eye-drop every 15 minutes within the critical an hour or two. That's to ensure the both eyes maintain the moisturise condition at all time during that given slot.

She got the complementary goodie bag, all the necessary gears are well kept. She is now with sunglasses during the day time, and with goggle during the night when she in bed. That's mandate as to protect the eyes from being rub without unconscious while she asleep.

I do hope she could fully recover in a month or two as of now though she can read from far distance, but any object in near distance, the sight could be quite blurry.

** This shot taken while she was in a daze of in the middle of something, quickly pressed the shuttle as you still can spot the blurry movement on her both hands. I kinda like this shot, because some how find it that was the prefect moment for some odd reason.

You must see this on large View On White and View On Black

I got a surgery yesterday

fixed my eyes

dumbed the glasses

now I see clearly

God why I didnt do it before!!!

Last Fall when I drove to Colorado, I really began to notice a change in my vision. I had LASIK done in the year 2000, so after 16 years I figured that it was about time some change might show up. I finally made an appointment to get some glasses this past weekend. I needed something to help until I can get back in with an eye surgeon to see if I am a candidate for repairs.

If I am not a good candidate and I have to go back to glasses, well… I am not going to fuss over it and I only need them for distance vision anyways!

"EVEN a late December field of untamed dust devils,

broken branches, and free spirited wild flowers are utter perfection,

in the icy consciousness of the poetic corners of the mind,

... Frozen in time, an feathered angel in SOUL-o flight,

Uprooted unwanted plants and vines,

pull every weed, and snip away each denied thorn memory,

of 2011,

meticulously from our ancestral strands of DNA,

apply a pesticide formulation,

No snow or shovels,

nuturing only desert roses, naked trees,

with fire breathing asian dragons and kundalini snakes,

piss a golden shower on a field of rosebushes,

Flying pigs and resolution bacon,

sand dune dreams, poking cacti, and tumbling weed nightmares,

of the dark matter inner cities of our OWN local BuTTerfly community gardens, hell would still morph into a HEAVENLY oasis of palm trees, soothing warm breezes, and camp grounds with fishing,

the view would still morph into a beautifully unique,

colourful, and the most divine mosaic HORIZON,

a reflective MIRROR in a Lasik EYE,

a SeVen Dimension CANON rosegarden."

I took this shot at McKee Botanical Gardens a few years ago. I was surprised to see that the waterlilies they had there seemed much larger and healthier than the ones I've spotted around where I live, further to the north in Florida. I would like to plan another trip down to this area to grab some more shots in the Spring.

For those who have asked about the progress of my eye, here's the latest: The tests show right now that the eye has healed, and I am seeing 20/40 +2, which means I can read the 20/40 vision line, plus 2 letters on the 20/30 line. It is better than the 20/50 the other lens gave me, but near vision still isn't great, and I will probably be wearing all sorts of glasses in the future. Thankfully, the left eye is testing at 20/20 -1, which means that I can read the entire 20/20 line with the exception of one letter.

Part of the difficulty is that when I had a lasik procedure about 20 years ago, they used a laser to reshape my corneas. While this is effective for a while, it seldom lasts, as people are led to believe, for a lifetime. Most get 6-7 years of clear vision before another procedure is needed. I got over 10, but by then, early onset cataracts had formed, most likely brought on by the lasik. This required the natural lenses to be removed, and synthetic lenses put in.

The two complications with lasik, aside from not being permanent, are that if you don't know the measurement of the eyes before having lasik, the surgeon may have difficulty getting the lens quite right, as was the case with me. Also, since lasik is a procedure that removes corneal tissue to reshape the eye, there can be "thin spots", and the vision can dim at times. For instance, I can be reading a line in a book, and suddenly some of the letters will look grey and the others black. This is due to the cornea being thinner in some spots than others. This also makes testing the eyes difficult, as letters can sometimes look sharp, and then not! It kind of comes in and out.

I am very grateful that the left eye did well. It was because of that that I was able to pass the exam to renew my driver's license! I probably see about 20/30 combined now. Being an extremely visual person, and a visual learner to boot, all of this has been difficult for me. Thankfully, I'm left eye dominant, and that's the good eye! When it wasn't seeing up to par, I was really having a problem!

So, yes, I'm coming along, but still have huge diagonal light flares and sometimes double vision from bright, white lights at night. Driving is tough, but a little better since I've noticed the vision clearing a little more in the last week. The doctor thinks it will get a little better still, and I will see the surgeon again in September. Thank you all for your prayers and concern!

From "Sedona blog"

Sedona's HUGE House By The Chapel~Who really owns it?

I've posted information about this before but I recently found more pictures of the house as it was being built so I thought I would post them.

Anyone who has gone to Sedona, Chapel of the Holy Cross has seen "the house". You can't take a picture of the view at the chapel without seeing "the house" in the way of the view.

The house is located at 503 Chapel Dr. and is a whopping 8,148 square feet. It also appears the land was first sold on 3/23/2001 for $286,000. I tried to get additional information by calling the City of Sedona Community Development Department and left a message that I was trying to locate the public records for that house and no one returned my call. If you want to try, call them at 928.282.1154 and ask for planning and zoning and permits. Let me know if you find out anything!

The first time we went to Sedona was Dec. 2003 and the house was already being built. I have no idea when they actually started to build it but they were putting the shell up when we were first there. With as slow as they are moving, they probably started when the land sale closed in 3/01. I am sure not only were the neighbors crying but probably so was the earth.

We asked many people who owned the home and at first we were told it was Johnny Depp. That I thought was odd since he is really the reclusive type. Why would he pick a spot right in front of a Chapel that millions visit each year. It's not exactly a good spot for privacy, you know?

Next we were told that it was Nick Cage. One lady at Robert Shields Studio (since has close up) said that he was in there picking out things to be delivered and insisted it was his home. He too is reclusive so it also didn' t make sense.

We later found out that he actually does love Sedona and often came to Sedona to vacation when he was married to Lisa Marie Presley. He wanted to have a home in Sedona and was even in escrow for a home in an exclusive area near the airport but we were told that at the last minute he dropped out of escrow. He wanted to own the airspace above his home and that can't be sold. But it was not this home.

Finally we were at an art gallery and spoke to an older gentleman for quite some time. He told us that the other stories were all fabricated and it was actually being built by the Dr. who invented the laser for Lasik eye surgery and he is from Romania.

Now as of just a few months ago, it was still being built (4 yrs later) but it has been for sale for over a year. Evidently he isn't even going to move in. He has it listed for a cool 29 million in case you are interested in having millions of visitors stare at your home all day.

Also it was reported that since they built " the house", the houses below it are now having water problems. So not only did he destroy a mesa, ruined the view from the chapel, and leaves this eye sore breathing down the necks of his neighbors, but he also is causing flooding problems.

This house proves that money talks. Why else would the city have approved this eye sore to be built? I'm not saying it isn't a beautiful house. I am saying it is not in a appropriate location.

Lasik, an acronym for Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomeleusis, is a form of refractive laser eye surgery procedure performed by ophtalmologists intended for correcting Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism. The procedure is usually a preferred alternative to photorefractive keratectomy, PRK, as it requires less time for full recovery and the patient experiences less pain overall.

Some of you may know that I was saving up for a digital medium format back. Saving up, as in "selling my gear" towards it. My aim was 4K USD, and the back I had in mind was the Hasselblad CFV (or CFV II) or perhaps, with a bit of luck and stretch, a Leaf Aptus 22.

For all intents and purposes, I'd pretty much achieved that goal around 3 weeks ago; I was short a few hundred smackers, but I knew I had something on the market that would more than cover for the rest. I'd started the search for a back a bit before, and had a couple of OK leads... an Aptus 22 way over 5K, and a CFV II approaching it.

And then... it suddenly came to me.

There were two lenses I'd wanted to upgrade for a long time... for over 10 years, as a matter of fact. I knew that they would cost right around the same price... somewhere in the 4 to 6K territory. And after careful thought, I decided to go with those two lenses instead of the digital MF back.

Those two lenses, of course, are my eyes.

I'd been nearsighted since mid-teens. It rapidly progressed during junior high, and my 20/10 vision as a twelve-year-old was down to 20/200 by the time I entered high school. The progression slowly came to a halt around the time I got out, but by then my vision was a whopping 20/600 with a dose of astigmatism thrown in. I was legally blind without corrective lenses.

I didn't mind wearing glasses, but I did try out contact lenses after graduating college and started working in Tokyo. I tried hard contacts, soft (O2) contacts, 1-week AcuVue, and finally 1-day AcuVue. None of them worked. I would get extremely irritated eyes, and would have to resort to constantly applying eyedrops but will usually give up at some point in the day and revert back to my glasses. I gave each type at least a month or two but to no avail.

Fine, no worries. Back to my trusted glasses.

Things began to change as I got into my current field of archaeology. Wearing glasses in the field is a royal PITA. Sweat constantly dripping on your glasses blurring the view; repeatedly wiping them down with whatever fiber you may have, but the clean realestate on your shirt dwindles faster than the Amazonian rainforest. All the micro-grit that gets rubbed against your glasses slowly but surely wears away the coatings on the lenses, and by the time you leave the field, they are completely trashed.

At least, that's how it'd work for me. Every time I came back from the field, I'd have to invest $300-400 on replacement lenses.

Then there are other annoying issues, too. I work near the Caribbean, so the weekends/extended vacations during the dig will often take me to the second largest living barrier reef in the world. But every time I go snorkeling and put the gear on, my vision goes off. Sure, being underwater helps a bit, and there are goggles with corrective lenses in them, but not all rental shops have them, and I don't snorkel enough to justify purchasing a personalized pair.

Plain ol' swimming in the ocean or river is a pain, too. Either you go all dorky and swim around with your glasses on, or leave them off and swim around in your legally blind state. It truly sucks, too, when there are great looking girls with great looking bikinis on, if you know what I mean.

And, of course, as some of you must know, having glasses on is absolutely craptastic when you're shooting. Especially when your vision is bad as I was––the viewfinder's standard diopter couldn't compensate for it––because you have to keep your glasses on to focus. Having that piece of glass between your eye and the viewfinder sucks donkey balls; it's much harder to focus accurately, and really hard to frame because you can never have the entire frame in your field of view. I thought about getting custom diopters, but when you have more than one (or ten) cameras, it's just not a feasible solution.

I'll be honest; I think it was this last bit that was the final straw. I couldn't stand my glasses any more, and I vowed to get my eyes fixed; I'd of course known about PRK since the late 80s or early 90s, and ever since LASIK became a widely practiced procedure, I'd been wanting to get it. About a year and a half ago, I declared that I was going to get LASIK asap, and that I won't upgrade my glasses any more. Since then, my main pair of glasses hit the shitter, and the spare I'd been wearing (with slightly old, and hence non-optimal prescription) was quickly following suit. The frame was all loose and would slip down my nose; the coating on the lenses were spotty, and really looked horrendous if the light hit them the wrong way. I could of course afford to get replacement lenses (even cheap ones to last me for a short while), but I thought it would take away my determination to get LASIK.

And then, here I was. Money saved up for the digital MF back that could, if I wished, be used to upgrade the two most important lenses I own.

There was no question about it. While digital MF backs will continue to come down in price, the "bang for buck" of LASIK is very likely to drop the more I put it off, because at some point presbyopia will set in, and I will need to get reading glasses. It was time to fulfill my dream.

So I went to one of the "best" LASIK clinics in Boston, and got the state-of-the-art Wavefront (Custom) LASIK two weeks ago. I'm now 20/20 in both eyes, and I've noticed only a very slight side effect in the form of nighttime halos around bright points of light––nothing that will hinder night driving. Obvious to say, I'm a very, very happy camper. Satiating LBA has never felt this good :-)

Oh, and one added bonus about not having to wear glasses? I can buy whatever frickin' pair of sunglasses I want and not have to rely on dorky flip-up sunglasses  The pair you see here was actually a prize I won from the LASIK clinic in their weekly drawing :-)

-----

If anybody in the Boston area is thinking about LASIK, let me know. I can refer you to the clinic (I'll be honest, I get a kickback) but more importantly, I will refer you to a service that I came across on the night before the surgery, and was able to knock off 2.5K off the original quote :-DDD

Tomorrow (Weds 17th Nov 2010) I have the Wavefront LASIK eye surgery.

I am extremely anxious about it, and part of me is crying WHY are you doing it!

The other part is saying go on it'll be fine. Who knows when I'll be able to post anything on here again. As I will have to rest the eyes for some time.

I've only heard one horror story, everyone else has been positive.

But... nothing is 100% certain.

Take a last look at this eye and wish me luck.

Incidentally I shot this video on my Canon 50D!! Using some video capture software.

24hrs after laser eye surgery this is my left eye. Recovery seems to be quite rapid, although I am struggling with the keyboard here tonight, and one eye seems to be focusing better than the other? But apparently this is normal at this stage?

I won't be posting much more here until things improve a bit. But my vision is definitely better overall except this close stuff at present.

If you live or travel through North Carolina, you may see me. Hahaha. Here's an image I styled and shot for Lasik/UNC Kittner Eye Center.

looks kinda like clockwork orange

This was taken 5 years ago, when I had lasik surgery. I was talking about it with some friends this weekend, and said i would post the photo and essay I wrote at the time about the experience. Here it is.

White Vision

I have worn contacts since I was 13. I have worn glasses since the 1st grade. I hated my glasses the first ten years. I hid them, lost them, forgot them, squinted, sat at the front of the class even, just to try to get away without wearing them. And yet somehow they never really disappeared. Silver octagons. My mother picked them out, and I didn’t complain. But they were cold, and I had a slight headache from the soft pressure across the bridge of my nose. Contacts freed me somewhat, but I still had to care for them, and my prescription would change causing me to have to buy new ones. Or I would forget the case and some disaster would happen.

Once during college, I stayed with my friend Emily at her parent’s apartment in New York, and having forgotten my case, I put them in a glass of water, and set two books on top. She got up in the middle of the night, found the water and drank it while I slept. The next morning, she went into a panic that somehow she was going to be permanently damaged by having two little plastic discs in her stomach. Two months later, I accidentally drank the next pair. There was a bad hurricane that was supposed to decimate New York. My bag with the lens case was left behind and all the stores were closed. The hurricane turned out to be a flop, so my friends, including Emily, went out to dinner and several clubs, and arrived back at the apartment at 5 am. Again, the contacts were put into a glass of water, and I forgot about them hours later, dehydrated and bleary.

Eventually, I settled down in my life so that I only had to buy a new pair every three or four years. But still, they were expensive, as was the care for them. Backpacking and bike-camping were always tricky with wind and dust, getting water to clean them, etc. Swimming, long plane flights, staying up all night, campfires and smoky rooms all required special care. But I was used to accommodating them so I did everything I wanted to anyway, messing around with various solutions so I could ride a bike for 10 hours, go out to dinner and drink wine, and then somehow get them to work at seven am the next morning, for the next ride.

When I heard that a friend was thinking of Lasik surgery, I secretly wanted to have perfect vision, too, but I said apprehensively that I didn’t know about that, it seemed risky and what if you ended up, statistically speaking, as the failure? But after watching several friends go through the process over a year, where they each had great experiences, I thought about it as a possibility for myself. I looked into it in February, but wasn’t ready; it was still overwhelming, too scary. And then again in June, and finally with the deadline of graduate school looming, I scheduled it for August. Then the few people I told about it said apprehensively, oh, I don’t know about that, it doesn’t seem like a good idea…. I knew exactly what they were thinking, and yet I had shifted, but how to explain this? How do you calmly say that you aren’t crazy for voluntarily requesting to have your corneas cut, and then alter your eyes with a laser? That you are scared, but doing it anyway?

To prepare, I had three weeks of no contacts. My glasses drove me to a constant mild headache, wearing them all the time, annoying me, no peripheral vision, resting across the bridge of my nose. I have been so dependent on my contact lenses, but in order to measure my eyes correctly, I had to let them return to their normal shape.

After appointments with the doctor for measurements and tests, I felt committed. I worried, even though he helped develop the procedure and had done thousands of them. I arranged for a friend, Ana, to take me. Three days before the surgery, I started antibiotic eye drops and antiseptic cleanings. I was apprehensive. I was not even aware of how nervous I had become until the night before when I really started to panic. What if I was part of the 1% that failed, in my category, and the lasers ruined my eyes. What if it didn’t work out, I couldn’t see and graduate school had to be ditched?

One thing to think about in this situation is what to wear. Something special in case my cornea falls out onto my shirt? A special non-stick shirt, or maybe a special sticky shirt? Thinking about this took the edge off and I started laughing out loud so much, I couldn’t stop for a minute or two. And of course, I wondered what state to leave the house for my return. While walking out, I looked around trying to memorize everything so that I could find it later. I would have eye patches on until I woke up the next day.

At the clinic, my stomach was heavy as they started eye drops, gave me a 10 mg Valium, and sent Ana off to buy a blank video tape. There were other patients there too, and my doctor arrived. After some more preparation, I was led into the surgery room. They popped in the tape, and I was feeling much better, partly because of the Valium, and partly because the staff seemed so competent. But I also felt like I had jumped face first down a long steep slide. No turning back now. The doctor asked if I felt good and I did, physically. I mentioned the question I had addressed that morning regarding what to wear. Everyone laughed nervously, like they hadn’t heard anyone laying directly under the laser contemplate what sort of cornea-sticking shirt to wear, just in case.

My doctor pulled back the lid of my left eye, and there was a temporary blackness while he applied some pressure, cutting and pulling back my cornea. Then he said that I should look steadily into a red dot laser, while they pointed it into my eye. I concentrated hard. I was afraid of moving at all, terrified of looking anywhere else. I kept saying roboticly to myself, look at the dot, look at the dot, just keep looking at the dot. After 30 seconds, and a slight burning smell similar to when a mole is burned off or teeth are drilled, the doctor brushed my cornea back into place with some viscous liquid. Then they did the right eye. As they started to work on it, the doctor said something about it being sticky. I didn’t know what he meant, I couldn’t see anything, and I wasn’t sure if this was bad. Again, the laser, concentrating on the red dot. A little burning smell.

Thirty minutes later, they checked my eyes with the eye chart, and it was fuzzy, not blurry like before. I could see some new rows on the eye chart. They bandaged me up and Ana took me home. I managed around the house pretty well, and friends brought dinner. I sat at the dining room table when they walked in, and started laughing at me, sitting casually with eye patches, facing them.

My house sounded different without sight. I couldn’t do too much, except tune the radio. After two rounds of the same NPR stories, and an unfortunate choice of DJ on KALX, I gave up. I listened twice to a tape of Jay McInerney talking about wine. Eating was interesting. Linguine with wild mushrooms; try twirling pasta on a fork, gracefully, spearing mushrooms and shallots, and reaching your mouth without dropping things everywhere. Or try salad with globe tomatoes and corn. Even dialing the phone requires looking at the address list, as there are only a couple of numbers I know by heart.

The next morning I woke up an hour early and ripped off the patches. I could see perfectly. The hills had distinct trees; San Francisco was crisp. I wanted to call everyone I could think of, but didn’t. I called Marc, the only person I knew would be up at 6:15am. And emailed everyone else. Then I remembered the video. I watched the first eye only. I was sort of relieved I didn’t watch the procedure before the surgery, despite all the research. Ana later told me the sticky comment happened when they had trouble cutting the second cornea, and if I watched the video I would see it. I decided to skip it.

I went to the orientation for school, and several times I wanted to say something, anything, about 20-20 vision and how absolutely exciting it was to read, 50 yards away, the Doe Library sign out the window, perfectly, no contacts. I was on the verge, almost spilling it, but I didn’t because I thought they would think I was crazy for doing something like this the day before school started.

My checkup later that day confirmed 20-20 vision. The best part was that things I previously experienced partially or not at all were now visible. It’s difficult to describe to people who’ve never worn glasses, or have good vision. It’s like being in love and trying to tell someone what’s happening, when they’ve never known it themselves. It’s an abstraction for others, but to me, it’s a marvel, full of excitement and surprises, newness, relief, lightness and ease. My contacts made my eyes bloodshot by noon. My new eyes are a fresh, soft white and don’t sting at the end of the day. I catch them in the mirror now and then and I’m taken aback over the whiteness.

Now I turn off the light at night, and instead of seeing blackness, I have the new experience, after 5 years in this apartment, of seeing the Campanile lit up. Before, I wasn’t even aware that I could lie in bed and look at it. Now, I see it glowing, from the darkness of my room as I fall asleep. In the morning, I wake up and look at the hills, the sun jetting through the trees. I’m elated, and yet, instantaneously, I have adapted to a life where I don’t have to use contact lens cleaners and wipe my glasses all the time. Lasik was so easy, painless, and so casual, being able to see perfectly. I go about my life and something I’ve always had to care for, and fiddle with, is no longer a thought. It’s like it’s always been this way, and yet, I catch myself for a second, several times a day, flashing on some contact lens care. And then I remember; I don’t have to do it anymore. It’s a small bit of freedom.

Wearing glasses because I'm getting LASIK

I still have two eyes, This left eye is not the only eye I lett. I just had a LASIK surgery.

Funny thing is: you can see the reflection of my camera from my cornea.

And I am sorry for my dirty eye, because now is very hard to clean this area.

For the safety, I would rather be dirty than hurt my wound.

I just had my Lasik eye surgery yesterday. The whole operation was painless. But after the anesthesia wore off, it feels that some foreign object is always in my eye. The doctor said it is expected but the feeling will be gone after a nap. So when I went home, I immediately went to sleep at around 9PM. Since this is not my usual sleeping time, I woke up at around 5PM. And boy was I surprised, everything looks clear!!!

So I immediately grabbed my gear and went to the rooftop to enjoy my new improved vision and shot this on the blue hour. So this is a rooftop view of my neighborhood on a blue hour.

I am so thankful to God for making my surgery safe and successful and for the gift of sight. And also I would like to thank the Staff in Shinagawa Lasik Center in Tokyo. They have a very good system, safe and efficient!

For 52 Weeks of Pix, Week 39: Signs

These were taken at my office. You don't realize how many signs are around you every day until you have a challenge with signs as the assignment! I've been on a collage kick lately...two weeks in a row~

Posted for nearly seven years with no description, and only a few basic keywords (fire, flame, flames, burn, burning, wood, serene, silhouette) this photo amassed a measly 103 views, with zero comments or faves.

The following list (added March 31, 2019) is an experiment to determine the effectiveness of keywords in directing traffic to photos.

A view from the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona, AZ. The mountain in the background is Cathedral Rock which is better known from the opposite side as the backdrop to Red Rock Crossing State Park, one the most photographed areas in Arizona. The huge house just right of center is supposedly (according to a tour bus driver) the home of the guy who developed LASIK eye surgery.

This is the equipment we use at the Khanna Institute of Lasik and Refractive Surgery.

What is PRK eye surgery?

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a laser eye surgery specifically a type of refractive surgery. A refractive problem is where your eyes don’t bend light properly, which keeps you from seeing your best. There is a chance that after your PRK you might not need your glasses or contact lenses, or at least only for certain activities like reading or driving at night.

Envision Lasik Centre is the best choice for all types of eye surgeries. At our eye hospital in West Marredpally, Hyderabad, we offer an array of eye care services to our patients like PRK, Lasik, and SMILE.

Why is PRK performed?

Photorefractive keratectomy is performed to treat refractive errors in your eyes. Using a laser to change the shape of your cornea, this procedure improves the way rays of light are focused on your retina.

You may need a PRK if you’ve been diagnosed with the following eye issues:

Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Farsightedness (Hyperopia)

The shape of your eye causes blurry vision (Astigmatism)

Who can have a PRK?

You have to meet certain requirements in order to have a PRK. In addition to having a conversation with your ophthalmologist (eye doctor) about what to expect, you need to:

Have healthy corneas.

Have healthy eyes in general.

Have realistic expectations about the PRK. Your surgeon will discuss what to expect and not expect.

Be 18 years old, or older.

Have an eye prescription that hasn’t changed in the previous year.

You’re not likely to qualify for a PRK if you:

Have advanced glaucoma.

Are pregnant.

Are breastfeeding.

Have cataracts.

Have an eye infection, dry eye syndrome or blepharitis.

Have scars in your eyes.

Have a refractive error that keeps changing.

Have cornea injuries or diseases.

Have a disease that affects healing, an allergy or uncontrolled diabetes.

Went to the eye doctor today for my regular checkup. All is well; she says I've stabilized (my vision generally gets worse each year) and that I'd be a good candidate for Lasik if I want to take that route. I'm not sure; I have a general aversion to anything slicing my eye open. But it sure would be sweet to see without any help.

She also told me that the medical term for what's in my eye is "nevus" — which just means birthmark, really. (She even took the time to have her receptionist print out the Wikipedia page for me. Now that's service!) But I'd been told by previous doctors that it was a busted blood vessel that just sort of left a stain in my eye. Or something like that. Hell, I was a kid. They were probably making stuff up. Turns out it's just a mole. And they're common, she says. So take a good look at your eyes some time. You probably have a small one in there somewhere.

Also, check out the extreme dilation in my eyes. Yeah, I can't focus on anything and I'm supposed to avoid light. Which means the only thing I can do is go back to bed. Which suits me just fine, since I got a whopping four hours of sleep last night.
