Taken in the car on the drive home from my Lasik eval. My eyes were dilated. Not too shabby.
Having the lasery surgery today. It's going to be weird to be able to see without lenses. I started wearing glasses when I was eight.

LASIK or Lasik (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive surgery for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists using a laser.[1] LASIK is similar to other surgical corrective procedures such as photorefractive keratectomy, PRK, (also called ASA, Advanced Surface Ablation) though it provides benefits such as faster patient recovery. Both LASIK and PRK represent advances over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of vision problems, and are thus viable alternatives to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many patients.

Some things about FoNgEtZ:
1.He loves short stays in the countryside, the simple life and a walk on dirt roads and less-visited spots.
2. He has few friends which made him think that he is an introvert. He hates the chaotic atmosphere of bars but loves the intimate ambience of meetings.
3. Laughs a lot, jokes a lot but only when he feels comfortable with the people he is with.
4. Grew up in Samar but has settled in Las Piñas where he lives by himself and a househelp (couple).
5. 11^th of a large family of 12 siblings, 30+ nephews and nieces, and number of grand-children (sa pamangkin).
6. Found his roots in Fujian, China in 2004 and have known that his father’s middle name was indeed LIM and not CUI.
7. Loved his parents so much but hounded by the memory that he did not show it when they were alive. His mother died while he was touring Vietnam and was enroute to Korea. So, he encourages you to draw a lesson from his experience.
8. Loved chanting “Marcos Pa Rin” in the streets of Manila when he was a member of NAFY (National Alliance of Filipino Youth) as he believes that Ferdinand Marcos was still the better President of our time. He was a darling of Ilocano elders and friends… lol
9. Used to have a 500-grade glasses and underwent LASIK (eye-laser) operation in Taiwan and had a 20/20 vision. His addiction to TV, movies and PCs made him wear glasses again, hmf!
10. Always brought his handy point-and-shoot cam never knowing that better pics are achieved by DSLR till he owned one in July 2007.
11. He learned cooking in Switzerland to fend himself and can do good Caldereta with Olives and .Leche Flan with Lemon Rinds for desert.
12. On weekends, he skips baths but never flickr.
13. He never experienced photowalks with anyone.
14. He bought a pro piano/organ with the thought that it would be easy to learn once it is there. But he was wrong and he sold it to his friend/tutor… haha.
15. He believes in super-naturals as he had few close-encounters with them.
Still trying to master the art of taking a picture of your own eye without seeing what you're doing.. but I'm getting close!

Opened in the winter of 2020, this serves as the first free standing eye institute for pediatric patients in the nation. It's sister building, the "Casey Eye Institute" sits right next door and is where I got my Lasik surgery done years ago. As someone who relies on their vision for their livelihood, it is one of, if not the best thing I have done in my life. Plus no more wet napped, dirty backpacking fingers going into my eyeballs on overnight hikes :)
There are a lot of cool design features, views, and art at the ECEC.....one of which are these Olympic like LED rings.

I'm getting lasik surgery next week and I had my preoperative visit today in which they dilated my eyes. If you look closely at the larger sizes you can see the reflection of my pond.
A simple composition, but one that I spent a great deal of time getting just right, and of course making those candles, inspired by Voltaire's great book Paint it Black. The light source was the modeling light from my AB800 with a reflector on the other side. Because I have a crappy tripod, I used the timer to eliminate shake. I expect to be doing a few more similar compositions over the next few days. I have all kinds of fun props that I want to play with--even a real gun! Oh yeah, I almost forgot...this is my first post-Lasik shoot. That's right, I'm finally free of glasses and contacts!

I had Lasik in February. Lasik dries your eyes out like you wouldn't believe, for months. I don't need them every hour, like I did in the beginning, but I still can't start my day without them. (FWIW, Lasik was totally worth it!)

Today I visited the eye clinic where I served as an EXCIMER LASER Field Engineer for ten years before I joined the University of Bahrain. I attended some 20,000 refractive surgeries performed on the cornea to correct myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia or a combination of astigmatism with the other two. Here an excimer LASER's high energy photons are utilized to reshape the cornea to replace the correction which is normally provided by a glass. In LASIK the surgeon cuts a 150 micrometer flap off the cornea and exposes the underlying part to a well-calculated and precision-shaped laser beam. The computer does all the computations for the correction and controls the LASER to deliver pulses for approximately a minute. The exact duration is determined by the degree of correction. At the end of the operation, the ophthalmologist flushes the treatment site with medication and restores the flap in place. The epithelium of the cornea regenerates within 24 hours and the flap is literally welded in place.

Bugun, Bahreyn Universitesine katilmadan once on yil EXCIMER LASER Saha Muhendisi olarak calistigim goz klinigini ziyaret ettim.

This is a collaboration between me and my Facebook friend Lasik Lasik from Seattle, Washington. He sort of challenged me when he asked me to work on his picture (the one on the left). It is a very good winter shot. And just take a look of what I did that is featured on the right. I love to paint the light. And that's what I did here. Plus HDRed it.

Real estate on St. George Street in St. Augustine is seldom turned over, as it is quite lucrative. The area is the prime shopping district in the historic part of the city, and change doesn't happen very often. This building caught my eye, because it is obviously on the verge of some kind of renovation or big change!
On my last trip, I discovered that The Monk's Vineyard was up for sale as the owner is retiring after decades, and the Mill Top, long known for fabulous folk music while taking a break from wandering the streets in the heat with a cold drink and a snack, was being completely rebuilt. That building was so far gone that nothing was holding the walls up! I read that it is being made exactly the way it was, which will be a comfort to those who don't want change in this city that stays the same.
I wonder what this will be?
I will be having eye surgery on Wednesday the 21st. I'd appreciate your prayers as there is a very slight chance because of prior lasik surgery that it won't be right. I'm hoping for the best and expecting it, though! I am having less and less time to comment as the day grows closer. Hopefully I will be able to see well again soon! If you don't see me on here, you'll know why. :-)
I mean, who the hell can pull off goggles?
I had to wear them once after lasik. I mainly got giggles out of friends and family. Not bad-ass respect.

Today, My wife got Lasik. It's been on her want-to-do list for a long time. Finalyl did the flex plan this year to make it happen. This shot is a macro of her eye about an hour before the surgery.
me: wait.
her: what?
me: nothing,... just that.
---
i miss my glasses.
A few years ago I got lasik done.
Apart from the odd feeling you get when you smell a part of yourself cooking under the laser,...It's brilliant, I wouldn't and couldn't go back.
But I do miss taking my glasses off,...
And just sitting in the blur.
It was soft and warm and comforting,...that familiar blanket you could crawl into to hide from the world.
It's too easy to get wrapped up in the world of the sensibly baked and oh so properly done.
It's hard overriding the natural inclination to see faults first and to run for the safe shelter that is proper.
Would I prefer to have nailed focus that time?
Yes, most certainly,...
And that would have been a mistake.
Or maybe this is all just me over reacting to having seen my face on a 4K screen.
I'm still having nightmares.

The pinecone, like the pineal gland, is extremely affected by Light, and takes action according to what it senses. Cones will open themselves up to the sun’s rays, and close up during cloudy or stormy days. It has to do with continuation of the seed-line. Sunny days offer more arid conditions and the tiny seedlings nestled in the scales of the pinecone can become airborne more easily. Damp or rainy days are crumby conditions for seed spreading, so the pinecone just closes up shop during these weather conditions. That action is symbolic in itself (like: Opening up spiritual awareness in order to sow seeds of limitless potential and continuation of Soul Growth) …. but to keep with our comparison, we can now draw corollaries between pineal gland and pinecone in terms of gauging Light, seeking Light, and becoming activated in the Light. We could say, pinecones are the external reflection of the “mystic seed” (the pineal gland). From this perspective, all these pinecones we see this time of year bring on a whole new meaning.

The pine cone symbolism is not lost on ancient cultures; in India, Hindu tradition teaches followers to awaken the Third Eye by activating their "seven chakras".It is an ancient exercise, still practiced today, called Kundalini Yoga; it is claimed to directly affect human consciousness, develop intuition, increase self-knowledge, and unleash one's creative potential.Interestingly, the esoteric symbol of kundalini yoga is the caduceus- a symbol that features two antithetical serpents. What is the symbolic meaning of these pine cones, and how do the antithetical animals factor into their overall meaning? What is the deeper secret these apparently inscrutable images hide? The answer to this is that pine cones, throughout history, have symbolized the "pineal gland", or "Third Eye", and by association the esoteric act of awakening it.This gland is said to lie at the geometric center of the brain, and considered by some as the biological Third Eye; the French philosopher Descartes famously referred to the pineal gland as the Seat of the Soul. The pineal gland is given the following definition in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary:"A small usu. conical appendage of the brain of all craniate vertebrates that in a few reptiles has the essential structure of an eye, that functions in some birds as part of a time-measuring system, and that is variously postulated to be a vestigial third eye, an endocrine organ, or the seat of the soul…"Common pine cone is also associated with eye symbolism. Kundalini is the spiritual energy or life force present in every human being, located at the base of the spine. To awaken the Third Eye, the kundalini energy must be summoned to the forehead, where it expands and thus awakens the Third Eye. The energy is said to travel along the ida (left) and pingala (right), up the central pole or sushumna.
This is the process esoterically depicted by the caduceus symbol of two antithetical snakes spiraling up a central staff.
"…the caduceus, the rod of power…In India it is a stick of bamboo with seven knots… which represents the spinal column with its seven centers or chakras…It also indicated the spinal cord…while the serpents were symbolical of the two channels called in Eastern terminology Ida and Pinagala; and the fire enclosed within it was the serpent-fire which in Sanskrit is called kundalini."C.W. Leadbeater, Freemasonry and its Ancient Mystic RitesThus, antithetical animal art associated with the pine cone, twin elephants in Indonesia, twin peacocks in Rome, twin serpents in Egypt...is really an allusion to the ida and pingala channels (the antithetical twin serpents on the caduceus). The central sushumna is, in turn, symbolized by the third, centered drawing (often a pine cone) which on the caduceus is the main rod running north south. Many ancient cultures incorporated images of the pine cone into their spiritual art and architecture, and they all also created antithetical animal art.Pagan gods of Babylon, Egypt, Mexico and Greece were associated with the pine cone, and the staffs of these gods were often adorned with the pine cone. The human pineal gland is shaped like and named after a pine cone, and it is an essential component in how we perceive light. Many believe this gland is the body’s Third Eye, responsible for spiritual enlightenment and sometimes referred to as the “seat of the soul.”The pine cone symbol, then, alludes to the Third Eye: it abounds in ancient art and architecture, a symbolic representation of our now-dormant window to the world. The Third Eye was commonly described by ancient mystics who experienced the divine light.".. in every man there is an Eye of the soul which… is far more precious than ten thousand bodily eyes, for by it alone is truth seen… The Eye of the soul… is alone naturally adapted to be resuscitated and excited by the mathematical disciplines."Plato, RepublicA superficial "tapping" of the Third Eye is not difficult. Close your eyes and, without moving them, "look" at an object you know is close to you. You are seeing with your Third Eye. To elevate spirituality and awaken dormant powers, the Eye must be turned inward.Western occult tradition agrees with ancient Eastern texts affirming that turning the Eye inward endows us with:higher consciousness;a deeper understanding of life and death ,a newfound ability to control the future, a sense of peacefulness and bliss extrasensory, clairvoyant, intuitive and psychic abilities expanded perception, enhanced capacity for self-healingstress reduction, calmness and clarity; newfound sensitivity. Mystery writer Stephen King's 'The Shining' touched on this concept. In King's novel, "shining" meant tapping one's higher psychic powers. Unfortunately, today ideas like the Third Eye and related mystical and/or esoteric concepts are frowned upon, pejoratively labeled "the occult."The question, however, is why the West has been so ill-informed of this Third Eye and its unlocking even as the Eastern traditions have incorporated them into their practices. The answer to that is the rise of Christianity in the west; the practice and idea of an "inner god" or "Third Eye" to awaken runs afoul of traditional Christian teachings. These wisdoms, forced underground, became the origins for secret societies that passed on these esoteric wisdomIn her fascinating 1924 book, Mystic Americanism, the obscure American author Grace Morey explained:"The All-Seeing Eye… also emblematic of the pineal gland or third eye of the human being… has been found amid the ruins of every civilization upon the globe, thereby attesting the fact of a universal religion over all the earth at some remote period. The term "all-seeing eye" in and of itself is indeed correct; but it's not the all-seeing-eye of the Hebrew 'God'; it is the all-seeing eye of you, the pineal gland that we all have. Many highly trained and educated Masons who lived during the 20th century, including several noted authors and scholars, were convinced that the all-seeing Eye was not the Eye of the Bible's God, and that the modern system of Freemasonry we've inherited, based on the Hebrew Bible, is in fact corrupted. It is interesting to note that the famous American Author Mark Twain, writing in 1899, referred to the All Seeing Eye not as the Eye of some distant heavenly deity or "old man upstairs," but as a tangible gift that any person can use:"The common eye sees only the outside of things, and judges by that, but the 'all seeing eye' pierces through, and reads the heart and the soul, finding there capacities which the outside didn't indicate or promise, and which the other kind couldn't detect."Interestingly, there is evidence that Hitler was aware of and understood pine cone symbolism. One of the front panels on his desk displays clear pine cone symbolism:Adolf Hitler believed in the Third Eye. This fact is affirmed by Hermann Rauschning, the former National Socialist Senate President of Danzig. In Hitler Speaks (London, 1939), Rauschning wrote:"To have 'magic insight' was apparently Hitler's idea of the goal of human progress… There was the eye of the Cyclops, or median eye, the organ of magic perception of the Infinite, now reduced to a rudimentary pineal gland.Speculations of this sort fascinated Hitler, and he would sometimes be entirely wrapped up in them."Hermann RauschningIt seems that, almost 100 years ago, Hitler knew things about the Third Eye that most Americans are only now starting to rediscover. The Third Eye can be seen above the French Declaration of Human Rights in a 1789 painting, and is on the back of the one dollar bill; it floats above an Egyptian pyramid. While knowledge of the Third Eye and the practice of awakening the Third Eye continued strong in the East, it began to die in the West at the start of Christianity.Consequently, Secret Societies like the Alchemists were established to protect Third Eye knowledge, initiate new members into its wisdom, and keep the practice alive. This explains why the image of a single Eye is common to Western Secret Societies, whose constituents possessed exceptionally philosophical, active, creative, and spiritual minds.A single Eye is one of the supreme and sacred emblems in Alchemy..The Third Eye seems strange, even downright alien to us in the West, even today, despite our living in the "information age" of globalization. The fact that the Third Eye is so unknown, so strange and so alien to our way of thinking is something of an enigma..The reason is because there seems to have always been, and there continues to be, a conscious effort to conceal it by a powerful elite who don't want the masses to discover its secrets.

While it doens’t look like an “eye” in the traditional sense, the common pine cone is also associated with eye symbolism. The human pineal gland is shaped like and named after a pine cone, and it is an essential component in how we perceive light. Many believe this gland is the body’s Third Eye, responsible for spiritual enlightenment and sometimes referred to as the “seat of the soul.” Many religious and cultural artifacts depict heroes holding staves topped by pine cones or wearing crowns made to resemble pine cones.
Why this fascination with eyes throughout history? Connection. Eyes are critical in the connections between human beings and for many of religious faith, with gods or goddesses. This is why historical eye depictions almost always show eyes uncovered, unencumbered by lenses or other accessories. It’s also part of the reason many people seek out eye correction alternatives such as laser vision correction. It’s now possible to break the dependence on glasses or contacts; cutting-edge excimer lasers and procedures such as Custom Wavefront Lasik can correct a host of visual issues and let you see the world an entirely new way, with no pain and a minimal amount of recovery. The symbolism of eyes tells the tale: As a species, we’re fascinated by these tiny windows to the soul. Expert laser correction can help give the best view possible, inside and out.
Secret #6: I used to wear glasses. I had them since I was 7 and was blind as a bat without them. About 2 and a half years ago I had Lasik. The best decision I have ever made!! At first I was a little scared but it was a quick and painless surgery and hardly any recovery time. Now I have 20/15 vision and hope to never wear glasses again!!

The manual focus on the camera leaves a lot to be desired. What Nikon really needs to do is provide values indicating the focus level instead of the almost completely useless progress bar style graphics they have on screen.
If values were used to indicate the focus level, I could record and return to any given focus level that I determine is good for particular conditions.
Also, it is very easy to accidentally trigger the autofocus feature in the manual focus screen which almost never works properly and leaves the camera wildly out of focus.
Perhaps if my vision was perfect I could get the manual focus tuned in with ease but Nikon should not have Lasik as a requirement for using their camera.
I feel the manual focus user interface was designed for show rather than function. I have no idea how Nikon tests their cameras but I have found the manual focus features to be difficult to use under the best conditions and almost useless for night shooting.
The P900 is most certainly the best camera in the P-Series. Nikon dropped the ball after the P-5XX's and finally picked it back up with the P-900. With a little extra effort the camera could be spectacular, but as it is I find it a little frustrating to use for some of the types of photography that I do.
The Jules' Photo Challenge for April...
April 16 - Yvette
Dr. Stephen Strange will let us all know when the Easter Ham will be ready tomorrow for the big Easter Lunch! Me, the family and the unicorn are all ready for some traditional meals! Happy Easter everyone! I must go bake some cakes now to make some trifles to take to the luncheon!
Good luck, Kim!
Although I do have a non digital temperature probe, this one has been my go to since I had lasik and I can't read small text, especially infront of an oven! You'll see here the digital temp. probe, Dr. Strange from Marvel, unicorn pot, fairy toadstool from the fairy garden, rocks, oak pollen (the worst allergies) and of course my love for succulents!
Having recently undergone lasik surgery, my wife requires nightly eye drops. Refracted in the eye drop is the lovable Rilakkuma, maintaining his bedside vigil for moral support.

I've gotten a couple inquiries about what camera and lenses I have in my bag, so I thought I might let a picture do the talking -plus, I can always use the time to practice strobing while I am at it :)
I got into photography back in high school. I had a teacher named Jack Alter, and he taught the photography classes at my high school. I enrolled in his first year photography class because I simply needed an elective to fill a slot in my schedule. Never did I think this class would plant seeds like the ones it did!
The classes Jack taught were film based, not digital (which was not nearly as prominent, or affordable as it is today). I used my mom's old school 35mm Pentax film SLR. I always carried a couple rolls of film on me. At least one B&W, and one color, both ISO400.
In this class I learned to roll my own film, develop my own film, and make prints in the darkroom. The basics, the fundamentals, the groundwork. Hell, I even learned how to make my own pinhole camera! Boy those were good times. Looking back, those two years I spent with Jack really changed my life, though I didn't realize it at the time of.
I started my digital life with a Canon XTi in early 2008. One year later I went ahead and got a 40D. I swore I was done upgrading after the 40D, but I should've known better than to think that (Yeah, you know what I'm talkin' about). About 8 months later, I picked up a 5DMkII.
I've been through a couple of lenses before I found what really suits me; I've bought and sold Canons 100mm 2.8 macro, 17-40L, 85mm 1.8,and 70-200L.
The lenses you see here are the primary two I use nowadays. Canon 35 1.4L, and 24-70 2.8L; both lenses are real workhorses. The 35L is quite magical in its own right though! And that 24-70L a.k.a "The Brick"- cancel your gym membership, because this hunk of glass is heavy. I also have a 50mm 1.8 which has found its use as a handy paperweight on my desk :) I don't use it too much, unless I want to go freelensing -which I think I will do soon as the weather plays nice!
Share the love! If you've got a picture of your favorite, or most used gear, come'on, let's see it! And if you don't have a picture, just tell us what ya got in your bag! :)
I apologize ahead of time for the crummy set up. You can kind of see the towel underneath everything -I couldn't find the large sheets of white paper I normally use for these kinds of things. And if you're from SF or the Bay Area, you know how cold it is outside. Too cold to go anywhere and do anything productive ... much less purchase large sheets of paper.
I am considering getting Lasik. I still have much research to do, but it is something I feel would change my life, for the better. Quite frankly, I don't even remember what it is like to wake up in the morning and not have to reach for a pair of glasses to make sense of the world around me. So sad. It's a costly procedure, or investment if you will, but if any of you have had it done, and can provide any feedback, or thoughts, please -let me know!
